summer teeth

I heard "ashes of american flags" (YHF) on saturday, it was really good!

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd rather hear Kamera (on YHF) than anything on either, but I'd take Summerteeth as a whole over YHF.

YHF

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

(But don't actually listen to me; I've only heard Summerteeth once, a long time ago -- it just didn't do anything for me.)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Depends. Do you like pop? If so, Summer Teeth. What's come since then has spoiled its reputation as a collection of simple, elegant pop songs.

If you're willing to either a) buy into the (low-key) hype around it and love all of it, or b) skip over a few scatter-shot experiments that fall flat on their face to get a goodly number of really nice, lovely drunken would-be-campfire singalongs, go YHF. They're both good.

Summer Teeth is longer and has a better strike rate, though.

Summer Teeth no doubt. I just don't get the urge to listen to YHF at all.

OTM

are 'friends' electricsound? (electricsound), Monday, 21 June 2004 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Summerteeth, but I enjoy both. YHF's just more ballady.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 21 June 2004 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

summerteeth by a fucking mile

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 21 June 2004 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

"Being There" is pretty good too you know!

Paul B (paul_b), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

YHF by a few light years. 'I am trying to break your heart' and 'Radio Cure' alone crush all of Summerteeth

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

summerteeth is the stronger album overall, by YHF is worth picking up for "jesus, etc" alone.

j c (j c), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

summerteeth >>>>>>>>>>> YHF

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

summerteeth = sunny pop album. rambling but consistent.

yhf = drab, more self-conscious, busier arrangements (unsuited to the songs) fail to paper cracks in what was an inferior follow-up, tune-wise. only plus = tweedy's voice takes on a pleasing cracked quality.

not a difficult choice, this.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

summerteeth is only sunny because of the music, lyrically there's not much hinting at bikini's and surfing, methinks.

willem (willem), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm I've never heard YHF but I don't want to if the consensus is that it's even worse than the very dull Summerteeth.

NB this is not partisan alt country hate, I thought Being There was a reasonably ok album and that YHF could be excellent if the reviewers were right in seeing it as a big improvement. Alas, they weren't.

frankiemachine, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I like em both but Summerteeth wins
