Taking Sides: "Blonde on Blonde" By Bob Dylan Vs "Smart" By Sleeper

Dylan was not without his talent, this much is clear, but I don't find myself listening to "Blonde on Blonde" much - if ever. It does very little for me. On the other hand, "Smart" by Sleeper is a great debut album with such fab tunes as "Swallow" and, one of my tops, "Alice in Vain".

As such, Wener and her crew win this one without question.

That's not our fault

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I shall consider this and then go...

BLONDE ON BLONDE!!!

seriously, play it again.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"Just like a woman" has way more sympathy and antipathy than "Alice in vain" which does have a lot of both too....

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

"Smart" is utterly unexceptional, really, as are all the Sleeper albums, a few good singles here and there granted. I'd take it over Blonde and Blonde, but that's because I despise Bob Dylan, an opinion not widely held really.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I loaned the album to a friend who didn't much like him either, he gave me it back a week later and said "god, that's good!"

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going for the Sleeper album

Bbbbbbbbbbbut, But Calum, Blonde On Blonde is about Patsy Kensit and Emma Bunton!

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I see no point arguing with someone who chooses to embarass themselves in this way.

___ (___), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, we got at least one person agreeing.

CRW (CRW), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

And, Blonde on Blonde is the winner.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I like both.

Dylan is more important.

the bellefox, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Louise Wener's novel sold much more than Bob's so Sleeper win.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Figure I should plug my Cannes report before one of my stalkers inevitably does. Enjoy.

CRW (CRW), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

start a new thread for that dude. It'll get more attention.

Man, apples are SO much better than oranges!

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Oranges are more important.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 07:28 (twenty-one years ago)

That response is unacceptably citrusist.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

If you put aside what critics and society tell you is good, then you'll find that Smart is a far more tuneful record and you'll probably end up agreeing that Sleeper's place in musical history is sadly undermined.

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

To be honest, you had me up to the words "place in musical history". Bob Dylan had unarguably more impact in musical history.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes I know he did, without comparison. What I mean is that Sleeper have been largely forgotten despite some corking pop tunes. They didn't have an impact on any band or singer though (except maybe the Spice Girls - didn't they want to recruit Louise at one point?)

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

And we agree, and thread ends.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh does it have to?

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember hating Blonde On Blonde. I remember liking Smart, especially Poor Flying Man.

Smart wins.

Ally C (Ally C), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Neither, they're both shite.
