Some ragtime and boogie woogie; New Orleans Marching Bands

The dance craze first took off in the 1910s (foxtrots etc.), but I'm not sure if I've heard examples from this period, more likely it's '20s stuff that I've heard.

I haven't really heard enough music from this period to have favourites but I do have a strong interest in early sound recordings. I think there is something deeply moving about hearing the voices of people from so long ago. I don't know if you listened to John Peel during 1999, but over a period of months he played 4 tracks each from every year of the 20th century. The period 1900-1919 particularly interested me because the records were so unfamiliar. My favourites were the English music-hall songs. You can find the tracklistings at www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/alt/peel.shtml. Once you're on that page click on the "Peelenium" link. Another site worth looking at is the Secret Museum of Mankind ( www.secretmuseum.net). This site features early recordings from all around the world.
