donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 29 May 2004 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

It will be crap, c'mon, you know it will be.

Gone are the days of decent VH1 programs. "Bands on the Run", "Behind the Music"....and, hell, "Bands Reunited" were great. Now they're just shlock.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

But....who'm I kidding? I'll watch it. Just to get mad.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

the tragic thing is that no one at VH1 probably knows anything about Mayhem

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 29 May 2004 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The top five will have at least two moments that will prompt you to throw something at your TV. Like a stupid saying or act by Fred Durst. You can dread it, but you just know that it will happen.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 29 May 2004 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Too, too true.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

#1 is gonna be Ozzy's dove incident

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 29 May 2004 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Or something phag like Led Zeppelin recording their first album.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 29 May 2004 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

"the tragic thing is that no one at VH1 probably knows anything about Mayhem"

Actually on "Best Week Ever" one time they had a thing about an accident involving a pig's head falling on an audience member at a Mayhem show.

But yeah, VH1's too stupid to put them in the 100 Most Metal Moments. They'll probably just talk about how great Sebastian Bach was or some stupid shit like that.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

#1. Black Metal Church Burnings!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I REALLY REALLY hope this show has Alice Cooper and Moby giving ups to Burzum

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 29 May 2004 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

1. Ozzy bites head off dove
2. Nevermind released
3. Purple Rain opens in theaters

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 29 May 2004 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Number one should be release of first Byzantum LP, fall 2004. if this VH1 you speak (I never watch televisin) knew what they list about, they would postpone and wait for release. but they have not the power or precognshion the nightspirit enables. weakling christians husky domesticating synth playrs!

Vas Djifrens (latebloomer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually think the Mayhem/pig thing IS on the top 100.
I have a vid of Nitro guy playing the 4 necked guitar with two hands and Alice Cooper getting whomped with a pie on stage from the audience, hopefully those made it....

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Saturday, 29 May 2004 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

From VH1.com

69. Mayhem embody black metal with suicide, homicide, and cannibalism.

So yeah, they made it. A few other dark metal bands too, as well as The Decline of Western Civilization Part II.

The number one moment is lame beyond belief.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Saturday, 29 May 2004 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

heh-heh, 69. heheheheheh.

beavis (latebloomer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

#1. VELVET REVOLVER

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 29 May 2004 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

ugh, that #1 moment IS lame.
The top ten is mostly decent though, but I could imagine myself throwing something at the TV for #4 and #1, as promised (I don't get VH1 here, so I will never know for sure).

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 29 May 2004 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

#1 THAT KORN VIDEO ABOUT HOW MUCH THE RECORDING INDUSTRY SUCKS DUDE

harshaw (jube), Saturday, 29 May 2004 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Just looked it up. Ugh. I'm not going to ruin it for anyone who is actually excited about watching, but oooff......what an anticlimax.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, I think their facts re: #3 are going to be challenged by Gene Simmons.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

But....who'm I kidding? I'll watch it. Just to get mad.

Hell, just watch it to gloat over the fact you have better musical taste now. (Does anyone dare admit they still like Warrant, for one?)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 29 May 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Chuck Eddy does.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

...`cos he's a dancin' fool.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously? Say it ain't so, Chuck! I still respect you, though....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 29 May 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

It's chuck and metal mike saunders aginst the world!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

...`cos he's a dancin' fool.

HAHA!

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 29 May 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

It's chuck and metal mike saunders aginst the world!

If you can champion Warrant, you better be brave....though crazy works, too.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 29 May 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

(Like I'm not gonna watch the countdown, anyway.)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 29 May 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

How one can champion Warrant and still refer to themselves as "Metal..." anything is an affront to logic.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, I owe you a beer, just for that....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 29 May 2004 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Warrant's awesome, but I don't think I can refer to them as metal without adding the prefix "pop."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 29 May 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

You're a sick man, Anthony.

You're on, Nichole.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

and me and Di were praising Warrant on ILX long before Metal Mike e-mails started showing up on random threads.

(x-post)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 29 May 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

and anybody who mourns the glory days of VH1 shouldn't be calling anybody else sick.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 29 May 2004 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahahaha...touche!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I am almost ashamed to admit that I spent hours yesterday watching Metal Mania and then 100 most metal moments. I can't wait for more metal moments all week. Is it really true that the fish in the Faith No More video was Bjork's fish?! That was the most shocking moment to me.

queenbee (queenbee), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

After opening my trap, you would know I missed it all. (Was out all day & night yesterday.) Bless the Viacom fairies, I'll prolly see it this weekend.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck, that #1 moment is about as metal as working for a multinational corporation is punk.

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

But DUUUUUUDE didn't Alternative Tentacles have a London branch once?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

After that miserable piece of shit "100 Worst Songs Ever" or whatever left me depressed for two days, I was totally surprised at how this metal show was totally fun in a Darkness video mode. I guess I saw 3% of it, so hopefully they'll rerun it 69 times this month. Ya think?

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The fact that VH1 sees Metallica suing their fans as more metal than what Mayhem did probably tells you everthing you need to know. And yet I'll watch this anyway.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, Sheed, shouldn't you be preparing for game 6 instead of wasting time on an interweb dork board?

Lazer Guided Mellow Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

This is all part of my preparation. Fear not. I run out to the shootaround between posts.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Any guarantees for tonight?

Lazer Guided Mellow Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I can tell you wih 100% certainty that we are playing the Pacers tonight. Take it to the bank.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm taking that to Vegas!

Lazer Guided Mellow Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I missed all of it, but ya know they're going to re-broadcast the snots out of it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Xasthur's recording technique, as described in an interview with Maelstrom, strikes me as an all time metal moment:

Maelstrom: Do you use a 4 track?

Malefic: Yes, I do, but I bounce tracks on a CD-R burner.

Maelstrom: What does that mean? Is that like you combine tracks?

Malefic: The way it's done on a four track by cassette is a different way than what I do: I fill up all four tracks on a good quality cassette, put them onto CD-R, take that CD-R and put it into a Discman, then plug the Discman into a CD burner and plug guitar/bass/whatever into the four track and ALSO the four track into the CD burner and play along with the CD-R in the Discman. Both the Discman and guitar going into the four track are being recorded onto another CD-R. Repeat process for more tracks. It's an unconventional method, but it gets he job done!

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Just saw the first installment, and I didn't see it all.

But the sequence where Alice Cooper said that, being from Detroit, he thought chickens could fly, followed by the footage of him throwing the chicken into the audience backed with "Fly to the Angels" was, I think, one of the most metal moments ever all by itself.

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Thursday, 3 June 2004 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

But ya know, that footage (Alice recounting the infamous "chicken incident") has been BEATEN TO DEATH ON A THOUSAND OTHER VH1 SHOWS,.....it's just embarassing.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 3 June 2004 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I know. "Fly to the Angels" was inspired, though.

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Thursday, 3 June 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh but Alice, he's a "normal" guy. He likes hamburgers. He plays golf.
They call it SHTICK, you know.

sexyDancers, Thursday, 3 June 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"But ya know, that footage (Alice recounting the infamous "chicken incident") has been BEATEN TO DEATH ON A THOUSAND OTHER VH1 SHOWS,.....it's just embarassing. "

yeah, i beat my chicken to death every night and you don't see me on vh1! THANK YOU EVRYBODY GOOD NIGHT! *ducks and runs off stage as people throw vegetables and glass bottles*

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 3 June 2004 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

...How many times are Motley Crue on this list?

I wish they'd recycled more Marilyn Manson.

Atnevon (Atnevon), Friday, 4 June 2004 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Sebastian Bach do anything else but appear on these shows?

hector (hector), Friday, 4 June 2004 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Watched much of it this evening. Yawn.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 4 June 2004 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Sebastian Bach do anything else but appear on these shows?
Better that then him making music. No-one wins when that happens.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Friday, 4 June 2004 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

wtf, what was #1

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Friday, 4 June 2004 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Kip Winger fucked a donkeys ass.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Friday, 4 June 2004 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

As soon as I heard the words "Pete Steele" on this show my mind flashed "DANGER DANGER"

The "most awesomely bad songs" thing is really awful. Many of those songs had already been included in VH1 "greatest" countdowns!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 4 June 2004 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

fuck spoilers - #1 was:
"Hear N' Aid" benefit album unites metal nation for the good of all.

That is sooo fucking stupid. "D-O-N-T-F-O-R-G-E-T-T-O-D-R-I-N-K-Y-O-U-R-O-V-A-L-T-I-N-E"

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 4 June 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

This special was actually pretty great, Snider was solid as narrator. Awesomely bad songs...I've said my piece.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Friday, 4 June 2004 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Sebastian Bach do anything else but appear on these shows?
Better that then him making music. No-one wins when that happens

Bahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 4 June 2004 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually he has been dividing his time between starring in musicals and getting arrested.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Why do people keep saying "was" when nos. 20-1 aren't being shown until tonight???

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 4 June 2004 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Because it's pretty simple to see the whole list online. Trust me. Number One is a big ol' letdown.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually he has been dividing his time between starring in musicals and getting arrested.

Hmm...

Rent (Boy)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

hahaha

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Metal Sludge has some things to say.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 June 2004 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
anyone watching this "history of metal" thing thats been on VH1 all week? ILM's own Ian Christe is on at least one of the installments i saw.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 25 May 2006 04:51 (twenty years ago)

The parts I've seen have been really historically inaccurate and vague.

Zwan (miccio), Thursday, 25 May 2006 14:02 (twenty years ago)

Lots of broad strokes and howlers. The color commentators, Christe included, add only hagiography and trivial backslapping. Perhaps they did say something interesting but if so, it didn't make it past the cutting floor. There is one exception: Dee Snider. Last night he was the only person who went briefly into the fact the metal is not always the constant flow of excellence everyone else in the series portrays it as.

It's a disappointment in that it reduces quickly to only a couple threadbare memes: Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden are the be-all of metal in the first two. Hair metal and the PMRC in the third. Cant and mythology: Punk rock and rock critics nearly destroyed metal, the NWOBHM and Priest saved it.

We talked about this a bit on another thread, of which I forget the title. One of the people who would have been good as a balance on the show, opted out of being taped.

George 'the Animal' Steele, Thursday, 25 May 2006 15:29 (twenty years ago)

There's some discussion of it on this thread, too.

Eppy (Eppy), Thursday, 25 May 2006 15:37 (twenty years ago)

I went down to the VH-1 office, taped an interview for the show last year. I don't have cable, so I haven't been watching. Have I been on? Since what I said constantly counters what people are claiming is the thesis, I'm guessing not, but I'd love to know if I'm seen.

xhuxk, Thursday, 25 May 2006 17:04 (twenty years ago)

No, you haven't been on this week. Everyone who has been is seated in a very unique-looking room where the decor/theme seems to be antique muddy-red velvet and chintz. Was that were you were shot?

Anyway, did you have something to say about Metallica? They're apparently in the next segment.

It's entertaining to watch but way too top-heavy on the memes and propaganda. Too much Malcolm Dome, odd for a US-centric broadcast.
I'm hardly expecting Frontline PBS-style but it gets a bit much when you realize that the people furnishing comment are basically the
types that would say everything's great. If you asked them to take
a shit, all they'd have to say would be "how much?" and "what color?"

Directly to the point, again:

http://www.dickdestiny.com/blog/2006/05/he-was-metal-man-before-you-left-in.html

And, part II:

http://www.dickdestiny.com/blog/2006/05/he-was-metal-man-before-you-ii-nothing.html

I'm putting more on the blog today, mostly about "the first metal live album" meme on it, which went to Kiss Alive, ha-ha. There's a strong body of opinion that Kiss Alive, like a lot
of other "live" albums, ain't even that "alive." But that's another separate issue.

George 'the Animal' Steele, Thursday, 25 May 2006 17:21 (twenty years ago)

As said:

http://www.dickdestiny.com/blog/2006/05/heavy-is-new-lite-vh1-metal-special.html

George 'the Animal' Steele, Thursday, 25 May 2006 20:23 (twenty years ago)

is scott ian the employee of the month at vh-1? he's always on.
bruce dickinson would be great on ilm.
nikki sixx is pretentious but i can't figure out why. does he think 'girls girls girls' is a timeless memento of the age?

keyth (keyth), Friday, 26 May 2006 00:37 (twenty years ago)

I didn't watch the whole episode tonight but there were some quick clips of Chuck drolly reciting the names of metal genres intercut with more excited interviewees at the beginning of a segment. Don't know if they ever showed his name with a longer excerpt elsewhere.

Zwan (miccio), Friday, 26 May 2006 03:23 (twenty years ago)

We almost were gonna watch to see but they started talking about the return of Ozzy in the late 90s and it was all just too bland to bother with.

Zwan (miccio), Friday, 26 May 2006 03:24 (twenty years ago)

Don't know if they ever showed his name with a longer excerpt elsewhere.

He talked a bit about Guns N' Roses.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 26 May 2006 03:33 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it was just on again and I caught the Klosterman-Eddy back-to-back about how Guns'n'Roses was the one pop band Metallica fans accepted.

Zwan (miccio), Friday, 26 May 2006 04:23 (twenty years ago)

Mainly the only "rock journalist" is that british Malcolm Dome guy or whatever.

Is Chris Jericho actually a musician of renown or are they just humoring him?

Zwan (miccio), Friday, 26 May 2006 04:24 (twenty years ago)

I'm nobody's definition of a metal nut, but the whole VH1 Classic Metal Month thing has been annoying the hell out of me. They can't even bother to get anyone aside from Dee Snider or Sebastian Bach to show some humor or enthusiasm. It's all just old guys trying to make sure metal gets the "respect" it deserves and Eddie Trunk saying "I'm lovin' every minute of it" with less energy than I show at the DMV.

Zwan (miccio), Friday, 26 May 2006 04:28 (twenty years ago)

And evidently they'll only show the hyperactive pop-metal nerds when they're talking about the one group they're reverent about.

Zwan (miccio), Friday, 26 May 2006 04:30 (twenty years ago)

Mainly the only "rock journalist" is that british Malcolm Dome guy or whatever.

He's a fellow who more accurately fits the term hagiographer. Like I said, Heavy is the new Lite.

Missed Chuck tonight. I'll have to catch it in rerun. Was reading a review copy of a book on the imaginary "hafnium" bomb the government was/is funding. It wasn't "rock journalism" but it was engrossing.

George 'the Animal' Steele, Friday, 26 May 2006 04:57 (twenty years ago)

Is Chris Jericho actually a musician of renown or are they just humoring him?

They're just humoring him while insulting everyone else. He's the "singer" in Fozzy, an awful band that used to be the fair to good Stuck Mojo. As a joke, Fozzy was a story that was good for a paragraph or two a few years ago. Then they made the mistake of actually trying to make a pseudo-reality to fit it.

George 'the Animal' Steele, Friday, 26 May 2006 05:05 (twenty years ago)

I like it. It's broad, it's one-sided and it's basically just regurgitation of old info, but I'm really just a sucker for a competently-assembled VH-1 doc.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 26 May 2006 05:45 (twenty years ago)

the narrative stops with rap-metal—nothing was noteworthy past Limp Bizkit. they did 20 years in one episode— and only mentioned Slayer in passing.

however, watching Jani lane tear up while regretting "Cherry Pie" was pretty rivetting.

veronica moser (veronica moser), Friday, 26 May 2006 11:29 (twenty years ago)

I'm so glad I missed that.

Zwan (miccio), Friday, 26 May 2006 12:59 (twenty years ago)

he seemed pretty bitter. and puffy.

why do they never talk about grindcore, death or black metal on these specials as more than footnotes? its always about twisted sister and shit.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 26 May 2006 13:14 (twenty years ago)

i know i know, vh1 is catering mostly to nostalgia for people who grew up on glam metal in the 80's, but still.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 26 May 2006 13:15 (twenty years ago)

do you really want to see your favorite grindcore, death or black metal artists come off like tepid fossils the way Kerry King and Scott Ian did?

Zwan (miccio), Friday, 26 May 2006 13:32 (twenty years ago)

yes!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 26 May 2006 13:33 (twenty years ago)

actually, i'm just saying that they should include a hefty segment at the very least. if they're claiming to be an overview of metal, well death/black, grindcore, etc. are pretty important to any history of metal!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 26 May 2006 13:39 (twenty years ago)

I want Eddie Trunk holding court for FORTY FIVE MINUTES UNCUT AND UNCENSORED on Napalm Death.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 26 May 2006 13:44 (twenty years ago)

yes! the FCC should have a law mandating at least 15 minutes per metal special set aside for Pig Destroyer.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 26 May 2006 13:56 (twenty years ago)

Nina Blackwood on Opeth!
Stephen Pearcy on Isis!
Jani Lane on Avenged Sevenfold!

DO IT
