Can anyone tell me if this is worth me breaking my 'don't buy any CDs ever again' rule for? I'm not sure I've ever heard any of the tracks. It's all Chess stuff. It's the old sound of Chicago, not the new sound.

1. Howlin Wolf - Evil
2. Bo Diddley - Another Sugar Daddy
3. Etta James - Tell Mama
4. The Stereos - Stereo Freeze
5. The Soulful Strings - Burning Spear
6. Ramsey Lewis - Party Time
7. Eve Barnum - Please Newsboy
8. Dorothy Ashby - Soul Vibrations
9. Little Milton - More and More
10. Lorez Alexandria - Baltimore Oriole
11. Majestic Choir & The Soul Stirrers - Why Am I Treated So Bad
12. Phil Upchurch - The Way I Feel
13. Buddy Guy - She Suits Me A Tee
14. Rotary Connection (with Minnie Riperton)-Memory Band
15. Etta James-You Got It
16. Muddy Waters – I Just Want To Make Love To You
17. Laura Lee - Mama’s Got A Good Thing Going
18. Sonny Cox - The Wailer
19. Gene Chandler - In My Body’s House
20. Fontella Bass - Leave It In The Hands Of Love

I think that the Howlin Wolf is taken off This Is Howlin Wolf's New Album, which I've wanted to hear for ages, where Chess did to Chester what they'd done to Muddy on the Electric Mud album.

I haven't actually seen this comp though, so I might be waaaay off the mark. It's the Soul Jazz thing yeah?

I would totally buy this for a good overview of the various things Chess had going on in the 60s -- for me, it's cool to see a comp that includes uptown Chicago soul (Gene Chandler, Fontella Bass), jazzy progressive stuff (Dorothy Ashby, Phil Upchurch, Rotary Connection), earthier southern-style vocal soul (Etta James, Laura Lee) and straight blues (Wolf, Buddy Guy). All played, I assume, by the same basic group of musicians. Plus a bunch of rare stuff I've never heard of -- hey, how long till payday???

Yes, it's a Soul Jazz release. I've got some Chess stuff on Kent compilations, but this looks a bit more loon-friendly, although that might be just the pictures.

Yeah, the advert had a bizarre picture of Bo Diddley wearing some sort of S&M boddice! I damn well hope they're focussing on the freaky side of things... (no disrespect to the non-freaky Chess stuff, but that's been comped a gazillion times and I doubt SJ would just want to repeat that)

"Tell Mama" was recorded at Muscle Shoals, I think. They've a nerve saying it was from Chicago! Now Soul Jazz have released it, can I claim it's from London? It's not very 'freaky'

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, Etta James going all Aretha with Muscle Shoals musicians must've seemed pretty freaky in its day.

briania (briania), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a different kind of freaky from the man Diddley togging up in a bodice though innit?

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Tell Mama, Bo.

There's a shop here that gets the Soul Jazz stuff on vinyl ... eventually. So this one will be definitely finding its way to my keeper shelf sometime this summer.

This looks really fuckin' ace

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe that's just the non-freaky track to keep all the squares on board.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Shame they couldn't find any room for any of the material Irma Thomas recorded in Muscle Shoals for Chess. That is, I think, my favourite of the chess oeuvre (mind I'm not a massive follower of the blues).

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 27 May 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

(My point is not to knock this comp which looks very fine, but to say "Irma Thomas: the Muscle Shoals Sessions" is amazing.)

bo diddley had some classic album covers.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Thursday, 27 May 2004 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I have listened to half of this. I would say it has a similar normal/freaky ratio to the Studio One Scorcher Instrumentals CD.

It is very good.
