not terribly impressed with "Talk About Our Love" but I'm painfully ashamedly curious to hear "Should I Go" which samples "Clocks." Album is out at the end of the month but doesn't seem to have leaked yet.

is turn it up on this? or is that something else

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 19 June 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0001Z4P32/ref=pd_ecc_rvi_1/104-7009188-0711135

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 19 June 2004 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

that song is great!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 19 June 2004 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Whatever the single with Kanye was, DB and I saw the video for it. Conclusions:

1. She looked in the video more like an alien than ever more (and I've thought she was darned attractive but the effect here was...unsettling).

2. Kanye sorta saved the song -- in complete opposition to El Diablo's feelings, where she thought Brandy had a fine performance in a Mary J. Blige putdown style until Kanye opened his mouth!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 June 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and this is the Afrodisiac in my heart.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 June 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i always thought brandy looked like janis from the electric mayhem

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 19 June 2004 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

you figure brandy used to have her own show and she might have learned to.. you know.. emote. but her new video plus her cameo in the gunit stunt video makes her look like nothing but a deer in the headlights.

two months pass...
I think Timbaland's contributions to this album are pretty unstoppable, especially "Who is She 2 You"

djdee2005, Monday, 30 August 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

really? i think most of Tim's contributions are pretty weak, and am perplexed by the choice of dull-n-worthy "Who Is She 2 You" for the new single. she should've picked the title track!

i also love "Come As You Are", despite the fact i REALLY should be sick of indian-flavored R&B at this point. "I Tried" is nice, but at the end of the day unnecessary in a world where "Cry Me A River", "Nowhere" and "Keep It Movin'" still exist. "Sadiddy" is very annoying. "Should I Go" is a non-event.

Mind Taker, Monday, 30 August 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Kiley Dean - Honkydisiac?

Yo, Ned, how come you didn't end up burning all those Veldt compilations anyway?

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Monday, 30 August 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually like Sadiddy a bunch, simply bcuz the melody is totally memorable (in a good way) and keeps the samey-ness of the diwali-like beat from getting annoying.

djdee2005, Monday, 30 August 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

the original "Who Is She 2 U" totally pales in comparison to the remix w/ Usher.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 30 August 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

strange you guys didn't mention "Turn it Up" or "Focus" - both Tim tracks (I'm pretty sure) and probably my two favorites on the album. "Who is She 2 U" does suck though, agreed on that.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Monday, 30 August 2004 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"Focus" may be my favourite too, possibly. "Turn It Up" just sounds too try-hard.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 30 August 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Why is Brandy still allowed to make music? Shouldn't she have been beheaded and fed to a gaggle of famished hyaenas by now?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 30 August 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Every time they try to sneak up on her she catches them, seeing as her eyes are on opposite sides of her head (like a horse).

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

"Who is She 2 U" does suck though, agreed on that.

woooooo say WHAT?!
One of the best songs on the album, a definite highlight. I love how her voice sounds grainy in parts, its incredibly addictive.

djdee2005, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"in parts"

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

What a stupid album name.

Mind you, there's a gym centre near me in which the letters have rotted off partly. Among the things advertised outside, one of which is 'AFROBICS'.

Perhaps she could have an album launch there.

Sasha (sgh), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i like turn it up!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Yo, Ned, how come you didn't end up burning all those Veldt compilations anyway?

Because nobody ever ASKED me to burn one! As it is I'm in semi-regular touch with the guys now anyway and don't want to tread on their turf.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"in parts"

Yes, in parts. Its silky smooth and then when she's hitting this nervous, confrontational tone it hits this little bit of grit and sounds beautiful.

djdee2005, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I definitely hear what you mean about her voice. not her best song, but maybe her best vocal performance that I've ever heard.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 02:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I should really listen to the song before I tease but Brandy's voice has been gravelly since "The Boy Is Mine".

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

The Tom Waits of female r'n'b, that's Brandy.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha I actually meant "raspy" but I was seduced by the "grainy"/"gravelly" alliteration.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

would this album have made more sense if it hadn't been released in the middle of the summer? it's got such a cozy wintry feeling...

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow that's exactly what I was thinking.
Get out of my head!

djdee2005, Thursday, 9 September 2004 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

crazy! it MUST be true then!

i bought it yesterday! the nights are drawing in, after all

zebedee (zebedee), Thursday, 9 September 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

(also it was on sale)

zebedee (zebedee), Thursday, 9 September 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

it feels almost too restrained in places. tim was never as good at haute beats (pun sadly kinda intended) as like shek'spere or darkchild (he's just a little too grimy), but a lot of this record seems to swim around a weird middle ground.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 9 September 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, at least there's more positivity than not here, so I'ma force the guys at home to mail me a copy.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 9 September 2004 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

a producer my brother is tight with claims to have sold the beat for "Should I Go" to Tim. now i'm kinda curious to hear it, just to see if that's plausible (supposedly Tim added some stuff but it still was essentially ghost-produced).

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 9 September 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, he's probably the same nice lad who sold those beats to Pharrell last year ;-).

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 9 September 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

oh i don't doubt that tim fishes for beats at this point. he's a busy dude. cf. dre

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 9 September 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

haute beats!! arf

two years pass...
this album totally got shafted, judging from the thread, but i think it's pretty much perfect. it's subdued, sure, but that's what it sets out to do - as a break-up album it's supremely effective, all those hushed, layered voices and the opulent but not overwhelming strings which are the basis for most of the songs - ideal for wallowing in melancholy. brandy's lyrics are spot-on, too - that vague, uncommitted "maybe i should get up and go wash my face" on 'i tried', and the amazing opening salvo of 'focus': "should anybody ask for me, tell 'em i'll be right back in a real short time; it's just that i lost my mind."

when timbaland tries to be coldplay i think the results are (against the odds) uniformly excellent - latterly of course it's become even more clear, what with 'lovestoned/i think she knows' from justin and 'all good things (come to an end)' and 'say it right' from nelly f. this is where all that really began though!

also, the strings on 'come as you are' = the strings on 'chop me up'.

lex pretend (lex pretend), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

I never got around to hearing this. I LOVED Full Moon (the title track is one of my fave singles of the decade), is this really as good? I liked the single "Talk About Our Love"...

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

i never heard all of full moon. 'talk about our love' is brilliant but something of a red herring - it doesn't stick out but the rest of the album is both lusher and more depressive.

lex pretend (lex pretend), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

this isn't nearly as good but "Who is She 2 U" is one of the better songs I've heard her do

great remix that fell through the cracks because it materialised about a decade too early:
