What do you listen to?

Longtime, though lapsed ILXor returns, looking for recommendations on music that'd fit the criteria above. Mostly because I'm an old crusty who doesn't pay attention to what the kids listen to (though enough videos get past my eyes that the first person who says D12 gets a pie in the face.) Any and all suggestions would be welcome.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 31 May 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

regrettably limp bizkit *is* the culture.

notfazed (notfazed), Monday, 31 May 2004 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

No, this guy would hate the Bizkit kids, and probably the Slipknot kids as well.

Next?

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Monday, 31 May 2004 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Anti-Flag, Propaghandi, etc.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 31 May 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

But said kid might think Anti-Flag "sold out, man"

Tool.

astroblaster (astroblaster), Monday, 31 May 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

mike patton projects, anticon. you probably respect Dave Grohl and wear Clash shirts.

chaki_burger (chaki), Monday, 31 May 2004 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

'Or'. 'And' is asking a bit much at 16, I think.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 31 May 2004 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

here is my disgruntled friend who acts like a 16 yr old's favorite music list:

chaki_burger (chaki), Monday, 31 May 2004 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

"hate your culture" is the hard part.
cnn leads me to believe this kid is gonna convert to islam

if this were about 8 years ago itd be nine inch nails

astroblaster (astroblaster), Monday, 31 May 2004 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

oh we're talking about that guy

chaki_burger (chaki), Monday, 31 May 2004 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks very much Chaki.

Well, by "hate his culture" I mean that he'd think anything in the mainstream is for idiots. Strangely, the "convert to islam" line isn't too far off the mark, though he's more likely to wear a "Dylan Kleibold died for our sins" shirt...

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Monday, 31 May 2004 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

What do you listen to?

Sean Hannity.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Monday, 31 May 2004 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Any of:

Glassjaw, Bright Eyes, The Locust, Lightning Bolt, Cat Power, Neil Young, Dead Prez, Alec Empire.

Depending on background and access to broadband.

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I immediately thought Black Flag or the Misfits.

probably rebelious commercial hip hop and alternative

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

usher, lil john and evanesscence (sp)

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe yr all joking or something but he's looking for actual reccomendations, not a list of songs on the pop charts. I mean, if there are great songs on the pop charts to reccomend, fine (Usher, etc.) but why the fuck would you recommend Evenesence or Limp Bizkit?

djdee2005, Tuesday, 1 June 2004 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

djdee, read the question: i assume you are not familiar with anyone 16, westcoast, suburban, hate everyone etc.

if you are, my apologies, but i think you're a little out of your league here fella.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Um I know that's what teenagers often listen to but recommend something, you know, GOOD.

djdee2005, Tuesday, 1 June 2004 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

what's wrong with usher and evanesence?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 05:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Usher isn't goofy at least

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 05:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Usher is great.

What's GOOD about Evanesence?

djdee2005, Tuesday, 1 June 2004 05:36 (twenty-two years ago)

classical music

zzzz, Tuesday, 1 June 2004 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Bad Religion.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

how important is the 'guy' part of the q.? What would a 16 yr old GIRL who hates everyone, her culture etc. listen to?

Rush Rhees (Rush Rhees), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 08:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Relatively important, but not critical. I mean, jeez, I can look on the pop charts and see what would appeal to an anti-social teen these days. I was hoping for a list of stuff that'd be at least, interesting. The kid in question burned all his Evanesence albums when they hit MTV, okay?

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

HALL AND OATES

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"hate your culture"

erm, this is all just a bit stupid. all the bands you name are products of the culture.
so if you mean: choose from subcultural groups, then we need more information:
boy or girl?
gay or straight?
interested in books?
interested in drugs?
knows something about music already?

wait - i'm opting out of this dumb thread.

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

John Walker Lindh liked the Wu Tang Clan (oh no!!! their records charted top 40!!!).

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

It never ceases to amaze me how many people spend energy participating in dumb threads before announcing that it is indeed a dumb thread and their imminent departure.

Our boy is too hateful to really get into the Beasties, Nicole. And bonjour right back at ya.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Throbbing Gristle like the rest of 'em.
Or black metal.

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 1 June 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Boogie Down Productions/KRS-One

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Most of you don't give 16 year olds enough credit, or for some reason are thinking of 16 year olds from one or two decades ago.

Dan I., Tuesday, 1 June 2004 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

16 year olds listen to this.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just basing my obs. on what my 16 y.o. cousin listens to, so the people that said Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie are spot on. Also Modest Mouse.

Dan I, Tuesday, 1 June 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

But it's like, Limp Bizkit and stuff like that are so far off. I don't think most 16 year olds today know who they are/were. Things move fast you old ass people!

Dan I., Tuesday, 1 June 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

and didn't Evanesence break up several months ago? This is the kind of thing I'm talking about.

Dan I., Tuesday, 1 June 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

a rebellious 16 year old who just got his drivers license told me he likes to drive and roll the windows down and blast evanescense! i will tell him he's way out of the loop next time i see him. my apologies.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, he totally is out of the loop. Tell him he sucks at being 16.

Dan I., Tuesday, 1 June 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

My entire reasoning is that if you hate America, you would probably enjoy listening to music that gets great joys in pointing out the egregious flaws in American culture, ie BDP/KRS-One. Generalizing what a "stereoypical" sixteen-year-old in 2004 would actually deign to listen to strikes me as being about as useful as tossing cats at the elderly.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

OMG tossing cats at the elderly!!! think of the utility! I am going to make a million dollars off this idea, thank you Dan!

Dan I., Tuesday, 1 June 2004 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

(blast)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

My cousin is a fluke though, since he lives in soulless Phoenix. If he lived almost anywhere in California or the upper east coast or Chicago or something I'm sure he'd have long ago succumbed to that vice of teens everywhere HORRID SCENESTERISM! A hundred local bands that are better than any other bands anywhere, tons of split singles in his room, etc. excuse me I'm going to be sick.

Teenagers suck.

Dan I., Tuesday, 1 June 2004 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Or worse he could live somewhere like Minneapolis where there's enough bands to indulge in jack-off scenesterism but they ALL SUCK ALL SUCK ALL SUCK.

Dan I., Tuesday, 1 June 2004 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahahaha. My 16 year old self took the Anglo but not goth or flannelpunk/sXe route.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i think Alec Empire was spot on

don (don), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, I'm just looking for places to start so that I can flesh out a fictional 16-year old hates everything but himself and his little posse. There's no pretense at an ethnographic survey; just getting names to search out and give a listen to because I don't know where to start myself (not knowing any 16-year old sociopaths). No correct answer here, just mining for information is all.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, right. Sabbath. (Alternately, anything Wino's ever done.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

The Blood Brothers.

Simon H., Wednesday, 2 June 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

My personal response to this was to listen to pretty much anything that came from Europe, regardless of genre (and with a heavy emphasis on the UK).

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm a lurker and i pretty much fall into all these categories, although hating everything was more 13/14. my tastes are probably a lot closer to the average ILMer than the average teenager, but among my friends i'd second the postal service, death cab, modest mouse, cat power, the blood brothers and add pj harvey, sonic youth, the pixies, etc. i see a lot of clash, ramones, and misfits t-shirts around too.

and honestly, i can't think of a single person in my grade who still likes limp bizkit or slipknot.

marissa, Wednesday, 2 June 2004 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Some combo of Brit-pop and mid-nineties Matador indie rock.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

if yr actually hate your culture and youre hardcore youll listen to southern rap. fuck you1

Peter $$, Wednesday, 2 June 2004 06:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Another lurker, 17, California, rather suburban. Other people might describe me as "hates everyone and hates my culture". I like Saint Etienne, The Beach Boys and Fleetwood Mac.

But the answer you are looking for is really chaki's list, which is pretty accurate for what you want.

Matt, I would suggest searching livejournal for these type of people. One or two or a billion of them have blogs.

IndianaJones, Wednesday, 2 June 2004 07:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh. Now that's an idea Mr. Jones. Why didn't I think of that?

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Andy Greenblatt's book 'Nothing feels good - teenagers, punk rock and emo' does a good job of describing all the different threads and mutations from hardcore to emo, and what that's supposed to mean over the years, including many field trips and interviews with actual teenagers etc., as well as chapters on many of the bands involved. quite an engaging and eye-opening read IMO
