CLASSIC ALBUMS DVD Series - Classic or Not Classic?

I love them,, especially when I'm a big fan of the album to begin with. Aja is my favorite - when they solo McDonald's harmonies on "Peg" - holy hell.

I've been half-heartedly seraching for the Classic Albums DVD of American Beauty by The Dead - anyone seen it?

I like how thse films are produced and shot, and while they gloss over some things and harp on others, generally, I think they're great, especially if you've had experience recording music / being in a studio.

I have the one for Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols and it's pretty illuminating. But, that's the only one I've seen, so I'd reel remiss in commenting on the series as a whole.

The ones on "Aja", "The Band", "Bollocks", "Elvis Presley", "Catch a Fire" and "Who's Next" were all very good. I'm diying to see the "Rumours" one, I don't think it's been shown over here (and I
don't do dvd).

LOVED the Aja one (tho why was Ian Dury interviewed? wtf?) (also I'm tired of hearing about how SD were "jazz AND pop" ooh wow, like no one else had ever done that). Haven't seen any of the others.

Metallica's ST has some cool features for a diehard Metallica fan, so I'll give it that. I mean, if you enjoy those kinda features, the interviews, making of, etc, they're great. BUT I haven't seen many that interested me. Admittedly, I'd like to see "The Band" one, but I'm sure it would pale in comparison to Last Waltz. I'd say its not classic BUT certainly, not a dud. Take 'em for what they're worth.

how far into production do these things go? are there any DVDs for pure nerds like me who almost want to be tracking engineers?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaron - you don't want to be an engineer. Trust me. It's a thankless, mundane job guaranteed to leave you wifeless, penniless and, worst of all, without a shred of love for the music you once adored. I could site several well known examples but I don't want to embarrass anyone.

That said, the Classic Albums series does get a bit nerdy, but in a good way - not too much jargon, but they will always solo certain tracks (usually vocals) and hearing Fleetwood Mac's accapella harmonies or the alternate guitar solos on "Peg" definitely make it worth your time.

hehe i said almost for a reason ;-). i really cant think of any band i would want to record.

...wifeless, penniless and, worst of all, without a shred of love for the music you once adored...
incidentally, working at a record store has the same effect on me, but i only make 6.50 an hour.

will the series expand or is the project over?

Classic! To date I've only seen two ("Rumours" and "Kiss Alive")
but I was very impressed. I'm interested in seeing 'em all, even ones profiling an album I care nothing about.
