Motley Crue's "Kickstart My Heart"

I heard the original "Kickstart My Heart" demo on the new Crue boxed set (part II). In the original, the chorus goes:

"Ooh! Aah! Kickstart my heart ..."

But the album version goes:

"Whoa! Yeah! Kickstart my heart ... "

And you know what? It makes all the difference!

so... which is better?

King Kobra (King Kobra), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

One of my least favorite Crue tunes evah.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 21 June 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, Mary, Mary quite contrary...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 21 June 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Sometimes I say things just to be contrary, but this time I'm telling the truth. In fact, just about all of Dr. Feelgood is trash.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 21 June 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, this song is a TRASH CLASSIC. That said, perhaps you just need the "ooh, ahh" version to realize it as such...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 21 June 2004 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The absolutely trashiest thing about that era -- the antidrug video for "Dr. Feelgood." Pure hilarity.

And remember all -- fifteen years on, Vince looks like this:

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 June 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

He's never looked better.

He and Hagar could be twins...sorta.

Only marginally related, but I always thought Veronica's Closet was good until they ruined it by bringing in Ron Silver.

Vince Neil looks like Jon Lovitz.

Man, Vince Neil sucks.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 21 June 2004 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually he also looks like a blonder Ron Jeremy in that photo.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 21 June 2004 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought he sort of looked like ex-Dodger, ex-Brewer, ex-Twin, ex-Cub player Ron Coomer's seedy, fatter older brother.

I already said Jon Lovitz.

Oops, sorry Latebloomer.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 21 June 2004 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

No problem. He DOES look like Jon Lovitz, though.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 21 June 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Uncannily so.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 21 June 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know about Ron Coomer, I've always thought that Vince Neil looked like former SNL comedian Jon Lovitz.

King Kobra (King Kobra), Monday, 21 June 2004 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Was it "Sticky Sweet" that sounded so much like "I Want You (She's So Heavy)"?

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 21 June 2004 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Vince killed a dude, right? Vehicular manslaughter or something? What was the story with that?

Josh Anomaly (josh_anomaly), Monday, 21 June 2004 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

1983 or something? Anyway, he and a guy from Hanoi Rocks were making a beer run and Vince wrapped his ride around a parked car or something.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 21 June 2004 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Razzle from Hanoi Rocks....and I believe a couple in another car were crippled or paralyzed or something. All of which made this all the more distasteful...

I don't really think it does at all.

King Kobra (King Kobra), Monday, 21 June 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

By coincidence I just watched this video last night. My friend Harlan noted that it was sort of like the Hair Metal version of "Walk Of Life," what with all the extreme sports clips. It's probably my fave Crue song (and I don't have many).

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 21 June 2004 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

x-post

The album version is much better. Keep that in mind next time any of you musicians are choosing between "Ooh! Aah!" and "Whoa! Yeah!"

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 21 June 2004 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Though I'm glad Paula Abdul didn't sing "c-c-c-coldhearted, woah! yeah! yeah!"

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 21 June 2004 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

That song, and the album it comes from, is garbage, I agree with Johnny on that. However, let's not for one second overlook the fact that Too Fast For Love is a fucking masterpiece.

Motley Crue were my favorite band as a pre-teen - I take a lot of pride in having done a Motley Crue fanzine before I knew what a fanzine was - but it all ended with Dr Feelgood. What a pile of crapola.

On a side note, has anyone ever seen the movie Hangin' With the Homeboys starring Mario Joyner and some other folks (maybe John Leguizamo? I forget...)? The movie's theme song is just it's title sung - exactly - to the tune of Dr Feelgood. "hanginwiththe HOMEBOYS!..." It's hilarious.

Michael Monroe's pissed off about that comp title, the Hanoi Rocks box will be called 'Music to Bury Your Toxic-Waste-Riddled Kid To'

this song rocks! (kickstart my heart, that is). I remember when I was 10 and the video was big, telling my older brother -- "this is punk rock!" i did not know what punk rock was.

tylerw, Thursday, 21 April 2011 16:26 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, that was a serious Montrose rip on that opening. Bad Motor Scooter is a much better song too. Montrose ruled.

Thraft of Cleveland (Bill Magill), Thursday, 21 April 2011 16:28 (fifteen years ago)

The album's themes are:

Drugs - "T.N.T. (Terror 'N Tinseltown)", "Dr. Feelgood", and "Kickstart My Heart"
Sex - "Slice of Your Pie", "Rattlesnake Shake", "Sticky Sweet", and "She Goes Down"
Relationships - "Without You", "Same Ol' Situation (S.O.S.)", and "Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)"
"Time for Change" reflects Nikki Sixx's views on the (then) current events in society.

Re-listening to Dr. Feelgood, the full album, for the first time in years. How did I miss until now that Robin Zander and Rick Nielsen had guest vocals on She Goes Down?

"Kickstart my Heart" does a pretty serious lift job on "Hell Raiser" by the Sweet.
