Missy Elliott Cancels Indonesia Show
Tue May 25,12:43 PM ET

JAKARTA, Indonesia - Hip-hop star Missy Elliott canceled a planned concert in Jakarta after the U.S. Embassy warned Americans about potential terrorist attacks in Indonesia.

Elliott had been scheduled to perform Wednesday as part of an international tour.

"We apologize to all the fans of Missy Elliott because of this cancellation," Roberto of Lunar Entertainment, the show's promoter, said Tuesday.

Roberto, who uses a single name like many Indonesians, said ticket holders will get refunds.

The U.S. Embassy issued a statement Friday reminding U.S. citizens to remain aware of the "continued potential for terrorist attacks against Americans or American interests in Indonesia and worldwide."

"A convergence of local and international factors has increased the potential threat," the embassy said.

The embassy cited the continuing trials of Indonesian terror suspects, the country's presidential election campaign, anti-American sentiment stirred up by U.S. actions in Iraq and "information gathered worldwide indicating that terrorist groups contemplate additional attacks."

Your search - Missy Elliot bin Laden - did not match any documents.

Suggestions:
- Make sure all words are spelled correctly.
- Try different keywords.
- Try more general keywords.
- Try fewer keywords.

Maybe she will make up for it by releasing something with gamelan in the mix (if she hasn't done so already).

I would buy that record.

I'm just amazed that Jakarta can draw a Missy concert.

I'm not -- you have to realize just how omnipresent Western pop really is. If there can be a huge fanbase for someone like Suede (and there is, a number of people on my Suede fanlist are from there), then I rather presume Missy drawing a huge crowd is a no-brainer.

(That reminds me, I came across another Iraqi blogger quoting Morrissey recently.)

no I realize that Western Pop is big everywhere (I almost saw Santana in Hong Kong - and watching Thai MTV in 1994 was an experience, the number of Pearl Jam t-shirts on singers was amazing), but I don't sense that Missy is really that big in America in comparison with most of her hip-hop peers (she outweighs [sorry] them in critical praise, though), so I can't see her being that big in a country like Indonesia. I wonder how big hip-hop in general is there, I'd guess less so than other Asian countries.

Also, Jakarta is just FUCKED UP. I would be surprised if there AREN'T more bombings there.

I'm planning a trip to Indonesia including Jakarta. My friend who I'll be going with says the music/dance club scene is massive.

yeah, promoters like to book concerts that only draw two people, moron.

Here's hoping, then, that the nation of Indonesians who were thus declined an opportunity to get their respective freaks on will summarily rise up as one and oust the terrorist element from their country.

Sorry, but the headline says "Missy Elliott Cancels Indonesia Show" -- if Jakartans want to draw an American hip hop event, they better get out their pencils.

This thread bothered me for a few days, aside from being called a moron (and not for a good reason this time), so I searched and found the terrorists winning in Fargo Rock City, too.

The above story just felt like a lie -- if you sell enough tickets, you can hire an army of security instead of cancelling shows.

Man Fired Over Missy Elliot Concert Debacle

The manager of the Fargodome in Fargo, North Dakota was fired from his position after he advanced $90,000 to a promoter for a Missy Elliot concert that never happened.

Fargo officials said that Paul Johnson, who managed the Fargodome for over nine years, felt pressure to book big name acts at the dome and used $90,000 of taxpayers money to secure Elliot.

The show was canceled due to poor ticket sales and Fargodome Authority members said the deal violated their rules, because their was no written contract to obtain a refund if the concert was canceled.

Fargodome's parent company, Philadelphia based Global Spectrum, said that they would repay the city $75,000 and $15,000 in advertisements for the concert.

The promoter of the event, Henry Mitchell, has not been found.

do you doubt the veracity of ROBERTO?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't see her being that big in a country like Indonesia.

Remember the sheer number of people, though -- the number of Indonesians in the age group of 20-29 is about 10% higher than that of the US...

I guess we should call her Sissy Elliot from now on, huh? Oh, that was goooood...
