Songs Which Are Benefitted from Their Out-Of-Tuneness

The Supremes - "Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart"
The bass is noticably too sharp, but it doesn't really detract
from the song. In fact, it adds to Diana's first few lines a
strange, raga-like starkness. These are the kind of happy
accidents that are proscribed in these days of pro tools.
There must be more examples of
out-of-tune instruments benefitting the tune, anyone?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Friday, 28 May 2004 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Sometimes, it's just kind of charming. The bass is out of tune on some of the Hackamore Brick album. I like it. Same goes for the '70s Korean band San Ul Lim. I just listened to Van der Graaf's Aerosol Grey Machine and the acoustic guitar is out of tune on that great first track, "Afterwards." I like it; it's charming.

What's out of tune on "Apples and Oranges?"

Tim Ellison, Friday, 28 May 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Velvet Underground - the guitar and violin clashing in "Venus and Furs"
Burning Spear - the horns in "Marcus Garvey"

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Friday, 28 May 2004 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

the lead guitar part that opens "Apples and Oranges" is totally out of tune. And it stays out of tune for the rest of the song.

Sonic Youth and Pavement were more cases of alternate tunings were they not?

Cap'n Jazz sucked.

They might suck, but I like them. I feel some shame for this. Even more for the Promise Ring song I like.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Friday, 28 May 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Sonic Youth and Pavement were more cases of alternate tunings were they not?

Well, in terms of the instruments, yeah, you can definitely say that. You can't make that argument about their singing, though.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 28 May 2004 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

"The lead guitar part that opens "Apples and Oranges" is totally out of tune. And it stays out of tune for the rest of the song."

He's just doing a lot of string bending. Sounds fairly in tune on the parts where he's not.

Start setting up cheap guitars in odd tunings or with strange string sets and I would almost guarantee the intonation is rarely going to be dead on across the guitar.

chris besinger (chris besinger), Friday, 28 May 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

x-post: Not to mention the fact that any guitar has to be set for intonation and a lot of people certainly go into the studio without it having been done.

Tim Ellison, Friday, 28 May 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The Shaggs, the best band ever.

Elvis is Dead, Friday, 28 May 2004 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

The intonation isn't really dead on for a guitar even in standard tuning and recently set up for whatever strings are on it. Guitars are simply not perfect instruments.

Also, any guitar with a single-piece bridge (like most acoustics) will never have perfect intonation since strings cannot be adjusted individually.
