There's a new Mis-Teeq single???? Details plz.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, they're putting their record out in America this summer, so it's probably just a U.S. release of some song that came out months ago. I can't remember the name of it but it has sirens in the chorus.

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, that would be "Scandalous".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that's one of my favorite songs on the radio these days. It's doing pretty well too. Sugababes and Girls Aloud are supposed to get U.S. releases this summer too, but I haven't heard them yet.

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

On U.S. radio that is. I've heard Sugababes and Girls Aloud before.

minna (minna), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh well the "weak" whispery deliver doesn't hurt much! I love the descending high bit "sexy independent kinda spendin' type!" Or even better, the slightly outraged quasi-operatic "(something)(something) tryin'a hit..." bit which is very late perod En Vogue innit.

Plus I don't think many people sound better than Petey Pablo on a crunk track - his comparatively smooth slick vocals just sound so gentlemenly and seductive, at least compared to, like, Banner or Lil' Jon or someone.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 05:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Paris Hilton, heiress to the billion dollar Hilton Hotel fortune and star of the hit television show "The Simple Life," is working on an album with Lil Jon.

"We met at the MTV Movie Awards where we were hosting pre-show," Lil Jon told AllHipHop.com. "We talked about me doing some s*t on her album and so we hooked up and talked and its going down."

Hilton is negotiating with a major label and according to reports, has already laid down several tracks with Lil Jon for her debut album tentatively titled Screwed.

While the release is meant to showcase Hilton's singing ability, the album may include a rapping Hilton.

"The Simple Life 2," Hilton's reality show, premiered last night (June 16) on Fox.

The show features Hilton and Lionel Ritchie's daughter Nicole, travelling in a trailer and working odd jobs.

JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 21 June 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard the Sugababes couldn't be arsed to promo tour the US properly, but that's another thread. The Janet track is pretty good.

Hey wow, "Goodies" was produced by Lil Jon. I guess that's why it reminds me of FILA.

Ade (Adrian Langston), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 08:46 (twenty-one years ago)

"Goodies" essentially sounds like a riff on "Freek-A-Leek" and is therefore BRILLIANT.

Nivea feat. Youngbloodz and Lil Jon - "OK"

This track isn't anywhere near as good as "Goodies" and I really dislike the melody (what the hell is the melody it's biting? I can't think of what its from, it's really obvious though). But - more bubble crunk.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"Goodies" makes me froth at the mouth with Alex In NYC-style hatred, as does the phrase "BubbleCrunk" (which is almost as bad as "Crunk'n'B", which is what they called it in the TV ad for the album).

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Why do you hate it so?

Also bubble crunk sort of bothers me as well but first does anyone know the origins of the name?

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i made it up yo

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't understand the hatred for "Goodies" at all but it's so widespread...

I thought "Bubblecrunk" came from this thread??

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

It does? Well then. How'd you think of it?

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

uh, i heard someone say bubble gum pop mixed with crunk and i mixed the two together. not rocket science.

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

am i the next simon reynolds?!

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

well, my hatred of "Goodies" is a little exaggerated. when something's on the radio that much I can't be bothered to turn it off every single time it comes on, so I have found myself surrendering and humming along a little. it's just that it's like the worst part of every Lil Jon song before the hi-hats kick in and it gets really good, except the hi-hats NEVER kick in and it just keeps on like that for the whole song. and the vocal melody is just ghastly. but her 2nd single w/ Missy is much much better.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the melody is great! Al what do you think of "OK" by Nivea?

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't heard it. are they just trying to make a hook out of one of LJ's catchphrases, a la "Yeah!"? (the remix of "Yeah!" w/ Nivea was good)

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes basically.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

has he done one called "What?" yet?

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, what I want is him to do a song called “ok ok hold the fuck up, hold the fuck up, i’m lookin around this bitch, I see a lot of niggas ain’t throwin up shit, y’all niggas must be scared to represent yo shit, you must be scared, nigga, fuck that shit, all my real niggas that’s proud of they hood, all my real ladies that’s proud of they hood, that ain’t neva been scared, say this shit: BITCH I AIN’T SCARED, BITCH I AIN’T SCARED, BITCH I AIN’T SCARED, I AIN’T SCARED, MOTHERFUCKER”

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a song by Yonnie on the new Ying Yang Twin's album called "In Da Club" (not related to the 50cent song) that is kinda nice, but completely steals it's melody and rhythm from an Aaliyah song.

and i downloaded a few more songs from the Ciara album and on many, many songs, she's trying to sound like Aaliyah

Yeah I was right, "Okay" basically describes how good this song is.

I'm really liking the Lowbudget mix at the moment. 'Get Some Crunk In Your System' is an awesome track.

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Sunday, 28 November 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Bubblecrunk or crunk'n'b or whatever it's called >>>>>>>>>>>>>> crunk.
no fraid not

why do you think this?

I like crunk a lot, but I prefer crunk'n'b because I can actually take it in doses of more than four songs at a time. Crunk Juice is great but I'll be listening to Ciara's album a lot more.

Also because crunk is so unapologetically in-your-face with its masculinity, the whole rappers-shouting-at-strippers thing, it's nice to see Ciara and Nivea ("OK" is amazing btw) twisting that template and turning it into something very sensual and feminine.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 28 November 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree it's interesting for that reason, but better?

Hari, that album is rediculous - the Trillville/Lil Scrappy one. Check it out.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Sunday, 28 November 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, better for me. I mean, I like R&B better than hip-hop in general anyway so this is no surprise. I guess I don't like it being treated as just an offshoot, a diverting subset, of the main movement when in my eyes it's at least equally worthy of attention.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 28 November 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

When its more than a 4-song genre, let me know ;-)

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Sunday, 28 November 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

That is a fair point. But, y'know, entire awesome Ciara album to thread.

BubbleCrunk is just synth&b, and hence grebt.

real crunk was better before lil jon sold it out.

entire awesome Ciara album to thread

Can you recommend a song or two?

JoB (JoB), Sunday, 28 November 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, there are the true bubblecrunk singles which you've probably heard - "Goodies", "1 2 Step", "Hotline". I love the way each of those is so bare, so sparse, and yet they'd each sound awesome in a club - as if Ciara is trying to strip her songs down to the bare minimum of sound with which she can still get crunk. "Oh" is a lot like those, but she also tries to be reducing the necessary melodic range at the same time, the entire thing hovers around the same notes and yet is super-catchy! Even Ludacris is restrained on it.

"Thug Style" really channels the spirit of Aaliyah, though Ciara floats over her songs in a kind of ecstatic, dreamy way rather than haunting them like Aaliyah did. "Next To You" is a really gorgeous, flowing R Kelly collaboration which is like an early 90s soul ballad re-imagined through 2004 production. "Pick Up The Phone" is amazing, just because it's so ambiguous - it's another mid-tempo, Aaliyah-esque cut, but the lyrics! Ciara is desperate for her boy to answer her calls, but the nature of their relationship is never made clear: is she a neglected girlfriend? Is she suspicious or worried by her boy's lack of communication? Is it an unrequited crush? Is she a psycho stalker? Every time I listen to it I think it's a different story.

This hasn't really narrowed it down to 'one or two' songs... and "Other Chicks" and "Lookin' At You" are great too. It's just a fantastic album all the way through.

WHAT HAPPENED TO NSS16?!

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

Pussycat dolls - Don't cha
Cassie feat YYT - Me & you

do these count? like both.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

i can't believe you named the Pusycat Dolls rather than Tori Alamaze

i haven't heard the second track. i'll download now.

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

that Cassie track is pretty great. i downloaded both the Ying Yang Twins version and the Ray J version. for some reason, the Ray J version has way more wicked rave synths and vocal effects (actually maybe not, it's just a worse mp3 encoding). and the YYT seem to be recycling stuff from some of their new songs (and the intro is part of Wait).

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

is that kelis reply to wait real?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

can someone gmail me the cassie track please?

I have yet to encounter a bubblecrunk song I don't love wholeheartedly.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

i'll YSI it

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

i haven't heard this "kelis reply" yet. i'll do a wee search now.

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

Can you throw up the Kelis reply if you find it before I do (I will do the same)?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

i think i heard that before, but forget who it's by (doubt it's kelis - but that's what my search on limewire turned up too). i'm sure it's somewhere on the YYT thread.

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

here's the cassie and ray j track

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

hey J i never knew the story behind don't cha! i guess i should hear the alamaze vers.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

It is much better.

Actually I don't really understand the point of Pussycat Dolls - you get one singer doing everything and then about a gazillion others just doing back-up vocals in the chorus.

Which would make sense if they were all better looking than the lead singer but they really aren't.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

actually it sounds to me like the lead singer is doing overdubs on the backup vocals too. I love the way the whole Pussycat Dolls thing makes the Alamaze fans squirm, though.

We need to talk about Cassie's "Me & U". Seriously dudes. Apparently it's about a year old, but it's just becoming a hit now, I hear this about half a year ago and it had R. Kelly or Ray J or someone rapping on it and I didn't pay much attention, but its all over the radio now and rapidly approaching song of the year status for me.

The thing I love about this song is that it's so fucking icy. Everything sounds as if it's about as indifferent to me as if I were 2 rooms away and so thin it'll break. The vocals are protooled to hell but that only adds to the effect. I know people talk about Ciara's "blaseness", but that never really grabbed me like this does. (I love her songs, but not for that particular reason.) Maybe its because Ciara never (at least on her hit singles) had production as cold as her personality.

I especially love the "Hey!" at 2:10 that feels like the only glimmer of spontaneous human emotion.

(How the hell did "Girlfight" not get mentioned in this thread?)

some "girl" named Aimee just emailed me last week asking me to send her that Cassie song. i emailed her back to ask which version she wanted and she never responded.

the reason i question if it's a girl is i was wondering if it was aimee/luna so i put the email address into myspace and some dude named Terrell came up.

Terrell, guess you're not getting yr song, bro

jaxonologist (jaxon), Thursday, 27 April 2006 05:05 (twenty years ago)

i love 'me & u', i agree about the iciness: cassie's glacial vox seem more deliberate than ciara's, who basically sings like that because she can't sing any other way (still love her though).

there was an entire separate brooke valentine thread!
