So Solid Crew: C/D. S/D

Maybe I'm late with this, but their album "They Don't Know" is around and snooping around it seems they have put down a lot more tracks than I have realized. Of course, I live in the States where 21 seconds doesn't add up to much. So anyhow, whats good?

New Answers. 21 seconds to flow... 21 seconds to go....

Honda, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Classic - people seem to think that So Solid Crew stand out because they're really dark, but the truth is that there's hundreds of "crews" and "kartels" and what-have-yous who are waiting to break through as well. What distinguishes So Solid Crew is actually that they have a great ear for pop.

Search: haven't got the album, but my favourites in descending order of greatness: "They Don't Know", "Oh No", "21 Seconds", "Woah", "Why", "Dilemma".

Got the album on Saturday (two days early!) and test-drove it round Clapham/Streatham on Saturday afternoon. Sounds pretty good, but didn't really listen to the lyrics (I'm yer fascination-over-meaning type myself). Fairly accurate snapshot of inner Battersea circa Winter 2001.

PS: Burchill in the Guardian on Saturday - hit the nail on the head, or what?

Was good to see them on TOTP this week, but there were only four onstage. Where were the other 17 members (including dog)?

Ben Butler, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

out beating up 15 year old girls, probably.

i love the branding of so solid: the logo, the videos etc.

i like the fact thjat for some reason their success means that theres lots of fucking STRANGE music in the charts. is it me or is it not distinctly un-pop? in the sounds and things i mean. its not even immediately obviously danceable. they just know (good pun eh) how to think up catchy vocal hooks that everyone can sing along too. not only have they put out shit loads of tunes, but the amount of remixes they have put out is probably more than that of their own tunes. eg the recent playgroup remix. beverly knight. loads fo others, including some unexpected remixees (is that word allowable?) who i cant think of at the moment.

i couldnt listen to them all day long but i think they are a well good thing for garage and for the charts too.

Also excellent: their colla-bo with Mis-teeq, "They'll Never Know" - yes, they tend to use the same narratives a lot.

Tim, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Search .. oxide and neutrino .. same production, i like most of there output, theres a funny remix of the bill theme on winmx, complete with sirens ...
SO Solid Crew.. OH NO (whats the word), Dangerous

Destroy, the new misteeq tune, its just a shit r&b thing with there old single tapped on at the end..
Im off to buy a So Solid Mobile phone cover..
Booooo

What's the deal with the name? "So Solid". Is it in danger of liquifying? Why do so many 'urban' acts have names that go beyond reflexive into the tautological or redundant? "So" isn't a very strong qualifier, is it? As for SSC themselves - the new Pistols!

two weeks pass...
RFI, RFI!

So I'm watching TOTP last Friday and now I'm as confused as Ben upthread. They had Oxide and Neutrino on, only there were five rappers and the track sounded nothing like the crap "Bou-bou-bound For Da Reload". In fact it sounded more like ... So Solid

So what exactly is the respective make up of each of So Solid and O&N? Or are they both collectives with variable numbers of members. Sorry to be so slow...

I still don't know what everyone sees in them.

DG, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I HAF FINALLY JUST HEARD 21 SECONDS.

I WUV THE SO SOLID CREW!!!

jess, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what Jess said. One listen in to 'They Don't Know' + I'm well impressed. Didn't pay much attention to the lyrics mind, but I like that dark-bass, minimalist dance-hall stylee garage groove thang. Could be a grower.

stevo, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The album's much better than people seem to think it is.

Notes which won't end up in my review of it:

Lisa Maffia rhymes "Maffia" with "raffia" at one point.

They keep saying "CRIKEY!"

Tom, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Downloading "21 Seconds" now. Expecting SSC to be exactly three times as good as Neneh Cherry and Youssou N'Dour put together.

Sorry.

OleM, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think I'm hearing the wrong "21 Seconds" or something. Nothing going on that I specifically don't like, but I'm just so underwhelmed. Actually, I just listened again and it's a *bit* better than I recall.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anything short of chronic flatulence is a bazillion times better than "7 Seconds". Not to change the subject or anything.

David Raposa, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe you have the non-album version which lacks the racecar zzzzzzzzzooooommmms when the guard changes. Maybe that will make the difference for you.

Honda, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Use of "CRIKEY!" = ultimate proof of English language's strength- through-hybridisation

Robin Carmody, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think I'm going to have to get the album in the January sales, I've been thrown from my earlier HATA position by downloading 'They Don't Know' which I thought was alright (he said enthusiastically).

DG, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"They Don't Know" the single is better than "21 Seconds" I reckon, especially when you factor in the awesome Ms Dynamite-guesting remix.

Jeff - O & N are both members (albeit slightly peripheral ones) of SSC, and the other members of SSC regularly guest on their tracks, so the dividing line is somewhat hard to spot. FWIW, I really disliked "Bound 4 Da Reload" until I heard the non-Casualty version, and realised that it had been a kewl gangsta track only masquerading as a novelty toon all along.

Does MegaMan's Basketball shirt display a tragic misspelling or is it just promotional material for a new comedy super duo, Hale and Mega?
