Jonathan Richman at Bowery 6/10...and Adam Sandler

Watching a Jonathan Richman show tonight at the Bowery Ballroom, I realized (maybe I'm way late on this one) that Adam Sandler owes Richman royalties or something. Has anyone noticed that Sandler's schitck has got to be taken from Richman's . . . schtick?

...by which I mean the man-child speech patterns, 14 year old boy thing.

And I don't mean to insult either of them as they're both good at what they do.

I just saw Jonathan the night before. I don't know whether the comparison fits, it's kind of hard to tell how much of what he does is a put on and how much is just him being himself, but I think his boyish earnestness is more or less sincere.

The first time I saw JR was back in 1984, on the campus of the university of Michigan. We were waiting outside the auditorium prior to the show, when a Greyhound bus stopped in front and the manchild himself got off, holding a guitar and backpack.

The opening act for that show was a children's party magician. At the end of each trick, there'd be this one person, enthusiastically chapping and hooting at the back of the auditorium, almost seeming over the top....until we saw him perform!

I'd say it's a sincere put on. In person, not around fans, he's pretty serious and into talking about ideas and things he's reading.

Great story pee pee.

I saw him about 10 yrs ago and it felt like he was staring right at us his whole set. We went up to talk to him afterwards and he was sorta aloof, but not in a rude way.
But go see him. He puts on a very good show, and has nice songs.
I think I see what you're getting at with the Adam Sandler, but I think you're wrong. I think Sandler probably owes more to someone like Jonathan Winters.

sincere put on
I like this concept. Isn't this the essence of Jewish comedy?

no, no, you're thinking of schvitzing.

It's hot enough today.
