Pedro the Lion. S & D.

Couldn't find a thread about David Bazan. I just discovered him tonight on the radio. To me occasionally his music sounds very much like Idaho. Whose first album Year after Year is still one of my all-time faves. Beautifully sad slowcore which creates an amazingly dense comforting atmosphere. The power which can come out of depression. Some of the mp3s I listened to were more in the vein of Elliott Smith but less vulnerable and musically more convincing. Where to start with Pedro?

The new Pedro album (_Achilles Heel_) is a fine place to start, especially from what you're saying, Alex. The 2 albums prior to that (_Winners Never Quit_, _Control_) are more RAWK, and, in the case of _Control_, somewhat didactic.

But the guy on the radio played this one song from the new album which really made me think, is Idaho back? And then he said the rest of the album is really shitty. Almost mainstream in the vein of Coldplay.

all of pedro the lion's good stuff sounds just like idaho. but idaho are more interesting.

Was thinking of seeing them at Northsix, more for John Vanderslice.

The new one's good. "it's hard to find a friend" and "winners never quit" are great too. Control got a little tedious, but is great in small doses (i.e. one song at a time, shuffled in itunes). And I have huge respect for him for being a vocal progressive christian, and thus risking the disdain of both the cynical indie-rock scene and the annoying CCM scene.

Some of it's maybe a little didactic, but in a humanistic, Woody Guthrie sort of way.

On the whole, PTL are more pop than Idaho. The comparison maybe made more sense back when the songs were slower.

John Vanderslice is a ridiculously kind man.

Phoenix is out and so i threw it on. only got through a few tracks on my way home, will listen to more later. one thing is did notice is his voice seems to be a lot different, probably from smoking? the sound threw me for a bit of a loop.

Bee OK, Thursday, 24 January 2019 01:33 (seven years ago)

i think i might still stand by this:

1. Control
2. Whole E.P.
3. The Only Reason I Feel Secure E.P.
4. It's Hard To Find A Friend
5. Winner's Never Quit

Achilles Heel was horrid and they should break up after that trash.
