I'm hoping this will all turn out for the best. This was one of my favorite bands back in high school, they sort of turned me on to all sorts of wonderful music and when Joey passed it killed me, when Dee Dee passed it killed me.

Any good Johnny stories to share?

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, just saw the link on Yahoo: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=638&ncid=579&e=3&u=/nm/20040616/en_nm/people_ramones_dc

This is really, really awful.

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I know from family experience that prostate cancer's a horrid thing and a half. Sounds like he was just caught too late. Memo to all males -- get yerself regularly checked when you hit 40 and after.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

joey, then dee-dee, now johnny ...

a friend of a friend who interviewed johnny sometime in the early 80s claims that he was really nice and down-to-earth.

i really hope he pulls through or, barring that, that he can go w/ some dignity and peace.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Ramones, famed for playing their high-energy, unpolished songs at breakneck speed, rose to fame in New York City in 1974, paving the way for such British punk rock icons as the Sex Pistols and the Clash"

1974?

Sasha (sgh), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

yes?

chris andrews (fraew), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

They were indeed playing in 1974.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

They were saying in 1996 that it was their retirement tour, and I thought "yeah, sure". Now I feel really foolish for having never seen them. But of course I feel for Johnny, his friends, and his family first and foremost.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not gonna start eulogizing the guy prematurely, but I'm very sad to hear it. He is one of the greatest living guitar players.

spittle (spittle), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 05:17 (twenty-two years ago)

weird. He was just on a radio program in LA two weeks ago.

MerkinMuffley (MerkinMuffley), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the deal with all the ramones dropping like flies? :-(

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 05:45 (twenty-two years ago)

the surgeon general just announced that 8th notes are carcinogenic

MerkinMuffley (MerkinMuffley), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Despite his politics, and his not rocking quite as hard as Dee Dee, I'd still love to see him pull it off and fight this.

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 05:53 (twenty-two years ago)

This really sucks.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

AW, MAAAAN...

Now this is just incredibly depressing. To this day, still my favorite guitar player of all time. Guess the punk lifestyle really ain't glamorous in the least.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Kinda makes me think twice about attempting to become a musician.

Fr4ncis W4tlington (Francis Watlington), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

This is bad. There have been so many great musicians of that era that died in the past few years, it is very sad.

earlnash, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Very, very, very sad.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

it's weird that by and large the hippies are outlasting the punks.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Exactly. David Fuckin' Crosby is still waddling around and Johnny Ramone's on his deathbed? Fuck the world.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Of only all the punx on FAT WRECK CHORDS / EPITAPH would die instead!

0r4l R0b3rt5 (ex machina), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Crosby won a game of chess with Death at some point.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

johnny stories? how about this: i was told that the kkk took my baby away was written in response to the very right-wing johnny stealing joey's girlfriend.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, that's true ... according to "on the road with the ramones" by their long-time tour manager monte melnick, johnny carried around a KKK membership card as a "joke" & made racist comments all time though friends say he just liked to shock people ... he did end up marrying joey's girlfriend

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

And he and Joey didn't speak for years after that, right?

spittle (spittle), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"I think Crosby won a game of chess with Death at some point. "

He probably just snorted or ate the reaper, thus winning the match.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder if the hippies/punks longevity issue has anything to do with hippies tending to be more laid back and punks tending to be more intense and angry. Stress is a killer, so the doctors say. Maybe we should all smoke lots of pot and grow our hair real long and not bathe enough.

Davlo (Davlo), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

we should all smoke lots of pot and grow our hair real long and not bathe enough

but joey did all that & still croaked

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

OOooohhhhhhhhh......Fritz sadly otm.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

(i didn't mean that to sound flippant, i miss poor ol' joey)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

the more their "group image" gets tarnished, the more I think all my favorite things about the Ramones came strictly from Joey.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard they had a stylist who suggested that they all wear tennis shoes, ripped jeans and leather jackets, and they were like "nah, we'll look stupid". Can anyone confirm or dispel this?

Johnny Ramone Is Not Dying, His Doctor Says

Johnny Ramone is not dying, according to his doctor.
The Ramones guitarist, who has been living with prostate cancer for the past several years, was recently admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles with what his physician, Dr. David Agus, told MTV News was a "complication from the cancer. But he got through it, and he's now on a new, experimental therapy. He's fighting courageously, and I think he will be going home in the near term."
Johnny's admission to Cedars-Sinai set off a nationwide — maybe worldwide — media death watch. He was said to be in an intensive-care unit, and very near the end. Characteristically, the 55-year-old guitarist, a stubbornly private man, refused to issue a corrective press statement. His wife, Linda, however, was appalled by the funereal headlines, and authorized Dr. Agus to explain Johnny's condition.
"He's not dying," Linda said on Wednesday afternoon (June 16). "He was okay for years, and he's fine now. He's in the hospital, but he's not in ICU. And I think he may be leaving by tomorrow."

Johnny Ramone Is Not Dying

That's just a great phrase on its own.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 June 2004 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"The more I think all my favorite things about the Ramones came strictly from Joey."

Dee Dee was kind of the songwriting genius in the group, though, no?

Tim Ellison, Thursday, 17 June 2004 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Is "genius" really the word you're looking for there?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 June 2004 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Johnny Ramone Is Not Dying

that's almost as good as "space rock caused great dying"! (hawkwind jokes begin.......

...now.)

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 17 June 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Great news about Johnny, and...Dee Dee was King.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 17 June 2004 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

"Is 'genius' really the word you're looking for there?"

In all actuality, maybe so. I think Dee Dee wrote a lot of the stuff, including a lot of the lyrics. There was a hell of a lot of inspiration there, carried over a lot of songs.
