pitchfork sells more records than anybody!

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 18 June 2004 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

One guy on ancient keys, another on guitar + vocals.
Sounds like 1983 New Order (more so than on record).

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 18 June 2004 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 4 February 2005 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

kinda weird they're skipping california...

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 4 February 2005 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

was it in California that Manitoba got served with the court/ legal summons?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 4 February 2005 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, they're playing Kingston and Hamilton, but not Toronto and Montreal!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 4 February 2005 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I got the info from Caribou's booking agency, so it's possible that Junior Boys are playing shows without Caribou on off days.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 4 February 2005 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought Junior Boys live was pretty boring, even though I love Last Exit. Could have just been that I was spaced out -- they were almost done with their set before I realized it was them.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 4 February 2005 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Grain of salt

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 4 February 2005 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

(Actually, though, I was a bit disappointed, too, but I chalk that up to the venue's poor acoustics.)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 4 February 2005 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a big time gap before the Northwest shows, so I'm guessing those are all California Junior Boys shows sans Caribou.

donut christ (donut), Friday, 4 February 2005 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

was it in California that Manitoba got served with the court/ legal summons?

-- DJ Martian (altmartinu...), February 4th, 2005.

think it was nyc

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 4 February 2005 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

nothing in NYC?!

rm265, Friday, 4 February 2005 04:58 (twenty-one years ago)

ITHACA?????

wtf, while I was there all we had was fucking blue traveler and god street wine and motherfucking RUSTED ROOT, who were and shall remain the worst band ever.

fuck you, Ithaca. and fuck you Plastic Nebr@$ka, Ithaca's most popular band (Dead cover band). goddammit.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 4 February 2005 05:04 (twenty-one years ago)

a review i did of there show in san diego:

http://www.explodingplastic.com/features/oct8livereview.html

twelve, Friday, 4 February 2005 05:56 (twenty-one years ago)

nothing in NYC?!

Note the time gap between MA and NC in the dates. Again, these are either unconfirmed shows in the works, or Caribou-less shows.

donut christ (donut), Friday, 4 February 2005 06:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i caught the show in toronto with ratatat and mouse on mars. the junior boys just bored the hell out of me so much i couldn't stop talking about how irritated i was. lo and behold their manager is standing at the bar right behind me, and he's telling me 'yeah, i think they might need some live drums'. i'm not sure how well that would work out, but god do they need something, i don't care how good they are on record.

aaron ef, Friday, 4 February 2005 08:43 (twenty-one years ago)

aaron, if the junior boys "rock" next time, I now know whose house to egg!

donut christ (donut), Friday, 4 February 2005 09:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh, aaron, I described that gig as possibly the dullest set I've ever seen.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 4 February 2005 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

> lo and behold their manager is standing at the bar right behind me, and he's telling me 'yeah, i think they might need some live drums'

the junior boys' manager is a female. fact.

rumour dispeller, Friday, 4 February 2005 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, they're playing Kingston and Hamilton, but not Toronto and Montreal!

Montreal - April 29
CARIBOU (Manitoba)
JUNIOR BOYS
THE RUSSIAN FUTURISTS

alex in montreal, Friday, 4 February 2005 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm, that's not on the Windish site.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 4 February 2005 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

It's on the promoter's site (www.blueskiesturnblack.com)

alex in montreal, Friday, 4 February 2005 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Junior Boys live is, indeed, pretty dull. The singer looks like a college frat-boy with an acoustic guitar around his neck, while the guy on the keys just twists knobs in a fairly classic manner. I eventually walked out and returned 30 minutes later to see Mouse on Mars, which was better.

Jena (JenaP), Friday, 4 February 2005 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't really relate to any of the above comments. Yeah, they could use a little more of a stage presence (or possibly louder volume and a more mysterious one!) and I think it was a little too early/awkward in the evening for anyone to actually dance, but I've seen much more boring. That and I don't get the frat boy thing at all, unless it's some new frat boy trend to have a beard and wear sweaters. I also implicitly distrust Jena since I believe it was JBs->Ratatat->MoM at all the gigs, meaning a thirty minute break would mean coming back in the middle of Ratatat's set.

I was also really sad that all the "fasionable" indie girls were apparently only there to try to be Ratatat groupies. Yuck.

mike h. (mike h.), Friday, 4 February 2005 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I also wish that people would realize that stopping in Chicago and Detroit don't make for a very thorough midwestern tour. This might just be because the rest of the midwest is lame and can't fill shows, which I might admit.

mike h. (mike h.), Friday, 4 February 2005 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

three months pass...
loved the junior boys' set in new york tonight, way more than expected. i adore the album, just thought they'd be underwhelming live. but the new songs were really enjoyable (guitar was very 'unforgettable fire' on one of them) and the old ones all worked well. i didn't mind the preprogrammed beats too much, the live bass/guitar made up for it.

maybe my expectations had just been really beaten down, or maybe i was just psyched to finally catch em.

rajeev (rajeev), Thursday, 5 May 2005 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

They were awesome last night. I can't wait for the next album b/c the new shit was completely killer. they're way more danceable these days than when i first saw them.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Thursday, 12 May 2005 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

that's great news. jeremy was exhorting everyone to dance when they played here a few months ago, and i was definitely among the few that did, but i also remember thinking, hmmmm, this isn't all that dancey.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 12 May 2005 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Saw them again opening for Caribou and it was a bit better. Still, call me a boring old rockist, but I don't exactly get the idea of live music with so much pre-programmed stuff unless it goes theatrical in some way. Press up some vinyl instrumentals and do a DJ set with live vocals and you'll get more people dancing.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 12 May 2005 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

That's right, jaymc. I saw them last month, and thought they were good, and one of the things that kept them from being betterthangood was the begging and chiding with regards to the dancing issue. It isn't really dance music.

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 12 May 2005 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

peepee, did they play a CJAM event, like the Jammies maybe, or did i dream that?

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 12 May 2005 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

He should be exhorting people to CHILL.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 12 May 2005 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Junior Boys = GREAT
Russian Futurists = VERY GOOD
Caribou = 10 TONS OF SUCK

Kyle/Fetchboy karaoke-ing U2 and Nine Inch Nails = ULTRA ULTRA CLASSIC

adam (adam), Thursday, 12 May 2005 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Only dance-related comment I heard was a "Do you guys want to dance?" or "like to dance" or something of that nature. The show was pretty empty due to the corny indie fuxxor population all hitting up the Decemberists show. People in NO = very stupid.

adam (adam), Thursday, 12 May 2005 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

does NO = New Orleans?

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 12 May 2005 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah

Fetchboy (Felcher), Thursday, 12 May 2005 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

and also Adam, your lalala's on "can't get you outta my head" were astounding.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Thursday, 12 May 2005 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I had to get something right. I lose at karaoke.

Anyway, about the Junior Boys -- normally the film-student crap projected behind the band really pisses me off (gybe, sonic youth, etc) but it really seemed to gel with the music. Maybe that's the innumberable Millers High Life and Dixies talking.

adam (adam), Thursday, 12 May 2005 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Ken, twas a Jammies event, but you still may have dreamt it.

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 12 May 2005 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

how long was the Jbz set? last time i saw them they only got to play five songs....so i am hoping for a bit longer set this time out.

william (william), Thursday, 12 May 2005 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

6 songs? Maybe 7? Too short.

adam (adam), Thursday, 12 May 2005 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

peepee-- ah, okay... i must've read about it somewhere.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 12 May 2005 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

(xpost) jaymc, i must've been dancing right next to you at that jbeez chicago show. i loved how there was this small little group dancing and the rest of the peeps just rubbing their chins behind. bless chicago. hopefully the empty bottle will work out better (mebbe more intimate?) than logan's square.

natedey (ndeyoung), Friday, 13 May 2005 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

heh. yes. i hope so, too. logan sq. auditorium is kind of a weird venue.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 13 May 2005 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't have a beard anymore, adam! do keep up.

My favorite part of that picture is that there is a pineapple next to Nick's head.

Well...yes, that is pretty inspired.

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 05:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anyone have that mix CD mentioned upthread??? Nubirth - "Anytime" is one of my all time favorite tracks!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 05:42 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha!

This becoming, like, the ultimate ILM thread!

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 05:42 (twenty-one years ago)

No! I didn't see any mix CDs at the merch table.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 05:43 (twenty-one years ago)

rett bratner (deangulberry), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 05:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Have any of you gentlemen heard the JBs remix of Billie Holiday's yesterday, perchance?

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 05:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I've heard it. It's good but not amazing.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 05:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I wanna know if Nate DeY0ung was at the show tonight! I forgot to ask. Or djdee? But he probably would've posted by now if he was.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 05:52 (twenty-one years ago)

a good band.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 06:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Saw them on Monday, great show. New material, better stage presence, more bells and whistles that I didn't really need (video) but were pretty cool. Did the Russian Futurists make it to the Chicago date? Apparently they couldn't make it into the country the other day. They were out of the mix cd mentioned upthread when they went through Des Moines, so I missed out..

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Nope, I don't think the Futurists are expected until Cleveland.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone going to see then tomorrow at The Luminaire, London??

Anyone want spare ticket?

ANYONE??? I HAVE SPARE TICKET - NEED TO GET RID OF. thanks

Tannenbaum Schmidt (Nik), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 21:02 (nineteen years ago)

six months pass...
Should I go see them tonight?

baaderonixx, Monday, 26 February 2007 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

YES

lex pretend, Monday, 26 February 2007 13:52 (nineteen years ago)

The show in London at Dingwalls last week was dead good, despite technical difficulties. Bonde do Rolle were fun as well.

Neil S, Monday, 26 February 2007 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

yeah it was great - sound a bit muddy though, and i really really hate dingwalls.

lex pretend, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

Is there a supporting act? Right now the thing I wanna do is to go to bed, so I wouldn't mind if it finished early...

baaderonixx, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

There were three support acts in London ...

I was at Dingwalls too, never having seen them before. I emailed a mate about it, which I'll just copy here:

"It was good but odd. I don't know how you imagined him, but I thought he would be thin and in his late 20s. He was portly and in his early 30s. There were lots of technical problems and so when he was talking to the crowd rather than singing this came across too much. Rather spoilt the mystique. When they got going this was less of a problem. He has a lovely voice and it kind of transforms him when he sings.

It actually worked really well live. There was him singing and playing guitar or bass (doing some of the bass bits that are electronic on the records), a keyboards/electronics/laptop guy and a drummer, who was doing lots of accents and hi-hat patterns and stuff, although the main beats were still electronic. But somehow the fact they were clearly a really good tight band in control of the material also detracted from the mystique. It was interesting, as you could see what was making each noise (this made me think of the New Order video to Perfect Kiss), but perhaps I wanted something more futuristic and seamless."

Bondo do Rolle WERE good!

I like Dingwalls, as well. But the crowd were a bit shit.

Jamie T Smith, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:25 (nineteen years ago)

the crowd at junior boys gigs in ldn are always like that, it was just as bad at the luminaire (though i enjoyed that gig better - not on the verge of a cold, good venue, better sound, got drunk and headed to the front with a friend to rave to 'under the sun' at the end).

i'd totally imagined jeremy as a skinny wimpy indie boy, it was a bit like WOAH when i first saw him (portly, ginger, bearded, slightly ungainly, sweaty), but you're right, his voice does transform him.

lex pretend, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

Just noticed yesterday they were gonna play my town on the 24th! FUUUUCK

nathalie, Monday, 26 February 2007 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

I was at Dingwalls the other day too - worst gig venue in London? Discuss...

Kaliova, Monday, 26 February 2007 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

ten years pass...

anyone seen them recently? i'm thinking about going next Friday Night and wondering if it's worth it?

Bee OK, Thursday, 22 June 2017 00:45 (eight years ago)

show is at 10 PM until 3 AM. sounds like a club, which is fine by me.

Bee OK, Thursday, 22 June 2017 00:45 (eight years ago)

they were fine last september. played songs from all their albums. i don't remember that much, but if you're a fan they're definitely worth seeing.
