Venom rocks me all the way to hell

I don't know how you geniuses search for old threads, but I can't find a Venom thread so I'd just like to mention that Welcome to Hell, Black Metal and At War With Satan are swell records to own and listen to, but just recently I discovered that Cast In Stone, their 10 year reunion thing that they put out years ago already is really, really, really good unlike that crappy Possessed album and all those Live albums and all the crappy ones in between, not to mention it's a 2 CD set with almost 40 songs on the thing. It rocks like Motorhead. It's the good stuff. And, is it just me, or is satanic rock just plain GRATE as long as it's goofy-sounding? I mean, Venom's always scary, but these GRATE albums are kinda monster movie scary, as opposed to completely disorienting, psychotic and schizophrenic, real mental problems scary. In other words NWOBHM was cool, but the NWOFUS really sucks ass and bothers my little psyche.

Hey! I did a thread Taking Sides Venom vs. Bathory! Bathory got the nod from me for their consistently appalling din, but I have to admit 'Welcome to Hell' kicks my ass all around the room then sacrifices it on the altar of Moloch. "Angel Dust, need a shot, to get me through the day!" And "120 Days in Sodom" is a worthy companion to the book and film, it even gets fonkay in the middle! "The whole city, a sinner's delight...hatred and slaughter, degradation and lust!" Sounds like the best party of all time! Hey Charon, step on the gas already!

Sorry, that's "1000 Days in Sodom". I've just got the film on the brain because I bought copies of it for everybody for Xmas

dave q, Saturday, 17 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nice! Maybe ethan's right. Maybe we are the same person. Good for you, dave q. Venom is worth fighting for. Well, some of it... in a way, it's better than Motorhead.

Nude Spock, Saturday, 17 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not better than vintage Motorhead they're not!

Still, Venom are fucking ace. If not for AT WAR WITH SATAN (and specifically "Rip Ride") I might've gone all Columbine back in high school. I also quite liked Mantas's (or was it Abbadon's?) live reading of Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King" on the live Canadian e.p.

"Angel Dust" is a lot better than "Speedfreak" but I'd have to pick Motorhead too.

"Lay down your soul to the Gods' rock and roll!"

Kris, Saturday, 17 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, Motorhead is better. I said, "in a way they're almost better" and what I mean by that is that a lot of Venom's old stuff sounds a lot like classic Motorhead. But, Venom is tacky and Satanic and IN A WAY, that's kind of neat. Motorhead is just cooler, though, period. Satan rock is lame. But, Venom do it so goofily it's cool to be lame. It's hip to be square, man. Get me?

Nude Spock, Motorhead fan, Saturday, 17 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh no, I forgot the crucial word "almost" before. Well, I can see the call for response, then. Truly, I meant no harm. Venom is relatively nothing in the scope of things, except to those few cool people who don't feel like a damn idiot picking up 3 or 4 cds with a huge pentagram on the cover.

I've had 'Live Like An Angel' going thru my head for a few weeks, on and off. I think that may be my favourite Venom song, although more than anything it's the grey, paper peeling, fuzzy, wretchedly lo-fi production that really inspires me.

It is impossible not to love "Countess Bathory".

I must share with you this marvellous Amazon review of their 2006 album, 'Metal Black':

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful:
COMEBACK ALBUM OF THE DECADE, July 2, 2006
By old school alice fan "Matt" (Vancouver BC Canada)

This album will blow your head clean off. Oh sure, you have wimp friends who say, "Oh, VENOM can't play, they can't sing." That's because your friends are a bunch of idiots who have neither brains nor taste. They do what they are told, and they listen to what they're told. They are sheep. They own Nine Inch Nails albums. Why do you hang out with such losers? Discard them. Threaten them if they call or try to come over. Then... Do yourself a huge favor by educating yourself about rockn'roll. Discover that only rarely bands come along that influence and in effect jumpstart entire forms and genres of popular music. Like Buddy Holly. Elvis. Arlo Guthrie. The Beatles. The Mamas and Papas. The Doors. Alice Cooper. Kiss. Nirvana. VENOM. Yes, VENOM. This unholy trinity trio from Jolly Old didn't just jumpstart the whole 80's. 90's, and beyond for hardcore death black noise thrash speed metal, they rammed a trident straight up the gulliver of the mainstream and we have been wallowing in a myriad of awesome heavy thrash in the decades thus ever since. VENOM did it all first. They are the godfathers of anything you're probably listening to now and never got the respect they deserve. Cronos rules. Cronos is God. That voice. The charisma. The talent. The presence. The lyrics. Nothing can touch VENOM when they are at their best. Nothing. And this album is VENOM AT THEIR BEST. This album kills. This album is everything great about WELCOME TO HELL, AT WAR WITH SATAN, POSSESSED, CALM BEFORE THE STORM, CAST IN STONE, and RESURRECTION all rolled into one killer, I mean, one FREAKIN killer album that you won't believe. Mike Hickey has recorded, along with Count Cronos himself, of course, the deadliest licks this side of Hades. His solos will astound you. What a great guitarist. A few listens, and the riffs will effen haunt you. They are that brilliant. And Count Cronos, the Vampire Supreme Himself, By Holy Order of the Satanic Majesties Request, what can I say. On his shoulders rests the responsibility of creating the greatest of all subgenres of music, BLACK METAL. ASSASSIN will ring in your ears over and over and over. ANTICHRIST is one of the greatest songs ever written, never mind one of the best VENOM ever written. REGE SATANAS should be #1 on the Billboard Charts. HOUSE OF PAIN will have you wanting to destroy everything you see without knowing why. DARKEST REALM is probably Western Civilization's greatest cultural achievement since AT WAR WITH SATAN. MALEFICARUM will make you do anything, even sell your grandmother to gypsy slave traders, just for the pleasure of hearing it again. And again. When you hear Count Cronos cry, "Maleficaruuuuuuuuuuuuummmmm" you'll understand. It is paradise. Unbound. Rise. Fall. Into Hell. Maleficaruuuuummmmm...... This album rules. This band rules. Cronos rules all. Listening to this album will make you feel like a forty foot tall rampaging gorilla made of steel and Jack Daniels with the self confidence of Godzilla. You will conquer anything with VENOM in your stereo. Tell your wimp friends to listen to some real metal... V E N O...freakin' M Thank you dark lords for granting Cronos a miraculous recovery to release this gem. This is one of the greatest albums of all time. I have spoken. I'm gonna listen to it again right now. "I bear the soul of Satan, I wear the seal of Death...ANTECHRIST!" If you don't know who VENOM is or don't think VENOM is the greatest band of all time, then you are a cultureless and clueless idiot. We feel sorry for you. Why do you live? VENOM RULES.

moley, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 07:16 (eighteen years ago)

haha, "why do you live?"

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 07:18 (eighteen years ago)

The review itself attracts this equally excellent comment from another Amazonian:

DoctorBass says:
"Matt," I love the flesh-shredding brutality of your review! You pulverize the clueless with the kind of ruthlessness that would make VENOM most proud. What a crushing, articulate condemnation of those who dare blaspheme the Dark Lord's court musicians. Damn, you are clearly not just a death and black metal mega-lover: You are a bona-fide Luciferian. I never thought I'd meet a real one here @ Amazon.com! This makes me quite happy. Keep the evil in top form. You know how.

moley, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 07:22 (eighteen years ago)

I think I will buy this album.

It really does make me want to hear the record. And I don't like Venom.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 10:34 (eighteen years ago)

Their first album has the highest pulls-to-plays ratio in my collection.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 11:52 (eighteen years ago)

If not for AT WAR WITH SATAN (and specifically "Rip Ride") I might've gone all Columbine back in high school

That was remarkably tasteless of me. ugh.
