Where is Geir to answer your plea?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Those 'teenagers' and their loud, tuneless music!

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd actually like an answer to my question:

What are you listening to that makes you think that every song written nowadays is angry?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

dan, you sound angry. perhaps you should write a song now!

i'm listening to mine, rroland. i wrote a song portrait for someone about her move from Japan to SF, leaving her bunny behind, etc. her only response was that it was emotional. i also did an EP of other portraits, i received the response that my voice sounded too emotional, it would be better of i sounded more robotic. i'm not playing a victim lyrically, i'm just trying to record a good, believeable vocal performance. i guess people want icy not warm. i'm confused.

So am I

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, Dan. I listen to Momus, ya know

Vacillating temp (Vacillating temp), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

No wonder you're angry

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought CW said that Momus songs were about orgasms, not anger.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

not that he expresses anger, but that he expresses nothing personal. anger sells records it seems, and in a recent workshop i was in anger was the main emotion people in the group said they felt they could'nt express enough of. i mean i know the world is fucked up, but there's more on the palate, no?

Vacillating temp (Vacillating temp), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

It has a bit of block at the moment.

___ (___), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Temp, I've never heard your music, but keep in mind that there's a fine line between emotional and cloying. "Giving it all you've got" as a singer can sometimes make people cringe. It's not that people want "icy not warm" as you say, but maybe "icy rather than soggy." Point being, there are interesting and non-interesting ways to express any emotion, anger included.

GIVE ME EMOTIONS TO WRITE SONGS ABOUT

i find pinefox's response unreasonably irritating

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Clarke. I think I need to own up that the concern I have is based on what will sell, what do people like? A painter gave me some advice tonight. "Rroland, approach your music as fine arts. You won't ever live off of it, nor will I, nor any of the other artists we know, just do what you need to do, do your work". It sounds simple, but what it really means is that there are no lyrics that are important to others that I could express, what are the lyrics that are important to me? I personally can't think of any at the moment.
