Both insufferably deritvative and guilty of trying WAY TOO HARD and being WAY TOO INESCAPABLE .

Who are worse?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 08:43 (twenty-two years ago)

where do you even hear these bands?

charltonlido (gareth), Saturday, 29 May 2004 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

From ground zero (Melbourne, Australia), I 'd have to say Jet are more inescapable at the moment. But the Vines are worse.

cnwb (cnwb), Saturday, 29 May 2004 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The Vines are at least not nasty little misogynist fuckfaces.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Saturday, 29 May 2004 08:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Sick OTM. Both shit, but Jet have cold, dead eyes.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 29 May 2004 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh hard choice.

I really can't stand The Vines, when I saw them a couple of years ago, everyone around me were going mad, really enjoying it, and I just thought it was a bunch of yelling. and Craig really annoys me. (oh and the Libertines supported them at that gig.. and I hated them too)

But at the moment Jet are annoying me as well.. that new single just rips off Lust for Life, riff and everything, but no one seems to have noticed it yet.

jellybean (jellybean), Saturday, 29 May 2004 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course we've notice that, jellybean. You just haven't noticed that we've noticed.

At least we're all in agreement that they BOTH suck.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

well the media round here don't seem to have (well I guess they do), and they're all raving about the single.. and if you REALLY want to listen to the single, you might as well listen to Iggy Pop instead.

or maybe Jet's record label are paying everyone in the media to stay quiet.. I need a job in the music press methinks

jellybean (jellybean), Saturday, 29 May 2004 09:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Thing is, jellybean, it's not so much "Lust For Life" as "Generic Garage Riff #6". It reminds me more of "Radar Love", I think.

Still, as long as we're all agreed it needs flushing, right?

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 29 May 2004 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Eh, vines had a few songs on their first album i liked ok (and the rest i could absolutely not remember). so i guess vines. but they still suck.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Jet are worse musically, but Craig Nicholls may be the biggest cunt in music.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 29 May 2004 10:08 (twenty-two years ago)

true, his obnoxiousness does outweigh the the anonymous dipshits in Jet.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i feel so negative now! i don't want to be like that.

shouldn't have chosen this thread to post to i guess.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The Cosmic Psychos atone for any Antipodean musical atrocities committed by either of the other two.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Saturday, 29 May 2004 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

my girlfriend loves them. ive dome round to the way of thinking that whats wrong with some big dumb copycat rock? its enjoyable as long as you approach their music in that context.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Saturday, 29 May 2004 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

You're obviously way more mature than I, Splooge (not a great feat, admittedly).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I was stuck at work a couple of weeks ago with no CDs, so I turned to the stash of MP3s on the network, which included the Jet album. I think that about half of it is passable, but it is outweighed by their general lameness and the fact that they fired their old bass player because he was ugly, or something.

That said, they are not as bad as that Vines idiot (at least the other bloke who they get to do the interviews seems capable of a coherent conversation). The happy ending to me buying their first album was, upon realising that it was shit, I sold it and made a $2 profit.

Hayden Nicholls (Pop the Weasel), Saturday, 29 May 2004 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

My take on the whole Vines Vs. Jet thing. Both have good bubblegum hits and shitty ballads. I'll pick the Vines in a clinch because they're more fun to look at.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 29 May 2004 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Craig Nicholls is just some poor dumb kid who's bought into the rawk star mythos. I kind of feel like calling his parents and asking them to put a stop to this, for their son's sake, whenever I read an interview with him. Jet, on the other hand, actually make points in their interviews, and what awful points they are: Rock & Roll should always be wild and rebellious (yawn), Rock is better than Pop, Dance and Hip-Hop, ppl who listen to The Strokes and then go to hear some DJ are turncoats, yadda yadda yadda. By the time that the lead guy gets to discussing his "way cool" Disco Sucks t-shirt, which he found out about through old footage of 70's rockists burning Disco records, the band becomes totally irredeemable (I realise this might all sound a bit "Patrin on Seger" here, but whaddyagonna do, with the choice around these days one should be allowed to be fickle.)

Also: The Vines are over anyway, Jet still have that obligatory second album thing coming up, so I don't think it's much of a contest, really, Jet are worse.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 29 May 2004 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I kind of feel about the Vines the way Mr. Burns felt about the Simpsons in "The Shinning." My sea monkeys have arrived! They work hard and they play hard!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 29 May 2004 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The Vines, for all their many faults, and they are MANY, don't seem to be trying too hard to be cool. I think they really are just a bunch of screechy kids with guitars.

Jet are vile twats who make the Strokes look like Television, while trying desperately to remain cool and edgy (lookit, we do coke! we have a song called "Cold Hard Bitch"!).

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 29 May 2004 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

if you cunce bought my records none of this would happen.

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Saturday, 29 May 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

vines are probably about to split up since patrick walked out of the band the other day and they've cancelled a stack of gigs..

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Saturday, 29 May 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

the vines: manufactured faux grunge bollox rawk for teenagers vs Jet retro rubbish basic bar boogie rawk

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 29 May 2004 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't mind when the jet song comes on the radio. i don't remember any vines songs.

keith m (keithmcl), Saturday, 29 May 2004 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The Vines, definitely. Jet are borderline evil, The Vines are just mildly irritating (with some good songs, granted).

Crackity (Crackity Jones), Saturday, 29 May 2004 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Even though I cannot abide the Vines, Jet are beneath contempt.

Ben Dot (1977), Saturday, 29 May 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh man, this is no contest. The Vines, for their bandwagon-jumping and tard singer, are pretty tolerable musically. Jet is as bad as Staind, possibly worse.

Sansai, Saturday, 29 May 2004 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Jet is as bad as Staind, possibly worse.

Hmmmm..gonna have to disagree with ya there. Staind simply aren't capable of doing anything catchy.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

both are excellent!

dave q, Saturday, 29 May 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Saboteur!

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 29 May 2004 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I am surprised by the antipathy towards Jet. Both their singles are infinitely preferable to the majority of the sludge clogging the rawk airwaves these days.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 29 May 2004 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Well Jet might be infinitely preferable if they were doing something more intersting, than just carbon copying music from one-two decades ago.

jellybean (jellybean), Saturday, 29 May 2004 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Jet is currently #1 on the Mainstream US Rock chart. Filling out the top ten are Velvet Revolver, Linkin Park, Shinedown, Hoobastank, Godsmack, Drowning Pool, Audioslave, Nickelback and Crossfade.

The only band on this list I prefer to Jet is Linkin Park, ironically enough because of "innovation."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 29 May 2004 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

otherwise I think a carbon copy of a joyful, danceable past is just what the doctor ordered.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 29 May 2004 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

God that list is terrible.

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 29 May 2004 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

tell me about it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 29 May 2004 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, Anthony...

Jet: see above.
Velvet Revolver: terrible name, terribly unambitious song writing. Linkin Park: terrible use of asian-looking fonts.
Shinedown: terrible reuse of Collective Soul song title
Hoobastank: terrible ability to make Incubus sound good.
Godsmack: terrible placement of star tattoo.
Drowning Pool: terrible.
Audioslave: see Velvet Revolver.
Nickelback: terrible facial hair.
Crossfade: terrible...wait are these guys from Sweden?

harshaw (jube), Saturday, 29 May 2004 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Jet better than rest of Mainstream US Rock Chart = Catshit more palatable than Dogshit.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 29 May 2004 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

he only band on this list I prefer to Jet is Linkin Park, ironically enough because of "innovation."

I know I started a thread today on ILE in an attempt to curtail my sharp-tongued, boorish behavior based on my own need to be a bit more respectful of people, but for this comment, you should be buried up to your nostrils in the dung of a thousand warthogs.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

since when did it become a crime to loath people who buy (nevermind listen) exclusively what mary kate and ashley tell them to?

harshaw (jube), Saturday, 29 May 2004 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahahahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Look out Alex, having a child can temper one's fire. I listen to Avril Lavigne songs over and over cos my 4 yr old puts them on repeat. I know the words now, and can only dream feverishly of the day she discovers Nickleback.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Saturday, 29 May 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I'll cross that treacherous chasm when I get to it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 29 May 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

On the positive side, Alex, you can mold their tastes a bit. Nestled in between Barbie Party Pool Mix and Saddle Club in her CD stack is Kraftwerk's 'Electric Cafe' which she also plays a fair bit. Also, she's Relaxed Muscle's biggest fan. Someone should tell Jarvis Cocker.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Saturday, 29 May 2004 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

But I am off topic. Ahem. People who never shut up about their kids eh?

I give it to Jet, for that one line:

You don't need no money
When you look like that do you honey?

Now, ain't that the truth.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Saturday, 29 May 2004 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Jet annoys me more, but in a Stalinist purge I'd probably take them both out.

James

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Sunday, 30 May 2004 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Vines. Nice harmonies sometimes.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Sunday, 30 May 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

The Vines win easily. They have at least three good songs in 'Get Free', 'Outtatheway' and 'Fuck the World'. They are probably one of the least shit bands that Nirvana has influenced. So what if Craig is a twat?

I saw Jet on Video Hits this morning and started scratching uncontrollably. I don't remember a band triggering such a reaction since Kula Shaker.

wombatX (wombatX), Sunday, 30 May 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i''ll tale Hi-God People for a hundred.

jack cole (jackcole), Sunday, 30 May 2004 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

anyways we have much worse local bands than jet and the vines. if anyone mentions streetkid vandal punch them as hard as you can

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Sunday, 30 May 2004 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Miccio, I'll agree that Jet is much better than nearly all of those bands you listed, but at the same time they piss me off so much more.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Sunday, 30 May 2004 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Nestled in between Barbie Party Pool Mix and Saddle Club in her CD stack is Kraftwerk's 'Electric Cafe' which she also plays a fair bit.

Oooh, that's weird. I was just playing Computer World at my two-month old this week (well, I was ripping it to my iTunes, and it's soothing mecchanik pulse bizarrely quieted her fussiness).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 30 May 2004 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Babies and cats love Kraftwerk.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Sunday, 30 May 2004 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

ok I just got the new Blender and SPIN last night and yes, Jet are indeed twats. Big, annoying, pathetic, deluded twats.

Both hits are still spiffy.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 30 May 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

"Hmmmm..gonna have to disagree with ya there. Staind simply aren't capable of doing anything catchy."

Yeah that was harsh. Actually, now that I look at the rest of that top ten... ugh. I never thought I'd say it, but of those Jet is probably the best, save for the verses to Linkin Park songs.

Sansai, Sunday, 30 May 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Akshully Anthony, I think you're prob'ly right in that if I heard the Jet singles without knowing anything about the band themselves I prob'ly wouldn't hate them with the deep, heartfelt loathing that rises to my craw, forcing me to choke back my gag reflex every time I do hear them.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 30 May 2004 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Jet lose, because if I hear that effin' song on the Vodafone commercial (which is it's own brand of tepid hell as it is) one more time, I'll commit an Elvis on my TV.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 30 May 2004 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I vote for sliverchair.

The Rebukes of Hazard (mjt), Monday, 31 May 2004 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

The Vines' song "Homesick" is pretty if you can block out the lyrics.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 31 May 2004 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Listen to Machine Translations or Hermitude instead

mentalist (mentalist), Monday, 31 May 2004 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

^^what he said (who are hermitude?)

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Monday, 31 May 2004 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure I would rather.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 31 May 2004 02:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I've come out the other side of hating Jet and now my awareness of their existence is uncoloured by emotion. "Look What You've Done" is interesting insofar as it reveals just how much they actually *are* Oasis Redux.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 31 May 2004 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Hermitude are from Sydney. I don't think they've made an impact anywhere else yet. They are two guys, one on decks, and one on an array of keyboards and stuff. They sort of play hip hop, electronic and downtempo stuff, mostly instrumental. Someone else can probably give a much better description. When I saw them they had a rapper (I think from The Herd) on a few tracks with the delicious name of Aussie Joe. They have releaed one album called Alleys To Valleys.

mentalist (mentalist), Monday, 31 May 2004 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"I vote for sliverchair"

but at least silverchair had the exscuse of being 15.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 31 May 2004 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

the herd mc name is ozi battler. which is an undeniably classic.

gallantseagull, Monday, 31 May 2004 05:11 (twenty-two years ago)

"Ozi Battla"

kit brash (kit brash), Monday, 31 May 2004 05:44 (twenty-two years ago)

and the cultural cringe kicks in like a nicotine rush

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Monday, 31 May 2004 05:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Chelo chelo

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 31 May 2004 05:51 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah ozi battla, sorry, my mind is like mush

mentalist (mentalist), Monday, 31 May 2004 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I vote for the Vines' 'Factory EP' on Rex Records and nothing else.

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Monday, 31 May 2004 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

haha "ppl who listen to The Strokes and then go to hear some DJ are turncoats"-jet in interview

wednesday night: dance to bassist from jet playing dj set in local club. thursday night: see same person from jet asleep on friends couch after hard nights clubbing/banging head on kitchen counter

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Monday, 31 May 2004 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The drummer from Jet picks his nose w/a drumstick during the horrible ballad (the new single) so I guess that puts them JUST above the Vines

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Monday, 31 May 2004 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
OTM
