Solo album songs that would've been much better (or worse) if the 'mother band' had done them

Where you feel the bandmates would/not have brought that something extra needed to turn a track from good to sublime.

For example:

Would The Fab Four have done better versions of "Mind Games" or "Band on the Run" or "My Sweet Lord" or "It Don't Come Easy"?

Gabriel-era Genesis doing "In the Air Tonight"?

KISS doing "New York Groove" or "Ozone"?

there's no improving "new york groove"! are you crazy?

I guess this is the thread for people in good bands who went on to have crappy solo careers.
Oodles of artist must fit that bill, although only Richard Ashcroft is coming to my mind right now.

Yeah, it's called "Charlie's Girl" by Lou Reed.

i would have liked to have seen new order do 'tasty fish' and 'seven reasons'

the surface noise and the analogue warmth (electricsound), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

not enough examples to start a new thread, but I was always fascinated that Aerosmith re-did Joe Perry's solo "Let the Music Do the Talking" on their re-group record "Done With Mirrors" and wondered if any other group ever did that.

(Both are awful.)

Ah, if only Tim Machine had done "Ziggy Stardust".

"Would The Fab Four have done better versions of 'Mind Games' or 'Band on the Run' or 'My Sweet Lord' or 'It Don't Come Easy'?"

"Mind Games" - Hell, yes.
"Band on the Run" - Hard to say.
"My Sweet Lord" - Hard to say. Seemingly wouldn't have been Spector producing it, so it would have been a whole different approach.
"It Don't Come Easy" - With Paul on bass? Probably.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Wire would have done a great job with "A-Z," but it's hard to imagine it being much better.

briania (briania), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Joe Strummer's Walker couldn't have gotten any better with the Clash playing (everything else from This Is England on though yeah)

kit brash (kit brash), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Some of Zappa's 70s albums might actually have been amusing if the original Mothers had played on them plus it would have been funny listening to Jimmy Carl Black et al trying and failing to play all that hyper-complicated shit

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Trying to imagine Hawks and Doves or On the Beach played entirely by Crazy Horse and cringing.

Now what if we flip it Keith Richards had done the Rolling Stones 90's albums solo? Better, no?
