2001

adam west (adamwest), Saturday, 19 June 2004 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

chronic. 2001 sucked.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Sunday, 20 June 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

2001 is better for beats, the original for realer lyrics.

scg, Sunday, 20 June 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

They're both good but Chronic is obviously superior.

djdee2005, Sunday, 20 June 2004 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

realer lyrics like 'gap teeth in my mouth so my dicks got to fit'? haha.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Sunday, 20 June 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

that's "gap teeth in your mouth" - good to see guys who criticize lyrics doing such a careful job of listening

Musical Bear (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 20 June 2004 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

typo...... if it was 'my mouth' that would have to be a spectacular feat of removed ribs, porn star measurements, and awful dentistry.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Sunday, 20 June 2004 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

2001 is more advanced. that is all

peter $., Sunday, 20 June 2004 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I love more songs off 2001 but I don't know if that's because I was in a position to hear them in clubs (cf. being ten years old for The Chronic)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 21 June 2004 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

dre really came into his own on 2001, I think. The addition of Scott Storch clearly did alot for his production blah blah blah.
(also: I am just not terribly fond of early nineties hip-hop, faster BPMs and looped breaks as opposed to programmed drums, etc.)

obviously search: "let me ride", "day the niggaz took over", "lil' ghetto boy" BUT pretty much ALL of 2001 is total gold.

OCP (OCP), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course the "superior" sound of programmed drums..erm.

djdee2005, Monday, 21 June 2004 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry I'm just being bitter.

djdee2005, Monday, 21 June 2004 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

?

OCP (OCP), Monday, 21 June 2004 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

expounding:
I'm bitter about the early-90s-hip-hop-sucks line that ILM seems to hold as a combination of the belief in the superiority of Euro dance music and a reaction to the corny hip-hop fuxxx.

Obv. they don't really think it all sucks and you can like whatever music you like. I hate Arrested Development and love Lil Jon but I feel like peeps are shortchanging the early 90s.

djdee2005, Monday, 21 June 2004 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Come on, the Chronic.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 21 June 2004 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm bitter about the early-90s-hip-hop-sucks line that ILM seems to hold as a combination of the belief in the superiority of Euro dance music and a reaction to the corny hip-hop fuxxx.

oh, I just don't like the speed of a whole lot of that stuff. 2001 is much more, uh, blunted in tempo, I think.

OCP (OCP), Monday, 21 June 2004 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

That's why I like the Chronic, it's speed feels more aggressive.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 21 June 2004 04:32 (twenty-two years ago)

2001 is consistently great, whereas Chronic, as we all know, is basically 4 great tracks and not much else.
I was gonna say that Chronic had higher highs, but 'Still D.R.E' is probably my fave hip hop track ever.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Monday, 21 June 2004 06:45 (twenty-two years ago)

the chronic is better than 2001 in all ways.

the lyrics for dre are better, as snoop and DOC were writing his rhymes. his lumbering delivery is far suited to the more staightforward flow (it actually flowed as well, still dre's rhymes are jerky and awkward) snoop and DOC gave him.

the beats were far funkier on the chronic, compared to 2001. the new guests on chronic are 090335 times better than dre's new lot, who noone has heard from since 2001. am dumbfounded that anyone thinks the chronic is 4 tracks good and nothing else. there's only 2 weak tracks on there, nigga with a gun, and rat a tat. everything else is gold.

2001 on the other hand, is full of mediocrity. dre has been coasting on the rep made album albums like the chronic for a number of years now.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Monday, 21 June 2004 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno though, i'd say his verses on 'forgot about dre' are better than anything he spits on The Chronic, if not anything ever. Saying that though, nothing on Chronic 2001 comes close to lyrical tightness as 'stranded on death row' does.

scg, Monday, 21 June 2004 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

the way a lot of ILMers think early 90s hip hop is poor is kinda like some kid into the strokes saying the late 60s were boring for rock.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

If you are completely lacking in reading comprehension, yes.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I like O.G. Chronic...but I probably listen to 2001 more.

FWIW.

ddb (ddb), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

orig - chronic 2 is good, but the big orchestral stuff has started to sound dated to me.

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I prefer 2001.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

OTM, alex.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

But it's not even like old skool Dre represents whatever strawmen the anti-early 90s rap crew like to knock down regularly; have you ever heard 'afropuffs' or 'u can't c me'?? They're really poppy with weird Tim-like synth noises in them, and not a ron c breakbeat in sight! Furthermore, 'what's my name' and much of The Chronic and Doggystyle is really quite camp, musically.

scg, Monday, 21 June 2004 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

dre popularised the west coast hip hop sound. so of course, it doesnt sound like any of the east coast hip hop from that period.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

there's only 2 weak tracks on there, nigga with a gun, and rat a tat. everything else is gold.

Nigga With a Gun is tight! it hits! it's gangsta!

"I breaks em off but I ain't speakin about between the thighs
I'm talkin about cockin' the gauge right between your eyes
That'll make you drop to your knees cos you realise
that a gat will make any nigga civilised"

love it!

tk, Monday, 21 June 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

'The Next Episode' is playing in the caff, so I'll pick 2001.

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Monday, 21 June 2004 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in SF you are funee.

Remember when you said RJD2 wasn't hip-hop cuz some of his fans don't like other hip-hop? That was good times.

djdee2005, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

dre popularised the west coast hip hop sound. so of course, it doesnt sound like any of the east coast hip hop from that period.

I think this is otm actually - 2001 reflects the chart realities of its time i.e. the east coast sound - people around ilm seem to groove behind east coast production more, and 2001's got that semi-muffled big-orchestral east coast thing goin' for it

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Dee, your tiresome inability to distinguish the opinions of one or two posters from the whatever imaginary collective mind of ILM which you've decided is the evil to end all evil for the moment is way lamer than my inability to distinguish RDJ2's from elevator muzak.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I think if Dre had released an album in '96 chock full of tracks like "California Love" it might have beaten both The Chronic and 2001 for me.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

titchyschneiderMk2, Thursday, 2 August 2007 10:51 (eighteen years ago)

2001 sucked barring 2 or 3 songs.

No way. This is a great album, and the '2001 Instrumental' album alone proves it.

Richard Wood Johnson, Thursday, 2 August 2007 13:16 (eighteen years ago)

i listen to 2001 more u_u

that said the mastering on that album was really terrible

deej, Thursday, 2 August 2007 13:20 (eighteen years ago)

the new guests on chronic are 090335 times better than dre's new lot, who noone has heard from since 2001.

2001 wins for 'some l.a. niggaz'

and what, Thursday, 2 August 2007 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

I really don't think I could pick one over the other. Both amazing.

The Reverend, Thursday, 2 August 2007 22:23 (eighteen years ago)

The addition of Scott Storch clearly did alot for his production blah blah blah.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 2 August 2007 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

or at the very least, 3 months

deej, Monday, 26 November 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

chronic 92 was so much better for so many reasons which i do not have the time to post right now but will do later today, after which no one will dare post a poll like this ever again.

titchyschneiderMk2, Monday, 26 November 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

hahahaha

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 26 November 2007 17:02 (eighteen years ago)

The Reverend, Monday, 26 November 2007 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

The Chronic. I like it most definitely, but never thought it was as great as others did (I preferred Doggystyle).

2001 was...well, insufferably boring for about half of the tunes. Which is too bad because there were definitely good hits on it ("What's the Difference", "Forgot about Dre", etc..)

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 00:30 (eighteen years ago)

"2001 was...well, insufferably boring for about half of the tunes"

OTM

titchyschneiderMk2, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 00:36 (eighteen years ago)

also, dres lumbering vocals needed doc or snoop writing for them, not eminem or worse, jay-z or royce or whover was writing on there. also, dre's new 'horror movie' strings and far too minimal and funkless sound on 2001 = dud.

titchyschneiderMk2, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 00:38 (eighteen years ago)

yea, the production was sort of "uhm, wtf" for a lot of the album.
