from the Forced Exposure mailorder update:

SHRIMP BOAT: Something Grand 4CD (AUM 028/30).
"Shrimp Boat was a phenomenal band that made
music out of Chicago from the mid '80s clear
through to 1993. Taking inspiration from
bluegrass, jazz, country, rock 'n' roll, and most
importantly - their own collective gung-ho, their
ability to voluminously manifest new song form
from the air around them left those exposed
awestruck. Three albums were released in their
lifetime: great, beautiful documents all, but
they aren't even the half of it. Ian Schneller,
Sam Prekop, David Kroll, Eric Claridge and Brad
Wood were Shrimp Boat. They recorded everything,
and this set manifests the extended 'Mega-money
shot' culled from well over 400 hours of
unreleased tapes - 16-tracks made at Idful Music,
4-tracks made at their loft on Archer Street,
live stage performances, and radio broadcasts.
Something Grand is a 3xCD collection featuring 51
tracks and a 54-page booklet packed with photos,
show flyers and two sets of comprehensive liner
notes." First 2000 copies include a bonus 4th
full-length CD of further exclusive material.

I know, I know, but "Here Comes Your Ride" is still one of the sweetest songs I've ever heard.

I always liked them. Actually, I think I have every record. Not sure I need a 4 CD box set, though.

Been listening to this for about 24 hrs -- really fun, the music is great, and the package is gorgeous...

it's a little weird that it's all unreleased stuff.

duke release, Monday, 21 June 2004 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

No no - it's the three released albums PLUS loads of unreleased stuff

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 21 June 2004 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

plus, they already put out a CD of "from the vaults" type stuff, that Volume One CD on their Specimen label. I wonder if that CD is recapitulated on the box? I think originally they were going to do a series of them (hence the Volume One title)?

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 21 June 2004 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I think all of this stuff is unreleased, actually. Some of it was intended for release here and there, particularly stuff intended for the final record. Unless I am misunderstanding the liner notes... I'll have to do some homework and see.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...

vibing on them right now. not sure if i want to delve into the 4cd box set quite yet, but maybe someone can convince me. anyone wanna talk shrimp boat?

or you could tell me about any bands doing similar things in the 80s and early 90s? maybe there is a connection between my shrimp boat appreciation and my the scene is now love?

three years pass...
two years pass...

just finally finished up this thing. I dunno how essential it is, this is exactly the kind of band that sounds excellent for two or three albums (in their case Duende and Cavale are both great) but their sound doesn't expand much past that. Still the sheer length of the thing for a band that was only around a few years is astounding.
