cool interview with weasel walter here
http://www.blastitude.com/17/ORTHRELM.htm

my name is limitless, Wednesday, 26 May 2004 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

heh I know someone who quit Blastitude just because of that.

Anyway, the newish ORTHRELM stuff kicks ass.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

why?

my name is limitless, Wednesday, 26 May 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't like the intensely repetitive stuff they were doing the last time I saw them live, but their most recent CD (the one on Three One G) was the best thing they've released. Amazing.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

The split with Touchdown is meh. The white album (TMU?>) is crap until the last 4 "songs" or so. Better live than they used to be.

orthrelm totally ownzzz. they were spectacular last time i saw them, and mick is such a sweet pea.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

If the guitarist were to focus some of his riffing, and consider employing some sick chorus pedals, he could MAYBE be good enough to tune one of Vai's back-up guitars. But until then, he stinks.

Neb Reyob (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just saying he needs to reign it in a little bit if he ever wants to truly go surfing with the alien. There are definitely some atomic lixx in there, he just needs to separate the stems and seeds from the KGBs.

ORTHRELM: HAIL & KILL!

The instrumental duo's output is densely packed with musical information: with little or no structural repetition, discreet cells of notes are often frantically reconfigured into every possible permutation with staggering speed, revealing a fractal-like inner logic that is both chaotically asymmetrical and which makes one itch from head to foot. It is a thing too bad for a bad report.

This stuff isn't sonically polite, effete "new music" for chin-scratchers -- no, no, it is a villainous saffron that would
remake all the unbaked and doughy youth of America in its color.
It is a modern chamber music straight from the streets, complete with brass knuckles, pungent outbursts taking form as interjections,
exclamations and sonic expletives. Even as muttered on record to
no one in particular, they sound like insults. The incredible rate of information and detail contained within Orthrelm's music insures that it will last long into the future, like the speech of madmen. As
dry as the remainder biscuit of a long voyage, Orthrelm are rough, tough and hairy.

By Dirty Pant'loon - See all my reviews

A chaotic, über-weird mess with only drums and ugly distorted guitar. "Songs" approximately 5-10 seconds long. Of course it's 5 stars. Duh.

Person nr.1: "hi,nice waether =)"
Person nr.2: "Hahahaha. Hahahahhhah." *pops in Asristir Vieldriox*

Man, I fucking love Mick Barr. I stumbled across Shred Earthship with him and Zack Hill today for super cheap used, am I going to love this too?

you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 14 January 2010 02:33 (sixteen years ago)

You either get Mick and like pretty much all of it, or you'll never be a fan of any of it.

Nate Carson, Thursday, 14 January 2010 11:23 (sixteen years ago)

That's what I've been noticing on comment threads about him. Listening to Shred Earthship now and loving it, I guess I "get" him.

Is there a ideal entry point for this guy?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 10 March 2026 00:30 (three months ago)

Depends what you want:

Orthrelm - insanely compressed shreddy noise-metal guitar-drums duos, except for OV, which is a single riff played for 45 minutes straight
Octis - solo material, also hyper-compressed shreddy noise-metal but using a drum machine instead of another human
Ocrilim - solo material, droney/hypnotic/blissful, RIYL early Liturgy
Krallice - started out shreddy/blissful black metal, got more compositionally ambitious over time but still ultimately just black metal; many people love this band, I am not one of them

For me it's Orthrelm all day.

wipes chooser (unperson), Tuesday, 10 March 2026 00:49 (three months ago)

prob a weird thing to recommend as an entry point but OV is _the one_ for me

(⊙_⊙?) (original bgm), Tuesday, 10 March 2026 01:54 (three months ago)

Yeah gotta go with OV, though its def not a single riff
