You Am I: S/D

I was just reading the "bands you've forgotten" thread and someone mentioned You Am I. I remember their CD was one of those ones that was released on a major label, but you could buy it for 1 or two bucks at the Princeton record exchange, and they had hundreds of copies. Anyway, I never did, maybe cuz the album looked so wannabe-cool, but reading the AMG it sounds like it might be kind of interesting power-pop rock maybe like Sloan or something? Is any of there stuff decent?

There's like, one good song per album, and the good song's not even that good. Incidentally, I think there was a thread somewhere else on there that discussed it fully.

For some reason, I'm thinking the album your talking about is #4 Record. I see it in used bins a lot. I used to own it. That's the only one I've heard, but if it's representative I'm not too interested in pursuing more. It's not horrible, but it's your typical sensitive guy pop/rock. They sound like a bar band with an average ear for average pop melody. Most any article on them will reference The Replacements at one point or another.

I've said it before: The occasional pretty-good tune in amongst a never-ending parade of mediocre ones which are inexplicably overrated by far too many people.

The following songs are decent: Tuesday, What I don't know about you, Soldiers. Everything else pre-1996 is terrible. Everything after 1996 is merely ordinary.

nine years pass...

A jeez - these guys were great in Chicago last night - 3/4 filled Schubas, but that didn't matter - they more than delivered an awesome rock show. Some people (foolishly) call 'em washed up or not America-ready or some other such crap. And yes - they're light years better than Sloan (who kinda 'phoned it in' last time I saw 'em - kinda of sick of their 'preciousness' and the over-rating they get).

Love their first 4 or 5 albums, along with the Tim Rogers solo album. But I lost interest around "Dress Me Slowly" - it just didn't sound as fresh or compelling.

two years pass...

Their first 3 albums have been reissued in AU with a bonus disc chock full of everything you'd want: b-sides, live cuts and unreleased acoustic versions. Very comprehensive!
