are mediocre CD's a waste of money?

i personally don't find them to be. i find buying a CD, listening a few times, and forming an opinion is worth the money - even if i find the record useless, and never feel the need to give it more than a couple of spins. i might be curious to hear something - then i buy and find it disappointing - but perhaps it was still worth it just to have my curiosity satisfied?

do you feel like you've wasted your money if you buy a disappointing cd?

is the pleasure of listening to music sometimes satisfying a curiosity/desire to hear something that you're interested in, without that thing necessarily being good?

I used to be more of the opinion that life's too short for medicre records. My record collection was almost as much about what what I didn't have as what I did. Now I'm less uptight.

I buy CDs that I know are crap occasionally just to annoy myself. I have some Alanis, Phish, etc. No CD is a waste of money to me, but I'm a recorded music junky who's about to send away for all 35 Jandek records so don't listen to me.

It can be worth the money ... if we're talking about a small amount of money.
This is where buying used CD's comes in handy. I'm more likely to take a chance on something and not care as much if it isn't a great CD.

(having said this, i wouldn't buy a record that i know/am fairly sure is mediocre. it's just that i find listening and forming a judgement as interesting as listening to something i've already heard a fair bit and know i like)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 27 May 2004 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and nick OTM, I used to be the same way but now I've opened the floodgates and watched my collection bloosom into exhilarating incoherence.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 27 May 2004 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

bloosom = blossom hahaha

The worst taste is "good" taste. And since we're all going to die, how can money be wasted?

noodle vague (noodle vague), Thursday, 27 May 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i wouldn't be mad when i bought disappointing CDs if i had a job.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 27 May 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, I do get some enjoyment from even the worst CDs. For instance, the second (meaning the Former infatuation whatever)Alanis record has an unintentionally hilarious production style(to say nothing of her lyrics). It's like that idiot producer's idea of a dense exotic textured sound. Seriously, listen to it on headphones in the dark and just tune out the vocals, it's truly bonkers.

Are CDs a waste of money? Yes.

DJ BEAST OF LEGEND, Thursday, 27 May 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Paying for mediocrity seems like it would be a massive waste of time. Now paying for an excellent CD, now that's something.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 27 May 2004 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't want to overstate my interest in bad music here, I'm talking maybe 10 CDs out of like 500.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 27 May 2004 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i pretty much buy used or at shows, and i usually have heard something a couple times (thx slsk) before i bite. i might take a chance on something unknown if its an artist's older (or newer) album, or if it's on a label i really respect (kranky, planet mu)

it's only money but i seem to have less and less of the stuff these days...

djs: same question but with for vinyl.

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Thursday, 27 May 2004 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to buy everything I wanted to hear. Now, I don't. And I find myself appreciating things that I do wind up buying so much more; it's like, records are special again! So yes, buying mediocre music is a waste of time. that's what downloading is for.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 27 May 2004 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i am so uptight about this. i am utterly horrified if i accidentally bring home a mediocre record. sometimes i spent a bit of effort trying to convince myself it is not mediocre. sometimes i even try to convince others. i do this less now. i think my taste would be more adventurous if i wasn't so allergic to mediocre records.

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 27 May 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

you are a funny fellow

new topic: are mediocre cds a waste of downloading?

harshaw (jube), Friday, 28 May 2004 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

answer: yes

harshaw (jube), Friday, 28 May 2004 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

christhamrin (christhamrin), Friday, 28 May 2004 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Then again the question is kind of bullshit. It allows everyone to pat themselves on the back and say they only listen to music that is classic.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Friday, 28 May 2004 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i listen to a lot of mediocre music! like this fucking earth CD. how totally talentless.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 28 May 2004 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Which one is it?

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Friday, 28 May 2004 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"we are talentless and shoot guns"

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Friday, 28 May 2004 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Mediocre CD's are the best argument for downloading.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 28 May 2004 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh do they have a new album then

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Friday, 28 May 2004 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

if it wasn't cds it would be booze so no

Is mediocre beer a waste of money?
