WHY DOES KIM'S UNDERGROUND HATE PROG???

PROG IS KINDA SHOEHORNED IN WITH PSYCH WHICH HAS CATEGORIES LIKE "60'S SOUTH AMERICAN PROG". WTF. NO RUINS OR MAGMA TO BE FOUND, JUST A PALTRY FEW KING CRIMSON DISCS. (GOOD KRAUTROCK SELECTION MOSTLY THOUGH)

CORNY TRIPSTER FUXXXXXXXXX

Jon Williams!!!!! (ROFFLE!@!@!@) (ex machina), Monday, 21 June 2004 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

prog junkie from small town in va says:
ill take what i can get.

emma cleveland (emma cleveland), Monday, 21 June 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

they should start selling blacklight posters and rasta hats with fake dreads, corny psych rock twinks!!@!@@!!

Jon Williams!!!!! (ROFFLE!@!@!@) (ex machina), Monday, 21 June 2004 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

GO TO MONDO KIM'S.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Not all prog is "cool" enough to make it into hip record stores. Though I'm surprised they wouldn't at least have a Ruins disc, on Shimmy Disc or something.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

when I think of prog, I don't think of Ruins. Magma though, sure. I got the Necronomicon CD at Mondo Kim's, it smokes (they have a bigger, better collection than Underground).

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Downtown Music Gallery on Bowery usually has got a pretty good Magma selection.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

which one is which

also, shouldn't some of the ruins* stuff be in the TzADIKK!@ seckkktion?!?! the experimental section is organized in a CRAP manner, IMHO

Jon Williams!!!!! (ROFFLE!@!@!@) (ex machina), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

At DMG? or Kims?

o. nate (onate), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Mondo is the one on St. Marks.

I should go to DMG soon, haven't been in a while. Jon, you'd like it (they have a Tzadik section).

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

they mix it all up and i do too, to tell the truth.
the last decent record store i went in had a prog/psych/kraut section, all together.
as if gong and soft machine have anything in common...
oh wait. they do.

emma cleveland (emma cleveland), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, Hstencil, what was your AIM ID again?

o. nate (onate), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

add a 23, nate.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

HSTENCIL I WAS AT MONDO KIM'S THENNNNNNNN

Jon Williams!!!!! (ROFFLE!@!@!@) (ex machina), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

prog/psych/kraut have DRUGS in common!

Ian c=====8 (orion), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

dude Jon I don't know what to tell you, then. I've always found their selection to be pretty decent.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

they have a lot of kraut

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

jon didn't spend enough time in the experiment section because he didn't see the THREE TAN AS FUCK CDs they had. stence,do you like tan as fuck?

Ian c=====8 (orion), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I still haven't heard TAN AS FUCK.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, Jon I saw you walking in Union Square around 1pm today. I should have shouted at you.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i was being sarcastic. i dont midn if they combine those genres, they are all my lifeforce anyway.

emma cleveland (emma cleveland), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, i will make you a cd at some point. when i come for the bardo pond show! they're like.. jammy psych/noise/drone. really good. think the dead C with more groove and treble.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

bardopond will either be a total mindfuck.
or...really boring.

thier records are like that too. im a sucker for drone so i let it slide, but other less dull humans might not.

emma cleveland (emma cleveland), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

bardo were really good when i saw 'em in august. but that's the only time i've seen them.

emma, i think you might be my secret ILM soulmate.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

their stock changes a lot. you'll see a lot of stuff one week that's not there the next, and so on. so maybe go back in a month and see if they have any ruins discs? or alternately walk over to other music.

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

one thing you can say about kims, their buying is eclectic and intelligent. also more respectful than other music, who tend to place lot of music in these dubious ephemeral categories like "american primitive" or "decadense."

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate other music's "then" section because i always forget about it until i'm going to pay.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

where is bardo pond playing?
i plan to come up to nyc in midjuly because i want to see mouse on mars. i really like that new album, its totally bootybass. i think that jaga jazzist is palying around that time too which might be nice, because there are 495037378 peopel in that band.

ian talk to me on aim sometime.
i need a musical cohort.
analogcrush.

emma cleveland (emma cleveland), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

bardo pond is playing at Tonic w/ Trad Gras Och Stenar on the second of july.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

damn, tonic. its 21+ right?
last time iwas in ny pita there played and i couldnt get in.

emma cleveland (emma cleveland), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"then" is just weird: everything before 1980, more or less. i usually head to that section first, isn't that pathetic?

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm not 21 and i've never had a problem getting into tonic.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Monday, 21 June 2004 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i look like a child.

emma cleveland (emma cleveland), Monday, 21 June 2004 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

embarrassing sibling anecdote:
didnt you cry to get into a weezer show once?

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Monday, 21 June 2004 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

or was that get up kids?

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Monday, 21 June 2004 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

embarrasing sibling anecdote:
didnt you buy an antiflag record once?
and then break it to be even punker?

emma cleveland (emma cleveland), Monday, 21 June 2004 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

embarrasing sibling anecdote:
didnt you toad'lly swoon when you saw orgy AND sugar ray playing together?

i cant imagine this going anywhere positive.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Monday, 21 June 2004 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i wish my sister read ILM so i could post about how much she loves dave matthews band, beyonce and that young male country singer everyone loves lately. but she wouldn't be embarassed by it.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Monday, 21 June 2004 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

well all of these are set far enough in the past to be looked on as "cute." maybe.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Monday, 21 June 2004 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, we were prepubescent. so we obviously had no chance of understanding reality.
or the possible future repercussions of our reputation on musical message boards. hahahh

emma cleveland (emma cleveland), Monday, 21 June 2004 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

they carded me and my girlfriend (hint: she's nowhere near carding age) last time we went to Tonic.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

dude wtf?? is the club actually 21+? they've looked at my ID before and said NOTHING.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Monday, 21 June 2004 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, it is.
i was really angry. alan licht was rumored to have palyed that night too.
ahhhhhhh.

emma cleveland (emma cleveland), Monday, 21 June 2004 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

wha? yeah I have never been carded at Tonic and have been going there for several years (though the early times were w/ my dad).

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Monday, 21 June 2004 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah it was weird considering the person running the list is a friend.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

guys, ash ra tempel "bois de la luna" is a fucking amazing song.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Monday, 21 June 2004 05:25 (twenty-two years ago)

onate: omg wtf

Jon Williams!!!!! (ROFFLE!@!@!@) (ex machina), Monday, 21 June 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil hangs out at middle school playgrounds

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

emma, what was the store with the awesome prog/psych/kraut section. Is it anywhere near DC/MD/NoVa?

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil hangs out at middle school playgrounds

uh, fuck you?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Which side of "nowhere near carding age" is she?

Which side of "nowhere near carding age" is she?

quite past it, thank you very much.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Try Rockit Scientist.
It's now on St Mark's just down the block from Kim's, on the opposite side.

Russ, Monday, 21 June 2004 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil i think the guy was just being silly. have some chamomile.

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 21 June 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

tea makes me sick, dude.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

psych-junkie in va here.
i'm surprised kim's wouldn't have more prog but it's been a couple years since I've been to Kim's Underground and I usually hit up Mondo's instead. DTMGallery does have a huge Magma selection as I remember but I can't listen to Magma for more than fifteen minutes before i wan't start burning arcane symbols in my forehead and sacrificing bassoons to the gods of Zeuhl. Same for most prog. Extended exposure to latter day Soft Machine left deep, deep scars.

dialecticbricks (dialecticbricks), Monday, 21 June 2004 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

dialecticbricks, as mentioned upthread I meant Mondo Kim's

Jon Williams!!!!! (ROFFLE!@!@!@) (ex machina), Monday, 21 June 2004 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

oops, my mind is numbed from staring at the computer all day at work.

dialecticbricks (dialecticbricks), Monday, 21 June 2004 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

where in va are you dialectic?
seeking wanky comrades.

emma cleveland (emma cleveland), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

between Charlottesville (about 45 mins from my home) and Harrisonburg (about 1/2 hr drive), in the very tiny mountain burg of Pocosan, I guess Stanardsville is the closest actual town. Though i have lived in both Cville and Harrisonburg don't ask me why i chose to live out in the middle of sticks.

dialecticbricks (dialecticbricks), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

do you grow your own?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

no,i don't grow my own but there are quite a few stills around. Thankfully i'm familiar with some of the propreitors so should i get the hankering for some blueberry moonshine it's never too far away.

dialecticbricks (dialecticbricks), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

whoa. i live in harrisonburg, but im from chesapeake.
you must be a downloading pioneer, because the holy ghost knows there arent any good record stores in this area.

emma cleveland (emma cleveland), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

no, not many good record stores, what does harrisonburg have anymore? Plan 9 and maybe Town and Campus, which I don't even know if that's still around. Not much to choose from. Thankfully though there's mailorder(even if UPS won't deliver to my house) and my old job used to take me to the big cities where i could buy things up close. Thankfully, my shelves are bulging at home and being in the middle of nowhere allows me the time to actually listen to all the records I bought while living in cities.

Bill Mills (dialecticbricks), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

dialecticbricks (dialecticbricks), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

btw, anything interesting happening in Harrisonburg these days. I make it there every couple of weeks to visit with relatives but I haven't seen a show there in a couple years when some friends of mine's band played the ballroom at JMU.

Bill Mills (dialecticbricks), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

umm, nothings happening at jmu.
we have macrock, im the booking coordinator.
we have houseshows for generic hardcore bands.
wxjm still has programming that includes 98% whitebred indierock, 1% wacked out noise (me, and perhaps 3 other cohorts) and 1% latino jams.

oh, town and campus just went out of business june 1.
which sucks, because i think the first director of wxjm founded it.
and plus plan 9 specialized mainly in ac/dc reissued lps. ughhh.

emma cleveland (emma cleveland), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

that's sad to hear about town and campus. I used to buy alot of used psych stuff on vinyl there when I was in high school. Hadn't been for a few years though. Plan 9, yeah sounds like them. When i used to work there it was like pulling teeth to get the buyer to get anything interesting in. I went to one of the macrock fests a couple years back, but remember little of it due to an extreme stomach ache caused by too many hot dogs from Jess's.

Bill Mills (dialecticbricks), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

when did you work there?
good friends nick barbery and mike keane did, at some point a couple years ago...

emma cleveland (emma cleveland), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe some other ILXor saw you coming and put up a bunch of really large unrelated box sets around the stuff you wanted, in an effort to obscure the content?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, i worked at the downtown charlottesville location but that was a long time ago, maybe 97-98. I used to be aquainted with a guy at the hburg location, but his name escapes me though I remember him having a huge vinyl collection in the neighborhood of a few thousand pieces and that i sold him a few MC5 bootlegs once, but alas that's all i remember other than he might've been the manager at the time.

Bill Mills (dialecticbricks), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
who is hoarding the scandinavian prog LPs?
where are they?

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Saturday, 24 December 2005 05:01 (twenty years ago)

I guess I understand the impetus behind organizing things into genres in stores (or collections), but I don't really agree with it. There are always so many border cases and bad classifications, that it tends to take more time than just doing everything all in one alphabetical lump. If I ever ran a record store, that's how I'd do it.

js (honestengine), Saturday, 24 December 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

kim's categories are a good barometer of hip taste though
