I'm really fucking drunk and can't pull the jewel case of Wilco's "A Ghost Is Born" out of the cardboard sleeve

Goddamn it, why no easy access, Tweeeeeedy??

Yeah I found this CD in a sealed promo copy at Aron's Records in Hollywood tonight so I figured fuck it, why not buy it three days early and be cool like that? But now I can't get it out of the sleeve because I've been drinking tonight! For once excessive alcohol consumption is working against me! arghh....

is this a sign that the album blows? or is it really great?

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:11 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a very nice little album by a very nice little band. You Yanks be crazy over Wilco.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, let us know when you finally get it out of there and listen to it. I'd love to read a drunken Wilco review...

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:24 (twenty-two years ago)

aaaarrrrgggghhhh, cardboard sleeves. why isn't anybody protesting these wasteful, annoying and useless things? they are the longboxes of our time.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

the last time i listened to wilco was almost exactly two years ago, in june. i stayed up all night at the beach with friends, then when i got home the 5am fog cover broke and i watched the sunrise from bed through my window while listening to YHF very softly. i guess i've just sort of assumed it's not going to get any better than that.

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Most of the ones I have are from Nonesuch. It's their gimmic, or something. I agree they're really fucking stupid, those sleeves. Gear, just rip the fucking thing off and toss it!

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:28 (twenty-two years ago)

okay I was almost to the point of tearing the motherfucker off but it slipped out just before I shredded it, as if in fear. fuck you Nonesuch! okay time to listen to it and a drunken review is forthcoming.

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:30 (twenty-two years ago)

WTF, this album is 67:30 long?

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Tweedy you son of a bitch give me something 45 minutes or less

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:32 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a ten-minute krautrock track.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not joking either.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:33 (twenty-two years ago)

well so far there's some loud guitars with Neil Young-esque soloing, which is more than I can say for YHF, so things are looking up.

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i like this drunken review! he hasn't hit "play" yet and he's already two posts into the review. (and several more posts if you include "Goddamn it, why no easy access, Tweeeeeedy??" which we probably should.)

fact checking cuz (fcc), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:34 (twenty-two years ago)

WTF, this album is 67:30 long? Tweedy you son of a bitch give me something 45 minutes or less

Why don't more record reviews start like this? I hate long CDs!

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:34 (twenty-two years ago)

that was a x-post (as is this). dammit, he appears to actually have started listening.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Tweedy in Ragged Glory esque guitar solo shockah! Maybe it's because I've had lot sof Heineken tonight but so far so good.

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:36 (twenty-two years ago)

there were about four words in that first song and I liked it. song 2 has some nice piano up front. Tweedy isn't sounding like Tweedy on this album, not yet anyway. I'm totally gonna wave this shit in my roommate's face tomorrow btw, and be all like "tweeeeedy is a mf'ing genius, yo, tweeeeedy etc"

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Song titles?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:38 (twenty-two years ago)

fuck I'm a drunken shit, song 1 was "At Least that's whatr You said" and this piano based one is "Hell Is Chrome". ...it's good so far, really

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:39 (twenty-two years ago)

They played one on a talk show the other night. It started off boring then got real good all of a sudden.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I wanted to know why hell is chrome, but Tweedy was not forthcoming with the info

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Spiders (Kidsmoke) in effect....Krautrock weirdness indeed...Tweedy gonna come in with "trans...Chicago....express" any sec now probably

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't there a Sponge Bob Squarepants where they say everything is chrome in the future? Maybe Tweedy is telling us something about the direction Mankind is headed....

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:44 (twenty-two years ago)

okay I'm loving this all so far, and even though it's already better than YHF it'll probably get less acclaim for some damn reason. Also, Tweedy in lyrical nonsense shockah, if anyone can tell me what the hell he's talking about in any of these songs please explain thanks

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Tweeeeeedy I get it, guitar solos over repetitive new wave beats, move onto Muzzle of bees thx

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The 10min Krautrock is song 3? Uh oh.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:50 (twenty-two years ago)

it's really unusual because the beat of the tune always seems to be picking up steam but it's really not. also, there's lots of '70s style power chords in the middle every so often. it's better than I thought it would be. okay now it's over.

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

it gets better Gear! - middle part of the album is the best stretch, from Muzzle to Company

Josh Love (screamapillar), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I like muzzle of Bees but right now I'm looking at the back and seeing a fifteen minute tune next to last on the album. TWEEEEEDY you bastard! I need to sleep tonight!

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:54 (twenty-two years ago)

not including Company of course, which is kinda dull.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:55 (twenty-two years ago)

For some reason when Sick Mouthy said that there was a 10min Krautrock song I pictured it being towards the end. At least it's not all slow in a Stooges "We Will Fall" type fiasco, eh?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"Company On My Back" has some lovely guitar over the chorus.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Hummingbird is track 5 and really good, like a cross between the Beatles and a sitcom theme song, nice piano stuff on here. okay I need to pass out. continued in the morning, ssory.

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 20 June 2004 09:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Wimp!

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Sunday, 20 June 2004 09:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Deserter!

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 20 June 2004 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Now I'm gonna have to go to bed with indie fuxor equivilant of musical blueballs.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 20 June 2004 09:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha!

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Sunday, 20 June 2004 09:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i love how being drunk is somehow 50% of the justification for starting a thread. no one ever posts when they're itchy, logey, horny, or full from a big meal. or if they do, they don't feel the need to mention it.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Sunday, 20 June 2004 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I've only ever started two threads, and one of them was a joke, but then I haven't gone on ILx drunk yet.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 20 June 2004 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I JUST WENT TO A BIG BUFFET AND REALLY WANT TO HEAR THE WILCO ALBUM, ESP. AFTER GEAR'S REVIEW!

C or D?

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 20 June 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I had no intention of buying this, but I'm going to go find it right now. This is how reviews should be done, seriously.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 20 June 2004 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

hey I'm awake and Wilco is back on! You know something I gotta say this isn't one of those situations where you go home drunk with an album, wake up the next morning, roll over, and groan "what the hell are you and why did I think you were awesome last night?" It's still really excellent, I mean this is a LOT better than YHF and the only reason it won't get the same amount of acclaim (I'm guessing) is because it doesn't have as much hype nor an intriguing backstory. I'm not totally sold on that 15 minute dirge at the end there but I'll listen to it next time I'm drunk...

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 20 June 2004 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

if you listened to it on the website you wouldn't have to open it or anything. I'm just saying. Okay, thanks bye

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

not that it's relevant or anything...suddenly, getting drunk sounds like a good idea, for then I would have an excuse for sounding like an idiot

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah if I had a COMPUTER maybe!

oh wait...

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

You need to make sure your roommate stops using the computer all the time to look for "nude tracker hat dude" searches on Google.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

This will be my parting gift to her come September:

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 21 June 2004 06:48 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahahahaha. Has anything else interesting happened in the aftermath of "the incident"?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 21 June 2004 06:55 (twenty-two years ago)

lots of this

*cackles*

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 21 June 2004 07:10 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
more drunken reviews, ilm!

timmy tannin (pompous), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 08:56 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, this was great! i'd have liked to have seen gear come to terms with 'less than you think' whilst drunk AND tired, though!

although to be fair, that song is great to listen to when extremely unwell. seriously.

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 09:02 (nineteen years ago)

I wanted to know why hell is chrome, but Tweedy was not forthcoming with the info

hahahahaha

Marmot (marmotwolof), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 09:05 (nineteen years ago)

Hummingbird sounds like "Stand By Your Man"

wogan lenin (dog latin), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:04 (nineteen years ago)

this thread is awesome.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

my friend described this album as Neu! meets Zuma-era Crazy Horse, which makes it sound like the best thing ever. I still need to get this.

M@tt He1geson: Sassy and I Don't Care Who Knows It (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, thanks for reviving this! I am truly LOLing over here, so much so that I had to get up and walk away from the computer. Sheer brilliance from Gear!

Stingy (stingy), Thursday, 11 January 2007 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

Neu! + Zuma-era Crazy Horse + bleach (the disinfectant) + cut-up nonsense lyrics - any reason to put this on and let it play all the way from start to finish.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Thursday, 11 January 2007 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

where did Gear! ever go?

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 11 January 2007 22:00 (nineteen years ago)

r.i.p. ; (

‘•’u (gear), Thursday, 11 January 2007 22:03 (nineteen years ago)

i am wearing my wilco shirt right now. what a coincidence!

dave f (dave f), Thursday, 11 January 2007 22:38 (nineteen years ago)

this happened to me with the new converge cd. i tried forever and eventually gave up and tore the cardboard sleeve in half to take out the cd. it made me inexplicably depressed.

critique de la vie quotidienne (modestmickey), Friday, 12 January 2007 05:53 (nineteen years ago)

i just downloaded my copy.

jambalaya backgammon (grady), Friday, 12 January 2007 07:36 (nineteen years ago)

OTM re that new Converge, that was the worst one I'd ever come across.

jonviachicago (jonviachicago), Friday, 12 January 2007 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

the last time i listened to wilco was almost exactly two years ago, in june. i stayed up all night at the beach with friends, then when i got home the 5am fog cover broke and i watched the sunrise from bed through my window while listening to YHF very softly. i guess i've just sort of assumed it's not going to get any better than that.

-- vahid (vfoz...), June 20th, 2004 10:27 AM.

this amuses me for some reason. i've never heard a Wilco album in full.

reverto levidensis (blueski), Friday, 12 January 2007 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

jon, glad it wasn't just my copy. i'll consider it a feature, not a bug, now.

critique de la vie quotidienne (modestmickey), Friday, 12 January 2007 15:58 (nineteen years ago)
