Hooray - it seems like finally reinforced are re-releasing their early stuff on CD! Apparantly this comp is out on Monday - already listed on Amazon.co.uk for 8.99!!

'Reinforced bring forth a collection of some of the label's finest moments in time with the 'Legendary Sounds' CD album. Featuring tracks from the likes of Goldie (Rufige Kru), 4 Hero, Grooverider (Inta Warriors), Doc Scott (Nasty Habits), Nookie, Manix, Peshay & Nicky Blackmarket (Nicky OD), this album captures what proved to be defining moments in the development of the scene to where it is today.'

Anyone know the full tracklisting?

Lynskey (Lynskey), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

peshay?! wtf omg

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

haha alex you totally went to discogs

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

reinforced seriously just needs to reissue the definition of hardcore...it is one of the best records ever.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha yeah and I STILL couldn't quite find one track (I knew half these off the top of my head though.)

(x-post) AND Calling for Reinforcements!!!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"universal love" is one of the worst records i have ever heard

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe VERSION II is better hahaha.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

now with even more kenny g

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

taking sides: "universal love" vs. "sea of tears"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

sea of tears by a fucking mile

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"Universal Love" BARELY. Mostly cuz it's at least the first song. You can just skip it and pretend the record starts at track 2.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

god we're like a bunch of guys sitting around discussing the merits of cars b-sides in a strokes world

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

*wipes tear from eye*

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

*looks mildly embarrassed*

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

wonders if its worth looking for timeless. decides against.

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

oh god yes oh holy fuck YES YES YES YES YES [[calms down, barely]]

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you just find Timeless, Matos?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

heh
i'm a big fat liar. timeless is now playing. sea of tears is great...are you insane?

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

What Would We Do = Inta Warriors (aka Grooverider)

ryan kuo (ryan kuo), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I'm having flashbacks to spending $30 on the import version and going, "YES! at long last, jazz noodling and pomposity has visited upon my favorite genre! YES!"

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

"Sea of Tears" would have been better if Maya Angelou was sampled on it.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

ok i had somehow blanked the dolphin cries, acoustic guitar interlude and silly vocals.

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha what's LEFT?!!?!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

beautiful silence

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd still take it over universal love.

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

the horizon pushes ever forward...offering you a barf bag

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

From the notes to Jungle Tekno 6: "The Phuture of Jungle Tekno is to bring it to wider audience who can also appreciate it at a quieter level, paving the way for ambient Jungle." (all grammar mistakes theirs)

GLAK!!!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

haha when was that from?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

1995, I am thinking, although most of the tracks are from 94.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

whenever things are spelled with a "ph" instead of an "f" you know you're in trouble.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

it had notes? theres a sign right there.

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Well it's more like a advertising blurb on the the back cover than notes. "WATCH THIS SPACE FOR THE NEW ART-CORE STYLE", etc.

The tracklist is great despite the silliness. Ascend and Dread remix of "Hitman", Noise Factory, Aphrodite, Q Project, 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse, Badman, etc.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

nice. JT 5 was the third jungle disc i ever bought. its great.

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

haha that blurb is odd! i know the first thing i think of when i think of coffee table jungle is ascend and dead dred

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah there does seem to be a TOTAL disconnect between the contents of the disc and the ad copy! But there is a Motherland track (whoever the hell they are) with wanky geeetar noodling!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

you people are nuts. dolphin jungle is the shit.

the peshay track is from a compilation called "intelligent minds of jungle" on reinforced. it's one of the tougher peshay tracks. it basically sounds like everything on metalheadz from 95 (think unofficial ghost or whatever).

actually i think this is sort of disappointing. anybody who wants to put in some marginal effort should be able to find copies of the "definition of hardcore" and "callin for reinforcements" and have like 2/3 of this comp.

what reinforced should do is something similar to that "formation 100" 4xcd extravaganza. i mean, they were willing to bust out on 3xcd in a crazy strongbox for "enforcers III" (and i bought this shit! i sent money all the way to a specialist shop in france!!), and they can't do more than 1 cd for their retrospective???

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait wait wait Definition of Hardcore and Calling For Reinforcements are NOT easy to find (and certainly not cheap.) And I'm glad they are doing a comp that only focuses on their best years (even if I wish it was more comprehensive.) I don't want to buy a big collection or mix weighed down by the garbage they did post-95.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

let me repeat that, like, i think you people are really really nuts. i don't think the boredom really set in until "logical progression ii".

those tracks ("sea of tears" and "universal love") are like my favorites from those LPs anyway (not counting that dillinja "jah" track from timeless).

i mean, i don't think there's any point to comparing that jazziness to the other stuff extant at the time, because you could always drag in the counter-argument of 2step garage, and point out how maybe if they'd stuck a bit more on the jazzy end blah blah blah

i sort of have ulterior motives in arguing this point because my gf tried to get me to go see ltj bukem last month in SF!! (alex did you go?)

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

well, i didn't say easy. i've been to amoeba in LA probably four times in the last two years and twice i've seen those reinforced comps. ok you're right that for people not in LA/SF/NY/london etc. who don't have that sort of bounty of tons of specialist dance stores and used dance music floating about it might mean more, on the other hand i sort of doubt that the reinforced comp is going to make it to tower records in salt lake city given their shit distribution.

i guess you could get it from the devil amazon.co.uk but then i'd say you could just get the first two from slsk or what have you. (hey i posted a loooong time ago that anybody could email me for a copy of "calling for..." and only one ilxer took me up on it!)

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

"i sort of have ulterior motives in arguing this point because my gf tried to get me to go see ltj bukem last month in SF!! (alex did you go?)"

Hell no.

And I was bored silly with the jazz sound almost as soon as I heard it (minus 4Hero and some Roni Size, Bukem and Dillinja things.) And using and festishizing LIVE instruments was exactly the wrong way for jungle to go. It wasn't going to "save" anything. There is/was enough fuzak out there without Goldie needing to make more.

I've never seen either of those comps for sale in SF in the past half-dozen years.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

"the garbage they did post-95"

how long did you actually follow them? they dropped the dolphin steez and came back to mentalist breaks around 97 or so.

ryan kuo (ryan kuo), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I've only heard the Beginning of the End comp from the later Reinforced days actually (I did not spend money on the 3CD Enforcers tin TYVM.) Oaky, garbage is a bit mean, but I never heard anyone telling me to go out of my way to pick up late-period Reinforced stuff either.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah reinforced has a pretty strong track record all the way down the line. that breakage ep from last year is just awesome. i'm not saying i'm gonna mount a defense of the stuff they did post parallel universe as being the equal of what came before, but there's a reason it's my favorite label of all time.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

the Arcon 2 and Alpha Omega LPs in 1998 or so were really good. Sonar Circle's was okay too. but really, the label was consistent until release 136 or so.

strongo: Numbers EP or Break-Age EP?

ryan kuo (ryan kuo), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

paradox and nucleus are pretty good if anyody's interested in checking out the circa-enforcers iii output. ummm, ryan already mentioned arcon 2 and alpha omega. there's a goldie vs. j majik track from enforcers iii that's surprisingly good.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

shit i forget now. the one with "so vain" (i think that's the title?) on it.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"So Vain" was on Bassbin ... the Break-Age EP was all amen smashers so that's probably the one you're thinking of.

ryan kuo (ryan kuo), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

in defense of universal love... if "version II" is the metalheadz remix... then it's really good

bugged out, Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

y'know there's also a goldie remix of "universal love" that's seperate to the metalheadz remix. now i thought 'metalheadz' in the context of recording artist usually meant rob playford + goldie. so maybe the metalheadz mix is just rob p by himself? anybody have any info on this, i've been puzzling it over since i got "intelligent minds..." (which has the metalheadz version) and realized it's diff. from the goldie remix.

ok and i have to admit these comp names: "beginning of the end" and "intelligent minds..." etc etc are pretty funny even if i don't share the general antipathy toward lite-jungle

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm with you man... sea of tears is great and so was bukem when he first came around... had one of the best clubbing nights of my life at speed.... and this is a fairly lame comp

but the original universal love does suck! i dunno, i kind of only like half of parallel universe these days... there's more cheesy jazz on it than you think... timeless is better... black secret technology is best of all

bugged out, Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

what album was the Goldie remix from vahid? also, Tarzan says Metalheads = Goldie and they're usually pretty accurate.

ryan kuo (ryan kuo), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

goldie remix was from the 2cd comp "breakbeat science pt.1" (AAARGH)

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha these titles are. . . just. . . awful.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha okay from Jungle Tekno 4's notes: "These young computers will amaze you with their mysterious science."

WTF!?!?!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Woops. : "These young computer wizards will amaze you with their mysterious science."

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Fred Savage was Dead Dred, wasn't he?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

raves need more visuals like that!! more bright, fast and energetic!! less of this matrix-y shit!!

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

also i was going to say more bright fast and energetic d+b but then i realized that would be high contrast or something so i take it back.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

haha i just realized ol freddy is wearing the POWER GLOVE there

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

you can get "definition of hardcore" from soulseek, it isn't hard to find

chicho, Wednesday, 26 May 2004 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

a more apt vs might be universal love vs inner city life anyway as they both attempt song form in jungle. sea of tears - despite the middle ambient section with the dolphins and guitar arpeggio - still retains a kind of "Whoa, where's this going" opening up of possibilities - from the ominous synths of the opening through the driving dolphin d'n'b of the last bit. plus the breaks are still pretty intense and don't think the guitar actually noodles. its a simple riff after all with the drums still at the forefront.

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i've never had a problem with dolphins in d'n'b (unless it's bloomin' Brian Transeau), i larve me 'Sea Of Tears' - not sure I even know 'Universal Love' tho

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the version of Universal Love on Breakbeat Science, the reprise on Two Pages or whatever it's called is a bit meh.

Jeff W (zebedee), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 08:55 (twenty-two years ago)

people, if we are talking shit from Two Pages, Universal Love doesnt even touch 'Cosmic Tree' for shitness. go back and listen to that, and then you will realise the depths that the album sunk. But the second 'techno' half is pretty good!. esp. 'we who are not as others'

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got/heard some pretty good later stuff on Reinforced, a Mark Force track (Renegade/Minimum Wage) that sounds experimental and jazzy without being too abstract or cheesy...

Then again, I've always been a sucker for some beautiful cheese in my dnb. Now I like the stuff that sounds like Chicago House/Disco (Intercom, Defunked, Phuturistic Bluez). I think some of these new rollers have got the right idea when it comes to incorporating melody/jazziness into tracks, or maybe it's that the basslines are so good they distract me from anything played-out on top of them...

mayor motorcade (mayor motorcade), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

eight months pass...
Apparently, this out next week, finally.
