Makes me very happy, very happy indeed. BEST POP SONG ON THE RADIO RIGHT NOW, better than "Toxic," better than "Yeah," better than everything.

Howard and co. were ranking on it this morning, saying it was a sell-out move, too happy and far afield from their usual mopey selves. And the video apparently has Shrek and Donkey dancing around.

too happy and far afield from their usual mopey selves

This is apparently a bad thing?

I am neither.

Why is anybody still talking about the Counting Crows? It's long over, I'm afraid.

BEST POP SONG ON THE RADIO RIGHT NOW, better than "Toxic," better than "Yeah," better than everything.

For this to happen, the band themselves would have to not actually exist.

A shiny new ribbon to anyone who's actually heard the song.

the coffee shop@ my school plays them way too much

It's OK. Nice, actually. Much better than "Rain King" or "Round Here" or whatever the hell Howard Stern likes to listen to while teasing his hair and grousing. I'd love to hear how HS feels about "Big Yellow Cab"!!!

Next up: DJs that piss & moan about Pearl Jam because they stopped "rocking" after _Vs._

rrrroouuunnnd heeeeere

I've heard it, and yes, it's insanely hooky. I wish he didn't repeat "love" twice in the verse -- it sounds so punched in and overdubbed. But it's damn catchy, you're right about that.

Neb Reyob (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

just downloaded this: GRATE.

but then i think "august and everything after" is extremely terrific, so i'll be laughed outta here.

but yeah - such exuberance, such SURPRISE in it. a confetti explosion on a lonely day.

Sean M (Sean M), Thursday, 27 May 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

this band is exclusively tailored now to do nothing but provide songs for soundtracks, then put out albums that get sold back in vast quantities.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 27 May 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

it's the circle of life

Since Smashmouth does relate to Shrek soundtracks I will throw in that they were just yesterday booted from the Main Stage July 4th line-up at the St. Louis Fair because a Corporate muck-a-muck was offended by their coarse profanity at a recent private show for his company. The local newspaper had just a week before posted a triumphant story about the Fair finally landing a band that would appeal to the Young Crowd.

The Tom Waits song in Shrek2 is waaaaaaaaay better. Duh.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 27 May 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

hey avery we've still got al green!

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 27 May 2004 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

anyway yeah this song is ridiculous heave-inducing fun, superhigh burn factor, I'm playing it a ton before the other stations get a chance to burn it out.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 27 May 2004 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, you can count ME out of Fair St. Louis now.

No Smashmouth = no fun.

stephen morris (stephen morris), Thursday, 27 May 2004 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard it and I thought it was silly so I turned it off

I don't typically consider myself above silly things, either

I didn't find it enjoyable

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 27 May 2004 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The supernal creamy goodness of Al Green's voice singing oldies and new ones? You bet, Ya Mo B There, even if Michael McDonald-a real life St. Louis--won't.

avery schreiber, Thursday, 27 May 2004 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw them on Letterman last night. The song wasn't as bad as I expected it to be, but the singer's squid shaped dreadlocks and doofy facial expressions combined with the guitar player's need to doofily lunge and duck in time with his lead lines kind of obliterated any chance of gaining my respect.....those doofuses.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 27 May 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

It's "doofi."

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 27 May 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

pronounced "doofy"

Sean M (Sean M), Thursday, 27 May 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I assume this refers to a different Counting Crows than the ones that deserve to die.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Thursday, 27 May 2004 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I was dragged to a concert (at a college no less) where the singer demonstrated that he was exceedingy pompus, concieted, and self-deluded. It would be excusable if the music didn't absolutely suck.

Michael Patrick mpb (Michael Patrick Brady), Friday, 28 May 2004 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

He's starting to resemble those throwable radishes from Super Mario Bros. 2 more and more every day...

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Friday, 28 May 2004 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
the video for this song is absolutely terrifying, a CGI rabbit with the voice of Adam Duritz AND HIS DREADLOCKS serenading a girl in her underwear.
