"Jesse" by Joshua Kadison C/D?

The only person to ever mention Joshua Kadison on ILM is me, and even then I spelt his name wrong.

So then, "Jesse". Mid 90s local radio staple, AOR piano ballad with strong Elton John overtones, a vaguely Santanish solo to end, Josh himself had long hair and no follow-up hits. Probably big in Germany.

"We can go to Mexico- you, the cat, and me".

Classic or dud?

It wasn't a hit in the UK but I heard it a lot at the time because I'd just got satellite TV and was gawping at MTV most of the time (at least when WWF or The Simpsons weren't on). It is a terrible terrible thing and I can't stand it.

ten years pass...

This video came on 90s Nation. My wife and I – both pretty well-versed in ‘90s music – were both like “???”. Even after seeing the name, we drew a blank… it’s quite a specimen, and fairly humorous to watch:

How funny: I heard this for the first time at the poolside bar 30 minutes ago. Thought it was an early Elton/Bernie. One Shazam later...

Oh my god, one glimpse at this thread title and this thankfully long forgotten song is now playing in a loop in my head. It's bullshit!

This was on BBC Radio 2 day in, day out (at least it felt like it) for the entire year I worked at a place where they played Radio 2 every morning (rip Popmaster). gonna say it was 1999/2000. Weirdly it was released in 1995 in the UK so I guess R2 just really liked it, nearly as much as "Have a nice day" by Stereophonics, "Sitting down here" by Lene Marlin and "Why does it always rain on me" by Travis.

There were three singles from Painted Desert Serenade that got a ton of airplay here - also 'Picture Postcards from LA'. I thought 'Jessie' was easily the best - it was kind of a pleasant Elton John knockoff.

Alfred's latest chart survey over at his blog reminded me of this drippy thing, the first I'd thought of or heard this song (I clicked the video link) in decades. Oddly, this sounds as much like 1993, as I remember it, than anything hip hop or alt.rock anyone might choose to represent the year: if you spent any time being driven places by your parents that year, you heard this song with about the same frequency that you would hear "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" a year later. Experienced at my current rate of one listen every 30 years, at least, I don't actually find it horribly unpleasant: there's a wistfulness to that I'll take over any of Michael Bolton's concurrent hits--or Elton in Disney mode, for that matter.

Clicking around Kadison's inexplicably detailed wiki, I see that a) he came out as bisexual some time ago (good for him!), and b) his other hit was "Beautiful in My Eyes," which I remember, even though I don't think I would have bothered to learn who sang it at the time. That song sucks.

anything hip hop

“You Will Always Be Beautiful in My Eyes” is distinguished by becoming a rather nasty song if you simply change the word emphasis in the titular part of the chorus
