"Private Life" - Grace Jones

I think this is my favorite Grace Jones song. It's all about the groove, kinda salsa, kinda reggae. Haven't heard the Pretenders version.

"Last Days of Disco" - Yo La Tengo

Such a heart-breaking, melancholy song. I love the Can style polyrhythms and the line 'And the song said "Let's be happy"/I was happy' always gets me.

I've been trying to figure out what the tune of the line 'And the song said "Let's be happy"' reminds me of. Got something Celtic about it, wouldn't you say? Sounds like a sad Scottish air to me...

Songs that describe themselves.

And the song said 'Don't be lonely'
It makes me lonely,
I hear it and I'm lonely more and more.

'Private Life' is a great song. I don't mind the Grace Jones version but The Pretenders version is just wonderful. The band were just completely on fire in the studio that day. Everything about it - the super cool guitars, Chrissie Hynde's timing on the vocals, even the white-guys-try-raggae bass & drums - are immaculate.

Must check out that Pretenders version then!
