It's bad luck for rock critics to tour with bands

I was telling a friend about my theory that it's bad luck for rock critics to go on tour with bands, but suddenly the only famous example I can think of where bad things happened is when Lester Bangs went on tour with the Clash. Other examples? Or is the whole theory bogus?

that kid who toured with Stillwater, but I guess things worked out for him in the end.

Jim Greer wrote of his time with the Pixies when they opened for U2on the Zooropa tour. He was dating Kim Deal at the time. Dunno how long the relationship lasted, but the Dayton connection did allow him to join Guided By Voices.

see jason pettigrew's classic two-part revolting cocks tour diary in alternative press from the early 90s. better than bangs/clash.

They've been married for a few years now, actually!

It's kinda like embedded journalists travelling with troops. It become virtually impossible for them to stay objective.

Chuck Eddy / Beastie Boys to thread.

Cerberus Shoal stayed in my house when they played in Portsmouth, NH. We had a great time, but I'm not going to review any more of their albums - it's too fishy. Am I marking them up because I feel bad that we had no food in the house and Gillie's had stopped serving? Marking them down if they forget to return the Gang of Four CD I leant them for their tour? Plus, it's hard to hang out with people if they know you might critique them in the future.

Critics should just sulk at the back and not talk to anybody.

R.J. Smith/Replacements. Coincided (tho didn't lead to, I don't think) their signing with Sire. Whether the latter was a good or bad thing you decide etc.

Huckle, has that kid had another movie released?

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The Replacements were signed to Sire by Michael Hill, a rock critic turned A&R man. I think RJ was skeptical about that whole deal. Though they were critical faves, "the mats" created their own bad luck, wouldn't you say?

Touring with bands can be amazing, depending on the access you get and the band you tour with... Would always rather spend as much time as possible with a subject, than interview them for 20 minutes in the airless environs of a hotel.

(Hi Melissa!)

Bad luck to whom? The critic or the band?

Serious question.

Possibly Kate Again (kate), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Bad luck for both the critic and the band!

Melissa, you've tested the theory by now, no?
