Does anybody here still read Circus Magazine?

Did you read it in the 80s or 90s?

Oh yeah. It's still there.

Right now, I'm looking at the cover of the July 2004 issue.

A cover story on Korn, plus stories on Slipknot, Godsmack, Incubus, A Perfect Circle, The Darkness, Fear Factory and Black Sabbath.

And the publisher and editor-in-chief of Circus has been the same since it's inception in 1968 -- Gerald Rothberg.

I think the only other two longrunning rock mags that still exist today that have published longer than Circus are Rolling Stone (1967) and Hit Parader ( I have no idea how long they have been around but it's been forever)

1942, IIRC.

Err...I have issues from the 70s.

Hit Parader was as badly written a magazine as there's ever been. It was as if all the articles were just transcribed band bios. At least Circus had marginally better articles. Plus, their concert pics kicked ass.

The first copy of Hit Parader I got in 1984 had a tiny paragraph about a new band called Slayer, I bought the Haunting the Chapel EP shortly thereafter, and my 14 year-old world was changed. That's the one good thing that lousy mag did for me.

And yeah, Rip was good, but nothing compared to Metallion, the Canadian bimonthly from the mid-80s. Used to pick it up at the old A & A Records chain...they were one of the first metal magazines to put Metallica on the cover, and they had terrific, often funny, concert and album reviews.

The newer equivalent of Circus:

I've heard that's pretty much what they were, but in its defense the magazine was basically put together by one person!
