You Really Wish There Was An Instrumental Version Cuz You Really Like The Music And You Really Don't Like The Vocals

Any genre. Just curious. I'm listening to this album by Headset and there is good stuff on it and I like the music but it starts out with that undie rapping that bugs me with domes and brains and heads flexing and flossing and your earhole receiving mad science, etc. There is, however, a lovely song that features someone named Lady Dragon. She rhymes in Japanese so I don't know if she is trying to expand my inner ear so that I can receive her mightily flexed science. This might be the way to go for future indie beatmakers: More languages, please!

That's just my problem though. (bad indie rapping has ruined more than one futuristic beatscape for me, lemme tellya.) I wanna hear yours.

I searched for a thread like this. Couldn't find one. My apologies if I missed it.

Someone on another thread just said this about Timberlake.

Sometimes I feel this way about !!!, other times I don't mind so much.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 19 June 2004 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

That Headset album DOES sound cool. But I probably won't listen to it again just cuzza the dome-expansion stuff. Isn't that sad? (I bought a Lamb cd for a dollar and i liked some of their noises but I couldn't take Breathy McKewpiedoll on vocals. Sorry, Lamb fanz. Vocal tolerance can be a fickle mistress.)

The Air/Baricco LP springs to mind.

Now see, brg30, there IS a thread for that:

Would you want to listen to a Dylan album if there were no vocals?

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 20 June 2004 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Roy Montgomery's vocals suit his music very well, even on "In Our Own Time" and "Kafka was Correct" where he sounds like a Jew's harp (the reviews are right). His delivery's perfect to me...deep, not mournful or theatrical, lending an ominous or queasy energy to the songs.

Although I really enjoy Jamie's vocals, I would love to have instrumental versions of Xiu Xiu records.

OTM Kevin, also REM in the Monster era.

phunktion, Sunday, 20 June 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Sonic Youth, definitely. I've listened to virtually all their albums in the last week and there's very little of it that wouldn't be improved by wiping the vocal track.

Keith Jarrett!

"Dillinger Escape Plan, and a lot of other metal and hardcore bands."

Bingo. One of these bands someday is actually going to have a singer that can do a bit more than just gargle and they will make a bunch of cash.

Hahah, that's true about Hugo Largo. She sucked. Sorry, sucky lady trying-to-hard-to-be-creepy with the scissors on stage. But it's true.

Smacks to anyone who mentions the Fall, however correct you may be.

Sasha (sgh), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

The (thankfully only) three tracks on Optometry with vocals. "I've got a great idea - we'll get some of the greatest free jazz musicians to play at the top of their game and have a brilliant DJ mix them in real time, pulling out surprising hooks and grooves out of it all. Then we can have Pauline Oliveros guest on some tracks. But that's not enough. To really push it over the top, we need to throw on some random sub-Franti schmucks rapping the most cliche anti-woman-as-sex-object lines and the hokiest beat poetry. "

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Everything by...

Claw Hammer
Richard Hell's Voidoids
The Troggs - Except for the "OH NO!!" that "I Can't Control Myself" opens with, I absolutely can't stand Reg Presley's voice/singing and never could. Honestly, to me he's always sounded EXACTLY like Squiggy from "Laverne & Shirley"!

Richard Thompson, Nick Drake. Probably anything else of that ilk - folk guitar playing = yay, folk singing = nay. I love me some John Fahey.

ledge, Monday, 4 February 2008 10:04 (eighteen years ago)

The entire Twilight Sad album. The singer's accent totally ruins that album for me.

The second Beirut album.

mike t-diva, Monday, 4 February 2008 11:46 (eighteen years ago)

2 Pac's "All Eyez On Me". Except it would have been better with the chorus vocalists also singing some melodies in the verses (and 2Pac's rapping removed)

Geir Hongro, Monday, 4 February 2008 11:51 (eighteen years ago)

I want an instrumental version of every song I own.

Kelley Polar: Love Songs...
This Mortal Coil: anything lisp-guy sings on
Lots of nu-Kompakt stuff
Tim Buckley: Starsailor

Clarke, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 14:03 (eighteen years ago)

wow, i love the vocals on 'starsailor'

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 14:07 (eighteen years ago)

Most people do... And I think it's a fascinating album, and a great listen for the most part. I've just always had an aversion to really gymanstic, demonstrative singing, and I would love to hear Starsailor without Buckley's vocals.

Clarke, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 14:41 (eighteen years ago)

Nutjob
