Am I wrong, or is she the best combination ever of beauty in both looks and voice?

Please reassure me that she is remembered...

greenmozzastate, Saturday, 29 May 2004 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i remember her for her quality lyrics and lovely voice

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Saturday, 29 May 2004 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw the Sundays live, and she was utterly dazzling in each capactiy. Where is she now?

Hard-hearted harbinger of haggis

Stacey Pollen (Andy K), Saturday, 29 May 2004 06:43 (twenty-two years ago)

well good, especially the first album--why do they take so long to make records? Their QC is second only to Kevin Shields!

steeve mcqueen (steeve mcqueen), Saturday, 29 May 2004 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

She is my favourite singer in the history of sound.

the pinefox, Saturday, 29 May 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine too. She sings in unbelievably beautiful and mysterious ways. If I ever have a daughter I'm naming her Harriet after Wheeler.

Hanna (Hanna), Saturday, 29 May 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

she has done more for the fantasy life of scruffy sensitive cardigan wearing indie boys than anyone save hope sandoval.

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 29 May 2004 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

indie types probably don't figure they have a chance with hope sandoval but harriet appears more approachable.

keith m (keithmcl), Saturday, 29 May 2004 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you saying she's a slapper?

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 29 May 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

no. hope sandoval has an icy personna in performance though, harriet seems warmer. this is no bad thing.

keith m (keithmcl), Saturday, 29 May 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Cripes, I was about to accuse you two of being stuck in the early 90's.....but then I'm stuck in the mid 80s, so I should shut up.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

she's good but she's no Moira Lambert.

iPodorZenor, Saturday, 29 May 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

and what about that "redhead chick from slowdive"?

chicho, Sunday, 30 May 2004 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

what about her?

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Sunday, 30 May 2004 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Definitive Pinefoxian territory indeed.

Of course she/they are remembered, though the Sundays ought to have been a persistent and indeed present band. I don't see that I would rate anything they've done as highly as Prefab Sprout's greatest two albums (J:TC and SMQ), the Blue Nile's "Hats", Aztec Camera's "High Land High Rain"... those are the peak of wistful, yet luxuriant 80s indie romanticism for me. They're still bloody good though (debut being the best, IMO), and Harriet does have a wonderful voice; delicately attractive too, one cannot deny.

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 30 May 2004 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

These are my top ten Sundays songs:

1. More
2. I Feel
3. I Kicked A Boy
4. Skin And Bones
5. Goodbye
6. Here's Where The Story Ends
7. Hideous Towns
8. Summertime
9. God Made Me
10. Joy

Hanna (Hanna), Monday, 31 May 2004 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I find "Reading Writing..." and "Blind" equally wonderful, and "Static & Silence" quite pleasant though it was a bit of a disappointment when it came out.

Hanna (Hanna), Monday, 31 May 2004 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

as the bloke says above - Rachel Goswell = much better, plus she's doing solo stuff soon too, which I may well go see

chris (chris), Monday, 31 May 2004 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, I wrote a letter to the NME and when they printed it, they changed "Harriet Wheeler" to "Charlotte Hatherley from Ash". Which just goes to show that a little translucent beauty goes a fuckin' long way these days.

John Allison (John Allison), Monday, 31 May 2004 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I'D HIT IT!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 31 May 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Rachel Goswell = much better

a much beter singer?

keith m (keithmcl), Monday, 31 May 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

better even

keith m (keithmcl), Monday, 31 May 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

another singer i have always preferred to harriet wheeler from about the same time: caroline crawley. shelleyan orphan were my fave band for a second in the early 90s. she sang also on this mortal coil's blood. on mr somewhere, syd barrett's late night and help me lift you up (mary margaret o'hara). has anyone an idea what happened to her?

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Monday, 31 May 2004 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Keith, she has less of a tendency to "go a bot Whitney" and warble all over the place, for me the worst ting a female singer could do, in terms of annoyingness, plus she's much prettier

chris (chris), Monday, 31 May 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

but rachel goswell mainly just whispers. i like her but she's no competition for harriet.

keith m (keithmcl), Monday, 31 May 2004 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

but harriet is married and rachel is not!

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Monday, 31 May 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

another good point

chris (chris), Monday, 31 May 2004 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Am I alone in finding this thread the most depressing I have ever read on ILX?

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 31 May 2004 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

INDIE NOSTALGIA

the male gaze element of this thread is just so ugh

a fan page on Facebook recently uploaded a photo of Wheeler (or a lookalike) taken in a supermarket and it just made me feel so uncomfortable, let them have their three perfect albums and a life of content withdrawal

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 29 November 2017 11:03 (eight years ago)

also this Lost Horizons singer doesn't sound like Wheeler at all? Expressive but she sounds more like a grittier Kate Bush than anything
