_Tusk_ is the greatest album ever (er, of its ilk). _Then Play On_ is a close second. Discuss.

Douglas, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Tusk is mad as hell and I rather like it

Dr. C, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I was scared and fascinated by the dirty wife-swapping aura surrounding Fleetwood Mac when I was a kid. It made me think my parents were closet swinger perverts when I saw the cover of "Rumours", and even more so the insert photos, in their collection. Just when I had gotten over realizing they were closet drug addicts after finding that Doobie Brothers record with the giant roach photo on the inner sleeve.

fritz, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

All I can really contribute to this thread is my love of Christine McVie's silly love songs. And my love of _The Dance_ VH1 special (based mostly on the umpteen close-ups of Ms. Courtney Love - yeah, we know she's a fan, SHOW THE BAND). Those awkward glances & bon mots shared during "Landslide" bring tears of laughter and sorrow to these jaded eyes.

David Raposa, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

this is assuming that Tusk has an ilk. (or does it? John Wesley Harding, Kid A, I suppose....)

despite decades of AOR overkill, I still love the s/t '75 album and Rumours a whole bunch. sorry.

M. Matos, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I've always loved Tusk - no problem geting a pristine copy in Record and Tape exchange for not more then two quid. Sara, Beautiful Child and Save Me A Place conjure up wistful images and memories of childhood 70s summers. Same with Rhiannon, Landslide and I'm So Afraid from the 1975 LP. Great essay on Tusk from Reynolds in the "Great Lost Albums" book that Melody Maker gave away in '95. I loved Mirage when I was 15 but would probably hate it now.

David Gunnip, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I second what everybody's said so far. Amazing.

Jeff, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Not really a big fan of the band, but yes, "Tusk" is a mad masterpiece.

Sean, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

daniel, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

actually, now that you mention Mirage, I think "Hold Me" might be their best single

M. Matos, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Very good, but what about (the differently insane) _Then Play On_? Anyone else here even heard it? Y'oughta.

Douglas, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Heard it and like it. That's the one with "Oh Well" on it, right? I even have a copy at home, though I haven't played it in years.

What about the Bob Welch era? I confess to liking Future Games.

nickn, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Of the Bob Welch era - I like Bare Trees best.

I've been looking for some live material from that era for a long time - I had a tape once - destroyed about 20 years ago & haven't found a suitable replacement yet.

Dave225, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Have the fuckers at (whatever record co.) put out a CD of 'Tusk' where "Sarah" ISN'T edited to shit yet? Until they do, I'm sticking with the vinyl. Although was it necessary to have TWO innersleeves for each disc?

I was named after Lindsey Buckingham and I don't like Fleetwood Mac at all. Stevie Nicks is the devil, seriously.

Lindsey B, Monday, 12 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

one year passes...
Okay guys help me. Over the six months or so I've realised that the handful of Stevie Nicks-sung FM songs I know ("Gypsy", "Dreams", "Sara", "Landslide", "Rhiannon") are, like, my favourite things EVAH. But obv. these only make up a fraction of the albums. Should I just buy the Greatest Hits, or should I get the proper albums? And if so, which one first?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 21 November 2002 15:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

Bought Then Play On solely because "Oh Well" has one of the greatest guitar riffs ever. I'm not sure why they made it a nine minute song, when the first 2.5 minutes are so frickin' intense and perfect. The other stuff didn't stick with me until a couple more listens, but yeah, fantastic album. It's not my usual fare, so I'm actually kind of surprised I dig it so much.

Since I love Tusk and I love Camper Van Beethoven, I thought "Well, CVB covering the entirety of Tusk should be great, then!". Unfortunately, this isn't the case. I'll give it a few more spins, but it was pretty disappointing. And don't be suckered in by the lure of multi-media content - it's kind of lame. There's not even any interface - just files. And there's even a file on there, left apparently by mistake, which (if you open it in a text editor) will show you the web browser history for the computer on which it was made (incl. some p0rn sites, *laugh*). C'mon people, that's just sloppy.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Thursday, 21 November 2002 16:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

My short answer Tim would be if it's really the Nicks stuff you're after, go for the hits, as most of her good stuff made it's way on to the radio anyway (tho' I am unfamiliar with Tusk).

If it's FM in general that interests you, I'd go for the albums, as there's a whole pile of great non-radio tracks. Rumours (which at least they spelled correctly!) is the obvious starting point (that won't disappoint). Followed--controversial opinion alert!--by Tango in the Night (new agey, almost afro-poppish, with lots of synths--contains Nicks's awesome "Seven Wonders"), Fleetwood Mac (s/t), Mirage, and that's as far as I get. I'm willing to believe that Tusk is as good as some people say it is because the title track is magnificent--last time I heard it it reminded me of 112's "Dance With Me."

And if you can find online the live version of "Everywhere" (one of the singles from Tango--don't know where the live one's from), you'll hear the aforementioned afro-pop connection made explicit; minus the vocals, it almost sounds like King Sunny Ade. (It's Christine, not Stevie, though.)

Man Of The World was probably the best song I discovered last year. Devastatingly good and made me realise why Peter Green was held in such high regard.

Must go and buy Tusk.

mms (mms), Thursday, 23 January 2003 11:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'll take the Peter Green days everytime. Then Play On demonstrates him helming the band between the fiery blues and the soft pop that made them radio staples. Much more evocative, his guitar licks expressed more emotion than any of their half dozen vocalists ever could. I too have a certain detest for Buckingham, but i must say his acoustic work on The Dance was rather phenomenal. ¥

Listened to Tusk yesterday while reading this month's Uncut Mac feature.. the bit in Beautiful Child where Buckingham joins Nicks on the vocal is truly amazing. I also love some of the Buckingham fuzz punk 2 minute jobs. I've always liked the idea of him working away like a bastard to get Tusk made while the others intermittently turned up coked off their heads adding bits and pieces.

Probably. Bare Trees, in particular, is very strong. Danny Kirwan's "Dust" from that is one of the best FM tracks of any period.

dlp9001, Saturday, 19 March 2005 23:59 (nineteen years ago) link

"Say You Will" might have been a near-classic (a) had Christine consented to contribute songs (b) it would've been shorter. In that VH-1 documentary on the making of the album, he was apparently quite pissed it wasn't a double album...

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 20 March 2005 00:01 (nineteen years ago) link

"Kiln House" is okay, but nothing to really write home about.

J (Jay), Sunday, 20 March 2005 00:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Kiln House is pretty good, actually! I mean, it completely pales in comparison to its mighty predecessor Then Play On, but that's pretty tough competition for any record to overcome. Kiln House still has Spencer and Kirwan, so it still feels a lot like the original group. "Station Man" is pretty great.

I have Bare Trees but haven't listened in a while. I remember liking it though; very mellow record. My local classic rock radio station actually played a track off it last weekend! I was randomly scanning the dial and checked them out for a bit -- they were in the midst of a "deep cuts" weekend.

Haven't heard the rest, but Mystery to Me has the totally awesome single "Hypnotized" -- definitely seek out that song if you haven't heard it, just beautiful. written by Bob Welch. And also further proof that Mick Fleetwood was a great drummer!!

Pre-Buckingham-Nicks Fleetwood Mac: S/D

Mitya (mitya), Friday, 17 March 2006 04:59 (eighteen years ago) link

two years pass...

It's a shame that the revival never took off, as I might have gotten Future Games earlier.

It's really crazy...every time I think I've heard everything worth hearing by Fleetwood Mac, it turns out that I overlooked something. Anyway, Future Games: their prog rock, Pink Floyd-y album. Long songs, heavy Kirwan influence. I kind of wish they'd had another album or two in this vein (bits of Bare Trees fit that description, but only bits). Still trying to decide whether I prefer the title track, Woman of 1000 Years or Sands of Time.

I'm kind of sad that it looks (at least now) like the Fleetwood Mac reissue program is over. I'd kill to have Then Play On, Kiln House, Bare Trees, Future Games, and Mystery To Me remastered w/bonus tracks. (Also the sound of my Future Games CD is a little muddy...wonder if that's how the vinyl was or if remastering would help. On the other hand, the muddy sound does add to the spacy vibe, so maybe it's not all bad.)

As far as the question of Pre Buckingham-Nicks S/D, the answer as far as I can tell is that pretty much everything is essential. Haven't found an album yet that I don't like, and am now working on live stuff, boots, etc. Maybe the Live In Chicago isn't so hot, but I haven't heard that since I was like 12.

Buckingham seems like the kind of guy who, after hearing your demos, would mumble, "Mm, yeah, great, lemme think about it," then not return your phone calls for months. Meanwhile, he's adding eight million guitar overdubs and crazy harmonies.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 01:26 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah I think the deal with Buckingham as producer would be you'd have to cede total control to him. not all producers are like that and most artists can't handle it because they have been raised to think that The Artist must have The Vision etc

maybe I should call Lindsay up though and see if he's got some time in June

Ok I worship the band. But whoever wrote that 1995's Buckingham/Nicksless Time was worthwhile owes me the 60:19 that allmusic says it took me to listen to this Olive Garden rock. Seriously - remember that $15/plate dinner you had after some boring milestone in your life? The one with funky breadsticks, the "authentic" entrée created by corporate committee, the glass of wine you didn't like much but drank anyway cuz it conferred class upon you? No? Exactly! That's this album which even Mick and the McVies probably don't remember, though I bet Dave Mason and Bekka Bramlett (who learned little from ma and pa) have fond memories. So, yeah destroy.
