their single makes me think of john mellencamp. take that how you will.

mason r. butler, Monday, 31 May 2004 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw their video on CMT a while ago, and stayed on that channel long enough to find out who they were. take that how you will.

Huck, Monday, 31 May 2004 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

They're driving "established" Nashville crazy (so much so that I can never get a ticket when they play around here).

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 31 May 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I've only heard "Wagon Wheel" but I think it's one of the best roots-country songs in a long time. One of the best songs I've heard this year.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 31 May 2004 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Me like.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Album's good for the first five or six tracks, then it tails off. I have no idea what the single is; "Wagon Wheel" was really dull, as I recall. Album's not as good as the one by Micah Blue Smalldone, much less, um, Big & Rich (who should REALLY be driving Nashville crazy), but I like it ok. Here's a show preview I wrote for this week's VOICE:

**PICK**
OLD CROW MEDICINE SHOW -- These five 1930-throwback Ithaca white hilbilly blues boys play "CC Rider" too dang slow (ain't they ever heard of Mitch Ryder?), and none of their best songs seem to be originals, but two of their debut's first four cuts concern cocaine, and one of those is an extremely fast-rocked talking blues owing as much to Charley Patton as Charlie Poole. The second song is an excellent Viet nam draft tale. The rest is gravy.

pssst...it's actually their third record, Chuck. The first two are better (especially the live one). If you need copies, I can oblige.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Do they do any good original songs on the other two albums? Because their own songs on the new album pretty much suck eggs. (Did they just put those two earlier ones out themselves? I had no idea, obviously. And yeah, I'd gladly hear them, if you wanna send me copies at the Voice address {36 Cooper Sq, ny ny 10003), Johnny. thanks!)

chuck, Tuesday, 1 June 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

"white hillbilly"?

el Huckle-huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

well yeah, white hillbilly minstrel string-band blues as opposed to black hillbilly string (or jug) band blues; Allen Brothers/Dock Boggs as opposed to Mississippi Shieks/Memphis Jug Band or whoever. (Seemed clear as muck to me.)

Excellent reference work number one:

chuck, Tuesday, 1 June 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

well, yeah, when you put it like that. But I think to most people these days, hillbilly = white.

el Huckle-huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Tell that to Cowboy Troy, Huckle Buck!!!

chuck, Tuesday, 1 June 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you ever spoken with Charley Pride, for that matter? I have. Although, I don't know if Mississippeans (if that's whatcha call 'em) count as hillbilly.
I'm not saying that all hillbillies are white, it's just that it's so rare that anyone talks about hillbillies who aren't white that the phrase stood out for me.

el Huckle-huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Kandia Crazy-Horse (a black woman) on her pazz and jop ballot two years ago:

RACE: REDNECK!

(As I recall, she voted for Montgomery Gentry, Travis Tritt, Kid Rock, and Drive By Truckers that year...)

chuck, Tuesday, 1 June 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

why does country people always like the kid rock?

el Huckle-huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Because he makes more entertaining albums than Old Crow Medicine Show, maybe? (Just a thought. Though country people also like lots of people who make WORSE albums than Old Crow Medicine Show, so my theory probably is wrong.)

chuck, Tuesday, 1 June 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

seven months pass...
do you think they'll make people finally go back and listen to new grass revival? i like this album though.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 3 January 2005 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a Gillian Welsh bbc concert on BBC4(Digital) last night. Where Old Crow Medicine Show came on and played the last track with her and David Rawlings.

Terry, Monday, 3 January 2005 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Haven't heard their records yet. They tore it up at the Newport Folk Festival, though. If you get a chance to see 'em, I say go.

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Monday, 3 January 2005 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...

1. They were really good at Bonnaroo.
2. They cute.
3. I'm interviewing them Monday.

roxymuzak, Thursday, 25 October 2007 01:02 (eighteen years ago)

Did not care for them the one time I saw them.

Hurting 2, Thursday, 25 October 2007 01:15 (eighteen years ago)

my sole experience with them consists of going to an art-frat house where a bunch of people linked arms and drunkenly sang along when "Wagon Wheel" came up on shuffle. on that evidence, more classic than dud, I guess.

bernard snowy, Thursday, 25 October 2007 02:41 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

I like Old Crow Medicine show. What are:

1. Some new groups playing music along similar lines?
2. Some old 20s/30s/40s/50s/60s groups that played similar music?

Reatards Unite, Sunday, 3 May 2009 14:12 (seventeen years ago)

Also, opening for Dave Matthews? What rotten luck.
