nader (nader), Monday, 21 June 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

are promos out already?

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 21 June 2004 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

oh this looks good.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 21 June 2004 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

it is

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i hope my friend gets a promo of this soon and passes it along to moi-même!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

tiny 8 inch jack! NICE

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it akin to any mix we've heard of late (e.g. The Button-Down Mind Strikes Back?

nader (nader), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

of course i will never hear it since there's no way i'm spending 30 dollars on it

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, thank god for my special generous friend!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

(he's giving me his promo 12inch version of the new felix album too, dear friend i love you)

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

haha you know, with the amount of writing i do, i REALLY need to get on some promo lists

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

you so should! get on the right distributors' lists and your cup will totally runneth over

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

the fabric people dont like me though

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

go around them and find their us distributor! (maybe that will work)

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

why not jess? you get stuff from them direct?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

no because i dissed the packaging and concept of the series in my mayer/bugz review and someone from the label wrote a pissy email to matos.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

weird. oh well, it aint like you'll have to wait long for it anyway.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone know if/how i can get my hands on this canukistan¿

dyson (dyson), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i agree that the fabric series is too expensive. each release is usually around $22 US in my little corner of the world. this annoyance is further compounded by the fact my copy of fabric 13 was stolen not too long ago (along with 30 other cds and my car stereo). anyway, this looks really good.

tricky disco, Monday, 21 June 2004 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

what don't you like about the packaging/concept strongo?

tricky disco, Monday, 21 June 2004 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

it's too expensive, the packaging is overdesigned (and often ugly) and ends up scratching the CD's (just like the chain reaction packaging) and they're really middlebrow (on the fabric side...the fabriclive side is just boring neo-dnb).

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i always thought the high cost was due to lack of u.s. distribution. i guess middlebrow fits, but maybe that's the intent or middlebrow isn't as damning as it initially sounds.

if this is what you're talking about - i can't see much wrong with the layout.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

What are Akufen's DJ credentials?

JoB (JoB), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i think the packaging/graphic design is great most of the time...

tricky disco, Monday, 21 June 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i agree with strongo, the metal packaging is totally annoying and the cds rattle around and get totally scuffed up

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

akufens dj cred = none?

how is senor coconut going to be 'mixed'?

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i had a feeling this was going to be mixed digitally

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

What are Akufen's DJ credentials?

One of being an absolutely shit hot producer who runs a pretty great label (so far)...

(xpost)

Strongo - I wouldn't be surprised at all if it was digital.

___ (___), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

they're very cheap in england and are after all english releases for the english market. akufen can dj.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

pretty well and has put some storming tracks out, also with traktor etc, it's harder to draw the line between djing and live performance anyway

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, akufen might be able to play but "One of being an absolutely shit hot producer who runs a pretty great label" is in no way a good inidcator of being a decent dj, and hundreds of bored/disappointed nights that i have spent are testament to that....

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah but the fact that he can might help and also this isn't a live thing anyway, so it makes no odds whether he could cut it live or not. personally i couldn't give an arse about the "authenticity" of this and am happy to report it's a good set of tunes.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

thisis a totally insane cover - i have just blown my load all over the place this thing be grebt¡
http://www.fabriclondon.com/previews/fabric17/packshot.jpg

dyson (dyson), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

WHAT is THAT

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

That cover rocks.

I've heard Akufen DJ, he was good but there was nothing remarkable about it.

It looks like the tracklisting just about meets Canadian Content regulations!

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

The Fabric packaging is annoying - I usually put the CD in one of those case logic single liners so it doesnt get all scratched by the tin.

This mix (as well as the cover) looks pretty tasty though.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

middle brow?

That sounds a bit elitest. Its not like these are ministry of sound comps.

hector (hector), Monday, 21 June 2004 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha promo copies in Australia come in boring blank card slipcases with no illustrations so that critics can't complain about the design!

It has been getting much better though since they got rid of the awful grey men meme. The Akufen cover is great, and I really like the cover with the gryphon too.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

promo copies come like that everywhere, I assure you.

the cover looks more like one of those em:t records from c. '96 that looked real good in shops but somehow never made me the slightest bit interested in buying/listening to

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

and I am obv. very interested in hearing this one. what no Todd Edwards?! ;-)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The last few Fabric releases have reused graphics from their flyers. A friend grabbed a bunch of flyers on his trip to London last year and I believe he has the one with this image framed on his wall. I think whatever design firm does them was in xlr8r or some other dead tree publication lately.

mike h. (mike h.), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm guessing he's getting tired of Todd Edward comparisons - You have only yourself to blame Matos if Akufen's next album sounds nothing like "My Way".

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

That tracklist is almost exactly what I've heard John Tejada play the last few times I've seen him this year, and Tejada is a smoking hot dj.

tylero (tylero), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I want him to make more gorgeous dream-pop stuff like "Train to Panama", "Little Hop of Horrors" and the first track on My Way - ie. still Edwards-ish (although Akufen's hardly Tuff Jam is he?) but not quite so manic and rigorously "fun".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

not quite so manic and rigorously "fun"

what an excellent way of phrasing why i don't really like akufen as much as i could. i think the insistence on rigorous "deepness" is why i prefer craig richards or tyler stadius to michael mayer.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you mean Craig Richards is rigorously deep or Michael Mayer?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 05:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I've always thought Akufen sense of humour had more to do with pretentious smart arse humour of Mike Patton, Ween or Zappa (ie lots of derivative, but technically proficient musical ability being put to the use of trying prove zany things. Not as overbearing though as I still enjoy listening to Akufen.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 06:18 (twenty-two years ago)

um i mean michael mayer is too rigorously deep.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 06:23 (twenty-two years ago)

though it looks like i've misread your point. AARGH. maybe i have mad cow disease or something

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

x-posto

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

but it doesn't have to be, ambrose, and bodily functions really isn't. it's just a good album, made to be listened to as an album. herbert's remixes are a lot tougher, because they are made for clubs. his albums are made for the home or the headphones, same to a certain extent w/ akufen.
btw, re akufen, can i just say that i'm really really bored hearing akufen continually compared (mainly unflatteringly) to todd edwards, yes, parts of his programming are quite similar (pat yourselves on the back, you are all very clever, but he does admit this debt and always has done so he kinda stole that thunder) and there is easily as much difference as similarity between the two.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah the main difference is Akufen has more than one idea. unlike todd "self parody" edwardzzzzzzzzzz...

martin (martin), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i love todd edwards, btw, but don't see him as being someone who continually, and rather lazily, *has* to be dredged up as soon as akufen is mentioned.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

And the mix he did (of pretty much all his own stuff, as per policy) for the recent Pure Garage 'Four To The Floor' comp is ace

glad to hear this as i've been meaning to pick it up. the last time i went to tower i had it in my hands, but i bought something else instead (they had those depeche mode singles boxsets on sale).

the edwards christian thing is completely overt, but i can't think of music that is more flat-out euphoric.

tricky disco, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

also, not that anyone is disputing this, i think herberts dj-ing is vastly different than akufen's. track selection alone will tell you that.

tricky disco, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

er dave.. "house music to me" = "what i want out of house music", not "house music IS". but yeah its linear quality just doesnt do it for me. i like bodily functions and my way but i just get frustrated by both artists seeming (ie the way it seems to me, not an indisputable fact) to dedicate all their concentration on the sounds they use that flesh out their tracks, rather than the percussive bare bones of the tunes. i'm just not into such (what i regard as) myopic micro-processing at the expense of an overall groove.

re todd edwards. im not that familiar, but it does seem as though he has a 12" out every few weeks, and i find it hard to distinguish between all his prolific output. As a result I decided to buy 'shut the door' (this is the classic, right?) and be done with it.

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

ambrose, i understand that - our opinions differ. there's no problem. i sometimes like to take a less functionalist approach to house music, as this way i get to enjoy a lot of different stuff without thinking "it's not going to go bang-up in a club, ergo it's not what i want". i like different things at different times!!! still this is a more interesting way for this thread to go than the usual format for threads mentioning akufen, so keep it up by all means.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

AKUFEN!!!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

TODD EDWARDS!!!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

ZZZZZZZZZ!!!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

isnt akufen playing at fabric sometime? he played paris coupla weekends ago, maybe hes over for a bit.

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

he's over in the very near future ... can't remember when

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

yo martin you really should be pushing for a target fabric mix

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I must stress here that I don't think ALL of Akufen's stuff is particularly Edwardsy, just My Way and some of the Perlon stuff. Battaglia OTM re: Akufen live--that performance was pretty acidy w/o actually sounding like acid, if that makes any sense. And I can see some Herbert comparison but not as much as other people. Anyway, my sense is that My Way was a phase and that his next record will sound much different, if that show as anything to go by.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i almost always prefer akufen remixing someone else to his own productions

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I need to hear more Akufen remixes of other people, obviously. strongo, what do you recommend?

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

the craig david ("what's your flavor") remix is like dem 2 after snorting a couple pixie sticks, and the massive attack remix ("special cases") is surprisingly subdued. i have a soft spot for the "nag nag nag" remix, but it's pretty gimmicky.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

"i almost always prefer akufen remixing someone else to his own productions
-- strongo hulkington (dubplatestyl...), June 23rd, 2004.

Why you always gotta be the turd in the punchbowl?

Julio down by the schoolyard (Da ve Segal), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"er dave.. "house music to me" = "what i want out of house music", not "house music IS". but yeah its linear quality just doesnt do it for me. i like bodily functions and my way but i just get frustrated by both artists seeming (ie the way it seems to me, not an indisputable fact) to dedicate all their concentration on the sounds they use that flesh out their tracks, rather than the percussive bare bones of the tunes. i'm just not into such (what i regard as) myopic micro-processing at the expense of an overall groove."

but akufen usually does (except for some wankier remix tracks) balance the micro sampling with groove and most of the time he uses funk bass lines.

twelve, Thursday, 24 June 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

haha yeah sorry guy i've never seen here before i will do my best to adjust my tastes accordingly for you

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 24 June 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost, if it matters

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 24 June 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Wise strategy, Wrongo.

Julio down by the schoolyard (Da ve Segal), Thursday, 24 June 2004 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah but isn't it annoying how all the funk basslines on My Way sound identical???

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 24 June 2004 06:29 (twenty-one years ago)

they don't!!!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 24 June 2004 08:09 (twenty-one years ago)

you should also check his stuff as anna kaufen - he's done some wicked, admittedly skippy, but seriously bouncy tracks that work like a dream in club sets, precisely *because* they're so punchy and propulsive - and yeah jess, they do mix fantastically with dem 2 et al.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 24 June 2004 08:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah Anna Kaufen stuff is more club-friendly.

All the basslines on the "Deck The House"-ish tracks on the album sound like they were played on the same bass preset.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 24 June 2004 08:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"nd that his next record will sound much different, if that show as anything to go by."

uh oh if his next record is anythign like the last live show I saw of his, then we are in trouble. granted, that was in a tate lecture room, and we were all sitting down, but it was limpid rubbish, just a lot of wishy washy ambient preset noises, and some dead cheesy water running samples and those silly jungle bird calls last heard on Enigma and every Bukem tune ever. IT was meant to be music for hsi friends unborn child, lets hope he keeps it on a private basis....

and dave yeah i second the anna kaufen idea. that are like the 'club' akufen. well the one 12" i have is decent.

and well, if when you are talking about the 'funk bassline', you mean 'deck the house', then that is the most pussy bassline ever. i remember everyone on ILM raving about it when it came out, but it is totally lame. like, it would be ok, but its so polite. Pump it up man, you released it on 12", you want it played in a club so just tweak the levels or something! i mean, honestly. maybe he shoudl have released it as anna kaufen ,then he would have had license to properly beef it up.

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 24 June 2004 08:43 (twenty-one years ago)

the senor coconut track is embarassing

benito mussolinington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

why do some people just have to be wacky?

benito mussolinington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

that's a hell of a question to ask here!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

you don't have to be crazy to post here--but it helps!!! smile

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually this is a really good cd. It flows nicely. And tiny little 8 inch jack is genius.

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i really like that sr coconut track (well, the sieg uber die sonne mix), but it's really out of place on this disc, especially the placement it's given. akufen is actually a very good dj, but the way the coconut track comes in makes it sound like this mix is in fact digital.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Why this huge persistence on what isn't right on My Way, when the three Psychometry twelves are all brilliant, and the Quebec Whorehouse possibly the greatest microhouse track?!

___ (___), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

otm about that perlon release. also "the unexpected guest" = one of my favorite moments about superlongevity 2

tricky disco, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

but the way the coconut track comes in makes it sound like this mix is in fact digital

i heard he did it in traktor somewhere. in fact i think it was a bit of promo copy for the cd but now i can't find it.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

why do some people just have to be wacky?

This is Akufen for me. Maybe I'll get this mix though, and give him a chance.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

and the Quebec Whorehouse possibly the greatest microhouse track?!

that ep for me defines the whole genre and negates any arguements about akufen tracks not working in clubs. no bassline and yet the whole ep TOTALLY causes it on the dancefloor every time. i'm on my third copy.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

oh i guess i should have mentioned that despite this glaring error, i loved this mix.

benito mussolinington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

when i saw that in the tracklist it was reminiscent of avenue d in that erlend oye dj kicks mix

tricky disco, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, so the "whorehouse" e.p. I have is a double pack with red and yellow graphics all over it, one track to a side, and no labelling apart from different colours on the typefaces. Is that the one you refer to as "Quebec Whorehouse"?

Because yeah, it's the greatest micro track ever.

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

yup, that's the one - the perlon doublepack with 'whorehouse new process' and 'quebec nightclub'.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 30 June 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I luv luv luv "The Unexpected Guest". I think the biggest problem with My Way is that it didn't have more tracks like this or "Quebec Nightclub" on it to balance the zaniness.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
yeah this cd is pretty good! even senor cocount is ok?! mixed in really crummily but hell. i like this better than the michael mayer one

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 16 July 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i hate all you people. i have to wait untill sept to get it here in my little corner of the planet.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 16 July 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...

been listening to this alot recently: herbert > soul capsule mix of freaks > crackhaus is just fucking obscene

creme1, Saturday, 2 June 2007 02:26 (nineteen years ago)

this is what the jesse rose body language should've sounded like

creme1, Saturday, 2 June 2007 02:27 (nineteen years ago)

fourteen years pass...

*removes 08 Senor Coconut - Smoke On The Water*

ah, perfect

missingNO, Friday, 15 October 2021 05:20 (four years ago)

Had completely forgotten about this mix. The tracklist certainly captures a moment in time.
