Ok, I'm looking to get a Butthole Surfers record, what do I get.

Anyone think that Xinlisupreme is going to be carried anywhere?

I wanna get the new !!!; I think insound is giving the remix disk away with it... is this true (still)?

Is the Throbbing Gristle remix thing available on CD?

Which of the earlier Ghost albums do I get?

I'm buying Ege Bamyasi for sure, what other Can rules?

I want some thumping electronic music in the vein of Daft Punk or some shit like that. I also like Ladytron and Felix Da Housecat (tell me some shit to get by him). Make me dance.

Is Magma's Udu Wudu worth paying full prices for? What else should I keep an eye out for?

Ruins: I have Tzomborgha, Burning Stone (first press yeaaa), 1986-1992. Now what?

Rovo: Where do I start? I liked the Live at Tonic stuff I heard.

Tzadik: Tzadik stuff is stocked fairly well at a local shop, any good ideas?

Ikue Mori/DNA: I have No New York and SYR5 now what?

Vision Creation Newsun: What else sounds like this?

Neu! 4, Harmonia, La Dusseldorf?

You ask too many questions!!!!!!!!!!! Oy! And you have too much money!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll take the top one - start with Locust Abortion Technician.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Michael Jackson - Thriller

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

OK - everything by Harmonia, everything by La Dusseldorf (but nothing by the reformed "La Dusseldorf"). Not heard Neu 4.

Everything by Can except "Out of Reach" and (possibly, tho I quite like it) "Can"

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, I'm looking to get a Butthole Surfers record, what do I get.

hairway to steven, or maybe 'a brown reason to live'. any record in between these 2 will have at least some good things on it. i say hairway to steven though, fantastic record

I want some thumping electronic music in the vein of Daft Punk or some shit like that.

the last alan braxe single, rubicon, is great in that anime-miamivice-rave-japan-superhero style. what about the dairymilk warrior single from last year, "one more"?

I also like Ladytron and Felix Da Housecat (tell me some shit to get by him). Make me dance.

mri tied to the 80s, or phong sui for something softer, jeff mills live at the liquid rooms for something harder. speedy j - krikc is always good at parties. maybe some bangkok impact or legowelt? as for felix, i like his 99 lp as thee maddkatt courtship

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like Hairway to Steven all the way, but I don't like any of their records all the way through. I think I'd recommend starting with that one too. Really great psychedelia.

Also, download "Colored FBI Guy."

BTW, thanks too all who reply.

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The Ghost album Snuffbox Immanence has one of my favorite Rolling Stones covers of all time. Tune in Turn on Free Tibet has a great Pearls Before Swine cover (though not as good as Noxagt's) and a thirty minute psychedelic freak out (the title track). I've never heard Lama Rabi Rabi, unfortunately.

Sean Witzman (trip maker), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

FUCK THE REMIX....GET 20 Jazz Funk Greats
Is it *that* different from First Annual Report of...?
YES

What's the deal with the DNA CD? Is it a discography?
YES=Discog, very noisey...great stuff

Which Masada do I start with?
I have 1-7, it's been awhile since I played em, but they are all really good...the Masada Chamber thing is good too.

And yes, Snuffbox and Tune In are also AWESOME ghost albums...The New one is KILLER too.

ddb, Tuesday, 25 May 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks thanks!

Which Buffalo Daughter record should I get, I was a little turned off by a cursory listen to No New Rock. Also, I want more music that sounds like "Stereotype C" by Cibo Matto & Buffalo Daughter.

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Which Buffalo Daughter record should I get?

NONE!

ddb, Tuesday, 25 May 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I am looking to get a record collection right first time without even having to think for myself....

___ (___), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

No no no, start with a live Masada album, they're SO much better. "Live in Sevilla 2000" and "Live at Tonic" bring it.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm buying Ege Bamyasi for sure, what other Can rules?

Monster Movie, Soundtracks, Tago Mago, Future Days. Saw Delight is okay in spots. Holger Czukay's Canaxis is fucking awesomely beautiful and brutal at the same time.

Tzadik: Tzadik stuff is stocked fairly well at a local shop, any good ideas?

Maryanne Amacher, Sound Characters (Tzadik, TZ 7043) CD
Arnold Dreyblatt, Animal Magnetism (Tzadik, TZ 7004) CD
Luc Ferrari, Cellule 75 (Tzadik, TZ 7033) CD
also the Milford Graves solo percussion records.

the self-titled record and Viva! by La Dusseldorf are both very good.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

also thumping dance music: I haven't heard much stuff lately but a lot of the reason Kompakt stuff gets so hyped on ILM is because it is that good. I think in particular you'd like T. Raumschmiere and other Shitkatapult stuff as well.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

uh, so how do I look this stuff up in say.... Newbury Comics? Are we talking 12" singles or CDs?

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

both. I dunno if Newbury sorts things by label, but any good specialty techno store would probably have a Kompakt section. You're probably best off starting with a compilation, either the Total ones or the Pop Ambient ones (I like the former a little better).

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a soft spot for Masada's Live in Jerusalem 2disc thing but other people don't seem to like it as much.

Also beyond Kompakt the Bis Neun compilation on Areal is fucking great. A little more thumpy than Kompakt stuff.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

what is the logic here? Man likes Felix, Ladytron, Daft Punk. Lets all recommend some non-vocal house music?!?!?!?

___ (___), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

there are vocals on some Kompakt stuff. Plus he wrote "make me dance," which isn't necessarily the same as "make me dance plus listen to vocals."

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Arnold Dreyblatt: Animal Magnetism. This disc blows my mind!
Propellors in Love is pretty awesome, as well.

Sean Witzman (trip maker), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah those are good too. I think Animal Magnetism is the best Dreyblatt to start with, maybe 'cause that's the one I started with.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I am looking to get a record collection right first time without even having to think for myself....

This is what got us into Iraq. I learned that on ILM.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Vinyl is made of oil.

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

everything by Harmonia,

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I LOVE FLOWCHARTS (but not flowchart)

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

there are vocals on some Kompakt stuff. Plus he wrote "make me dance," which isn't necessarily the same as "make me dance plus listen to vocals."

I am well aware that a small percentage of Kompakt has vocals. I am also very aware that 95% of people who suggest the three artists like the above will not like Kompakt at first, because they really want that half way house of something like Campag Velocet or Regular Fries were trying to do about six-eight years ago. Just my 2p. I honestly don't think the constant argument from fans of kompakt on this guy is the right thing.

___ (___), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

That looks like my guitar setup. I think I am going to go google on how to build shitty homemade tape delays!

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Ignore my previous post, cuz it should've read:

"everything by Harmonia", except the unlikeable "Tracks and Traces"

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

dude triple underscore it's not a crime to recommend things! Jeez.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

RUINS: Hyderomastgroningem, Graviyaunosch, Stonehenge, Symphonica (in this order, imo)

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Magma's Udu Wudu worth paying full prices for? What else should I keep an eye out for?
Udu Wudu really isn't even one of the better Magma albums. To hear why some people rave about them, check Live/Hhai (76), Kohntarkosz (74), Christian Vander's Wurdah Itah (74) and Mekanik Desktruktiw Kommandoh (73). After that, check Attahk (77).

Ruins: I have Tzomborgha, Burning Stone (first press yeaaa), 1986-1992. Now what?
Check Graviyaunosch (partially produced by Steve Albini) and Stonehenge (aka just 'Ruins' on Shimmy Disc). After that, check Symphonica, which is a lot more proggy. But you know what, seeing that you're basically turning into me circa 1995, you really need to check Koenjihyakkei, which is a band led by the drummer from Ruins. It's better than Ruins, more Magma-esque, but insanely over the top and wonderful.

Rovo: Where do I start? I liked the Live at Tonic stuff I heard.
Live at Tonic is not my fave. My faves are Imago and Sai. My least fave overall is Pyramid, which was never issued domestically.

Tzadik: Tzadik stuff is stocked fairly well at a local shop, any good ideas?
You should probably check out the New Japan series on Tzadik. I'm surprised you haven't discovered Ground Zero or Otomo Yoshihide yet, or maybe you just haven't posted about it. Of course, Zorn's various rock-centric bands Naked City and Painkiller might interest you.

Ikue Mori/DNA: I have No New York and SYR5 now what?
Well, you could get the new DNA on DNA reissue.

Vision Creation Newsun: What else sounds like this?
Nothing really compares with this IMO. Closest would be some of the live Can I've heard (check their live box), *or* the last two tracks on Can's Soon Over Babaluma. Not as intense, but same impressionistic, tribal vibe.

Neu! 4, Harmonia, La Dusseldorf?
You probably want both the Harmonia albums and all the Neu records. La Dusseldorf is a little bit different, more melodic, so it sometimes seems more proggy. I like Neu way more than La Dusseldorf

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

(I like Otomo Yoshihide and Naked City)

Neu! 4, Harmonia, La Dusseldorf?
You probably want both the Harmonia albums and all the Neu records. La Dusseldorf is a little bit different, more melodic, so it sometimes seems more proggy. I like Neu way more than La Dusseldorf

If I told you that I liked Ralf and Florian better than all Neu! would this change it?

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

You'll like Harmonia then

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Ghost!
ANYTHING! They're all great. Snuffbox Immanence might be the place to go after Hypnotic Underworld, as well as Second Time Around.

Can!
All the above were excellent suggestions. You NEED Future Days, it's my favorite Can and, imo, the most solid of the Damo years.

Dance!
Basement Jaxx - Remedy! Throw in Rooty and Kish Kash while yr at it.

stephen morris (stephen morris), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Tzadik: I'm quite partial to the Raz Mesinai stuff

As far as the Buttholes go, get the first three albums, but don't buy them -- copy or download them cuz of how they screwed Touch&Go!

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Hard to say, Ralf & Florian doesn't sound very much like La Dusselfdorf. La Dusseldorf to me sounds kind of like Neu doing television themes. Nice melodies and it doesn't ever get edgy at all.

(x-post)

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil - I think you get the wrong end of my arsey phrasing (mostly responsible is a piece of software).

My point basically is that I would love it if folk who liked indie dance would actually like kompakt stuff. Just weeks and weeks of dj-ing a place where I do has proven that the reaction is to ask for some chemical brothers (or some metal, then clarify the request to be for "Guns n Roses" - true)

I mean no complaint mister stencil. forgive my muddled mind and phrase.

___ (___), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

As I said if you like "Ralf and Florian" I think you'd like the Harmonia albums, especially the first one...... and you'd probably best invest in Cluster's "Zuckerzeit" while you're at it, if you don't have it already!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

reccomend me some Die Kreuzen bitches.

Also, what Wire do I need beyond Pink Flag.

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Buy. all. Wire.

___ (___), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

no sweat dude! I do think Jon would like Kompakt stuff tho.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

All Wire till "Manscape", which is utterly shite, never much liked anything I've heard since either

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah Jon you definitely need Chairs Missing and 154 and possibly more stuff. Die Kreuzen never did it for me, for some reason, but maybe I just heard their lame stuff.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah Manscape sucks. I do like the Hafler Trio remix thing I got.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

dude Jon needs some zoviet-france and Hafler Trio, imo.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Funny website for Mah Jongg, the band: http://www.arc6ery.com

Sean Witzman (trip maker), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

dude JON those dorks in the zoot suits don't know how to really play horns. If you like CAN, you'd like this Ethiopiques record.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I think all those dudes in the Zoot suits didn't know how to skate proper.

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Ethiopiques shit is AMAZNG.

Sean Witzman (trip maker), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

seriously, this thing has minimalist grooves, great bass lines, crazy singing in a language I don't understand PLUS horns! How could it be bad?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just asking because of the shitty-looking back tattoo. (side question: why do people get tattoos on their backs!?!??)

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

They are exactly not like Sublime.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, this is the quote on their old website:

"The Soul Rebels are the missing link
between Louis Armstrong and Public Enemy." -- Village Voice

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

okay just wondering, don't know anything about them except like Sublime they have some sort of preference for shitty back tattoos.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

for once I'd love to see a funk/hip-hop/R&B/whatever thread where there's one token indie noise band mention and not the other way around

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

okay let's turn this into a funk/soul thread. Jon, you need to get Hot Buttered Soul by this man:

noise bands aren't indie

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, there is a similarity there (the tattoos). Seriously, this Soul Rebels album is fantastic. Just great horn players and a rhythm section that can do the New Orleans thing and the hip-hop thing, great tunes, and um some really pretty good rapping.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

got:

DNA on DNA
Xinlisupreme - Tomorrow Never Comes
Rubber O Cement - High Speed Electronic Car

Xinlisupreme is sounding much better today on my headphones than driving in a car stoned last night. The sticker on the packaging equated it to early Jesus and Mary Chain / My Bloody Valentine and Merzbow.

It sounds a lot like Merzbeat meets Sightings to me! Some of the guitar riffage over the noise is almost upbeat/playful.

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Thursday, 27 May 2004 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)
