We've covered Montgomery Gentry and Big & Rich, but what about Gretch?

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 28 May 2004 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Hell, yeah!

briania (briania), Friday, 28 May 2004 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Is she the Kelis to B&R's Neptunes?

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 28 May 2004 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I once knew a really lame person with this name. Glad this isn't her.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 28 May 2004 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not feeling this as much as Big & Rich. Not as boombastic.

frankE (frankE), Friday, 28 May 2004 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

it's a good CD, only about 2 or 3 duds, but the rest are aces.

highlights
-racing tricked out chariots with her Cherokee great great grandfather on "Chariot," putting a number 8 on the side, making you think it's cuz of Dale Jr but really it's the age she got saved.
-classic honky-tonk on "When It Rains," classic tearjerker on "When I Feel Like Cheatin'," classic domestic drama on "The Bed"
-"Redneck Woman" of course

Josh Love (screamapillar), Friday, 28 May 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

"Homewrecker" and "Here for the Party" (VERY swinging rhythm on that one) and maybe "Pocahantas Proud" (I forget how that one goes at the moment) are great too. Album definitely has a shot at my top ten, though yeah, Big & Rich is almost definitely a shoo-in for the number one spot unless some kind of miracle happens between now & December.

She is quite an attractive woman as well, by the way.

Anyway, here's Cibula's review:

she looks like a low-rent Lisa Marie in that picture.

December.

Well, Easter's passed, does P&J polling close before Dec. 25?

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 28 May 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
Is it just me or does "What Happened" sound like Nora Jones?

frankE (frankE), Monday, 14 June 2004 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Brett you wouldn't happen to be a fan of the genre known as "indie rock", would you?

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 21 July 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

Not much of the current crop, no. I'll give you that Wilson is better than most of her contemporaries, but she still doesn't make good country music. I am not a fan of 99.9% of today's country. It reminds me too much of 80s pop.

Brett Hickman (Bhickman), Thursday, 21 July 2005 02:28 (twenty years ago)

the similarities between "redneck woman" and "do you really want to hurt me?" are almost eerie.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 21 July 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)

Brett, my Nashville buddy Blair Keso said it well, and it's always behooved me to remember this:

"Country music is anything Nashville says it is at the time."

It's music FOR a certain demographic who are comfortable with CCR, Syknyrd, Tom Petty, Journey, whatever...not BY "country" people. Suburbanites who can change their own oil, string their own weedeaters, and who would probably help you put on a new water pump if it came down to it. And remember that hardly any country musicians COME FROM Nashville--very few. Laura Cantrell does. Maybe Minnie Pearl did, and DeFord Bailey. It's where you go to make music. Half of what Nashville does these days is like powerpop or something even if the guys making it and the people consuming have never heard of Big Star or Marshall Crenshaw...

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

I liked Gretchen Wilson's album a lot more than Big & Rich's, it just seemed like less caricature in the performance.
