Jeanne Fury just sent me this link; not sure if there's been any actual rumbles yet, though....

In Detroit, the riff rift goes way back. You found it in the '60s, with the glaring dichotomy between the derelict Stooges and the straight-arrow Bob Seger

heh. except that both are actually Ann Arbor bands. I think that Bob Seger & Iggy Pop both graduated from Pioneer High the same year(1965?).

also, one of the bands they cite, the Kingsnakes, really _suck_ live. I've had to run sound for some of them. post-grunge guys who just want to get on that modern rock radio anyway they can.

also Seger is on the third MC5 LP.

then again, i take this personally, as my friends are involved, and I have to deal with "both" kinds of bands in my function as deputy sound guy.

this is like false dichotomy of Momusian proportions.

indeed. the article fails to mention that the current Harleyfest headliners, Clutch, has played the Magic Stick(site of the "hipper" fest) several times, and that the Harleyfest headliner two years ago was a band that either even would kill for: CHEAP TRICK.

How do those Michiganian noise fellows fit in here?

Thor Horseman, Friday, 18 June 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

into the "hipster" ranks, natch

for Detroiters, easily summed up as Metrotimes vs. Jam Rag

Ahhh Jam Rag. My friends and I would pick issues up and laugh endlessly.

I was thinking about going to the Rock City thing tommorow, but realized there aren't really any bands playing there I want to see, save for the Dirt Bombs.

The idea that having a working class background makes your band better isn't a good one.

I read the article at my uncle's yesterday. It's stupid, really. Like Easy Action (who are closer to hardcore), Audra Kubat (who is closer to Joni Mitchell), Human Eye (who are closer to Hawkwind crossed with the Misfits), and Esquire (who does a fun 60's-influenced rap thing) are really garage rock. Not quite. And I'm sure there are plenty of bands on both bills who like Iggy and the Stooges.

I'm going both days, and really looking forward to it.
