Does Steve Albini get lectured using videos, preferably Duran Duran, A Flock of Seagulls, Roxette, Poison and Will Smith?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:42 (twenty years ago) link

What does the Jimmy Page / Robert Plant stuff Albini recorded sound like?

I've never heard an audience that coughed so much in my life.

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 16:01 (twenty years ago) link

Somebody should've yelled, "GREBO!!!"

Stacey Pollen (Andy K), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 16:03 (twenty years ago) link

Somebody should've cracked some smoker's skulls and then screwed the door shut.

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 16:04 (twenty years ago) link

"before industrial became a synonym for disco"

He's talking up Whitehouse now. Talked about liking the Breeders and the Jesus Lizard before. No surprises here.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 16:14 (twenty years ago) link

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 16:14 (twenty years ago) link

Apparently he almost went broke after In Utero!

His annual salary from Electrical Audio is $24k.

that's probably by choice, tho. and he doesn't go out much.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 17:00 (twenty years ago) link

He was being goofy when he said that.

I'm confused, that picture doesn't look like the Albini I know I and love, who the fuck is that?

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 25 May 2004 17:05 (twenty years ago) link

the way he holds the microphone makes me uncomfortable.

frankE (frankE), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 17:08 (twenty years ago) link

I'm really glad that Steve isn't as hung up on Big Black as most of their "fans."

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 17:08 (twenty years ago) link

He's really gotta stop wearing that hat. It makes him look like a major league wally.

just watched chunks of this with the sound off whilst listening to some hip-hop. MC Albini rocks that microphone!!!

"I've never heard an audience that coughed so much in my life."

I was thinking the same thing.

I really enjoyed watching this, though. it was really informative/entertaining, etc.

Thanks for linking it.

I don't think its a good idea [when you're an engineer on a session] to get too wrapped up in the music...

hmmm don't agree with steve there, unless he doesn't include the 'sounds' as part of the 'music'. an engineer who doesn't express an opinion, no matter how good he is, is all but useless to me

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:41 (twenty years ago) link

i think all he meant was to reserve any kind of value judgment. the music is the band's responsibility and as engineer your responsibility is to record it. i'm unclear on the extent to which he advocates complete subjectivity however. sometimes i think he thinks of himself as documentary maker and others i'm not so sure.

in terms of 'sound', the extent to which he validates his paid time, if at all, is through his general aestheic and approach to sound recording, which is surely quite unique?

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:09 (twenty years ago) link

certainly. i guess i wouldn't want an engineer to tell me how to play my song but i would want one to point out if he felt a take sucked (i guess this is mostly what i'm getting at).

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:16 (twenty years ago) link

he made a good argument in favor of file sharing, comparing it to sheet music and the printing press, player pianos, radio, etc...(not that he's prob. the first to put it in that historical perspective but still)....

also, the points he brings up about the fact that most digital recordings will be completely lost to history is kinda scary...any degradation is usually fatal, and formats change so fast and most stuff won't be bothered to be updated to the new formats...

I just saw the whole thing. Thanks Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. That was really great/informative.
