Goodbye to you, my trusted friend
We've known each other since we're nine or ten
Together we climbed hills or trees
Learned of love and ABC's
Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees

Goodbye my friend, it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Pretty girls are everywhere
When you see them i'll be there

We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed
Were just seasons out of time

Goodbye, Papa, please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family
You tried to teach me right from wrong
Too much wine and too much song
Wonder how I get along

Goodbye, Papa, it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Little children everywhere
When you see them i'll be there

We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song
Like the seasons, all have gone

Goodbye, Michelle, my little one
You gave me love and helped me find the sun
And every time that I was down
You would always come around
And get my feet back on the ground

Goodbye, Michelle, it's hard to die
When all the bird are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
With the fl0wers ev'rywhere
I wish that we could both be there

We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun
But the stars we could reach
Were just starfish on the beach.

omg, Monday, 21 June 2004 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Slayer should cover that like, pronto.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 21 June 2004 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

They did "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," anything's possible.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 June 2004 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

That was from the "Less than Zero" OST wasn't it?

But really, I choose Reign in Blood.

Seasons has more variety but Reign is just so much more visceral and fast.

I probably prefer South of Heaven to both of them though.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 21 June 2004 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)

That was from the "Less than Zero" OST wasn't it?

Yup. First CD (as opposed to first album, which was much earlier) I ever bought.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 June 2004 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, learn something new everyday.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 21 June 2004 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Seasons in the Abyss, fer sure. I love Reign in Blood but don't dig it out nearly as often as Seasons.

stephen morris (stephen morris), Monday, 21 June 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Reign in Blood, by far.

As great as "Seasons", "Dead Skin Mask", and "War Ensemble" are, I still prefer RIB, South of Heaven, Hell Awaits, Show No Mercy, and Haunting the Chapel more than that album.

abegrand, Monday, 21 June 2004 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Reign in Blood

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a pussy=I prefer Seasons in the Abyss

(and I do)

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 21 June 2004 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, if truth be told, the Slayer album I'm inclined to reach for the most is Undisputed Attitude. Sue me.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 21 June 2004 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Reign In Blood wins because Seasons, while it contains plenty of classics (like "War Ensemble," the title track, and "Spirit In Black"), also contains "Dead Skin Mask," the worst Slayer song ever.

South Of Heaven is my favorite Slayer disc.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

reign in blood easily
- gimme a break..

marcus, Monday, 21 June 2004 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex I'll be serving you with the lawsuit as soon as I dot all the i's and cross all the t's

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

also contains "Dead Skin Mask," the worst Slayer song ever

Wow. That is a phrase I have never seen before.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it my fault that TSOL, Minor Threat, Iggy Pop and D.I. are better songwriters than Slayer?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean it's as though you came in and said that Firedance was the best Killing Joke album

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 21 June 2004 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i took "undisputed attitude" as a personal affront because the dr. know cover is kinda half-assed.

(reign in blood by a mile. OF BLOOD.)

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with latebloomer and Phil - South of Heaven is still my favorite. Then a tie between Hell Awaits and Reign in Blood. Then Seasons. Then the rest.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Easily RIB (specially the reissue with "Aggresive Perfector" added), then SITA, followed by SOH. But those last two would've switched places had SOH not included a lifeless Judas Priest cover and an anti-televangelist number. (How original! Daring! Uncompromising!) But really, that entire fantastic Rick Rubin trilogy is nearly beyond criticism.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 05:32 (twenty-two years ago)

the dr. know cover is kinda half-assed.

Well, that's because Dr.Know were kinda half-assed.

nineteen years pass...

I really feel like Seasons has this weird vibe of wanting to be thrash-via-way of 70s classic rock. I'm specifically thinking of "Blood Red" and "Expendable Youth".

also "Dead Skin Mask" gets flack as really the overplayed and obvious song from the album, but I still find it effective. Tom's voice during the verse's is chilling, the lyrics are some of his more terrifying ones, and the song used to be massively effective live. that said, I get why someone would get tired of it.

second side has most of the crap, really. "Skeletons of Society" not a bad song, but it feels like it was written to pad time. but it also has the legendary "Born of Fire" and "Hallowed Point".

voted Reign in Blood sorry for wasting your time

wait this isn't a poll

Disco Biollante (Neanderthal), Monday, 8 January 2024 05:40 (two years ago)

I used to rank the top three: 1. South of Heaven, 2. Reign in Blood, and 3. Seasons. Now Reign is ahead of the rest by miles and I recognize that I was a fool.

beard papa, Monday, 8 January 2024 07:51 (two years ago)

Reign is objectively the best one, but South of Heaven will always be my favorite, with Seasons in third place

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 8 January 2024 11:55 (two years ago)

SoH has Lombardo's hero drumming, always a favorite for that.

RiB was the easiest one for me to burn out on due to the table restarting on side 2.

amazed I can even listen to Divine Intervention anymore. I went to London and Paris with only that tape with me for 11 days and played it hours a day

Disco Biollante (Neanderthal), Monday, 8 January 2024 17:50 (two years ago)

Reign is a brilliant gesture (it's like the Jesus & Mary Chain's Psychocandy in that way; it's the kind of album you could make, then immediately break up, and people would understand) but in terms of actual songs it's got what, three? "Angel of Death" is incredible, "Epidemic" is fantastic, "Raining Blood" is epic. Everything else is kind of speeding you along to the next thing.

South showed their range: doom with the title track, the '70s rock thing by covering Judas Priest's "Dissident Aggressor," and a couple of great songs in "Silent Scream" and "Mandatory Suicide."

Seasons is Slayer in imperial mode. The first three songs are fucking untouchable. I haaaaate "Dead Skin Mask" and have since the first time I heard it. The chorus is like splinters under my fingernails. But I think "Skeletons of Society" is great; it's one of my favorite Slayer songs, weirdly, and I like the double-tracked vocals on "Temptation," and "Seasons in the Abyss" is another grand epic. I think it's their best album.

I may be the only person who'll go to bat for Christ Illusion, but I like that it brings back the punkness of Reign. "Flesh Storm" and "Jihad" are great songs.

Tahuti Watches L&O:SVU Reruns Without His Ape (unperson), Monday, 8 January 2024 18:23 (two years ago)

Seasons was always my favorite, but I can now admit that I only listened to the first four songs on repeat.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Monday, 8 January 2024 18:30 (two years ago)

First three songs + title track for me

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 8 January 2024 19:14 (two years ago)

I really feel like Seasons has this weird vibe of wanting to be thrash-via-way of 70s classic rock. I'm specifically thinking of "Blood Red" and "Expendable Youth".

That helps explain why the former song is the only one I like from either of these records. I've been enjoying Hell Awaits more than either.

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 9 January 2024 16:07 (two years ago)
