Has anyone read this and if so would you recommend it?

Yeah, I read it a handful of years ago. I didn't really get a lot out of it. I'd say though if

The Fall
Gang Of Four
Mission Of Burma
Flipper
The Wipers
Glen Branca
Erik Satie
Scott Walker
ESG
Liquid Liquid
DNA
Chrome
U-Roy

means little to you, then you might find the essays helpful. For me it picks a little too many obvious targets (Nick Drake, PiL, Beefheart) and would have hugely benefited from a companion CD.

I agree with the "too many obvious" names, but I found it pretty interesting.

this is an excellent book to give to a young person I think! It is certainly worth a read for anyone else but I don't know if I would recommend laying down actual money for it.

Someone gave this to one of my good friends and sparked his interest in awesome music despite him living in Bumfuck, WI.

Everyone else is sort of paraphrasing what I intended to say (I think). That is, someone who frequently reads ILM at present, and understands most of the conversations, will get little more than half-decent precis of artists they either already like, or know about. Someone who is, perhaps, not as musically experienced, will benefit from the book hugely.
