it makes sense for the reaction to something plasticy and metropolitan, to be rootsy and rural, but, hasnt this been the case for about a year now anyway?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

speaking of gay, the John Moloney line about his "ghetto bones" repeated in the latest Wire's SBHOTM review is one of the most cringe-worthy interview things I can remember.

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

this folk stuff does seem to be getting a lot of press, but personally the only people I know who are listening to it now are people who have *always* listened to it, folks who were telling me about Faun Fables and Pentangle years ago. Maybe this is just some outgrowth/afterbirth to all that twee Nick Drake stuff - eg, more "hardcore", difficult, obscure, etc.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Electroclash + Folk = Power Folking. It's folk style with padded shoulders and 80s synths. Samplers can be used in both.

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

now yr talking

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Aren't The Books Power Folking? I've only heard one song though, so maybe not. That last Matmos album was Power Folking though. (And Illuminations by Buffy St.Marie of course.)

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The Books are Folking PowerBook.

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't see folk going big guns in Spain, somehow...

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, there's this really hot new artist called Beck... a skinny kid who mixes hobo folk songs with drum-machines and Casios. He skats sometimes at Spaceland... crazy! (Bit of a loser, though.)

Momus (Momus), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i hope history does not repeat. beck is possibly the nadir of the 90s, though, possibly, a beck rehash in 04 might work better (for the simple reason that eclectism, while the bane of the 90s, is a jewel in the 00s)

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 08:50 (twenty-one years ago)

How hard is it to just say "No"?

scottontharox (scottkundla), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

moderately hard, because while f isnt the new e, it also could be, in a way, or has the social potential to be

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

My dad to thread. It ain't folk if it's got nasty horrible SQUARE WAVES.

He'll hit you with his pony tail if you try to get a Powerbook near his mixing board.

People love Gravity and Evolution! (kate), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Spaceland wasn't even doin' shows yet when Beck last took the stage w/acoustic & leafblower

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

after never liking beck at all outside of his singles from Odelay I inexplicably downloaded pretty much everything he has ever released.

haven't listened to any of it though.

artdamages (artdamages), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

are autoharps the new old synths? Greenpot/Bluepot uses both and has for years.

What the new folk is, is not the old Avenue "A" anti-folk of 2002. Thank You very much. Adam Green is out, Devendra Banhardt in. We are clearly seeing incredible new "folk" artists from Joana Newsom to Espers to Julia Vorontsova, sub-Fahey pickers to the stand and strum... It's been a great year so far. Actually its been a great EIGHT years....from the WYRD & the WEIRD. I say "bring it on"!

i'd say this thread's existence answers its own question.

that guy need a beating

that's devendra barnhart

yeah, YOUR NAME IS ON THE BAT EMMEFFER & c. dude's like the cliffs notes of folk. stop shaving your chest, start shaving your face. etc.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

venus glow otm...the folk that Beck comes from is closer to the Ave A anti-folk scene. The way I see it, the anti-folk scene was "punk" in the sense that it was a sort of diy songwriter thing. The new folk scene is extremely interested in the history of the genre. The center, I think, is Kevin Barker of Currituck Co., who's best material I got on a CD-r 2 years ago but hasn't been released yet. He's an excellent fingerpicker with a world-class record collection and people like Devendra credit him with turning him on to some of the classics.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

kevin barker's the center? good to know. i'll tell everyone immediately.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

c'mon man, lay off, he wrote "I think." Unless you honestly think speculation is not allowed.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm stating that as a fan. He hasn't gotten any of the hype that many others have but he's done a lot to support many recent folkies, including going on tour with Devendra and Joanna Newsom and Vetiver and filming it. Some of his earlier stuff sounds like the work of an indie-pop'er gone folkie but more recent stuff is much deeper, with very strong Bert Jansch, Fred Neil etc influence. Devendra and I think Ben Chasny have both dropped his name recently, so I expect good and big things from him.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

man, name dropped?! it's in the bag. i'll dust off my copy of the first currituck county lp and 7" and get ready for some bigtime ebay action!

Some of his earlier stuff sounds like the work of an indie-pop'er gone folkie

he played guitar for aden. so there might be a reason for that.

i've seen him live several times, interesting seeing a dude in a vintage foreigner "ironic?" t-shirt do the fahey thing. and wow, dusted.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. That's exactly what I meant. Because people have mentioned him his records will be worth tons of money.

I'm totally sorry, I take all my statements back, I'm sorry I tried to give credit to someone who's been tirelessly promoting a type of music and artists I enjoy, and who's knowledge and taste has touched many of the artists that this thread is about. And yeah, dusted sucks, so does foreigner, ironic t-shirts, irony in general, playing john fahey and generally being a decent person on the internet.

The dusted link is so people can read, if they want, Kevin talking about some records he likes, which I found interesting. Feel free to not click on the link. Also feel free to not read my posts, and definately feel free to not respond to them.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Dan. He's funny.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

You should meet me in person. Totally hilarious.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

el sabor has been hitting the whiskey. anyone sez anything mean about my buddy jack rose i'll hit them over the head with some basho l.p's. don't even try it!

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

jack rose, he's funny. "YYAAARGHHHGGRR, GET OFF MY GUITAR!"

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope some of the new folkers give some money to the tower recordings. i'm all for indie kidz hitting the 12 strings. anything to get them off of brian wilson's flabby phallus.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

there was folk music before 2002?

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

well, Kevin has put on shows with P.G. Six and Samara, and they're getting increased exposure with all the newcomers.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Spaceland wasn't even doin' shows yet when Beck last took the stage w/acoustic & leafblower
-- J0hn Darn1elle (edito...), June 23rd, 2004 4:52 AM. (J0hn Darn1elle)

hmm... we had the "spaceland" club on hetero-sundays at "Dreams Of LA"... I last saw beck with leafblower circa 92 (i think?) opening for the treepeople at raji's. i also saw him on the LA RTD bus (washington in venice) with his ghetto blaster and acoustic guitar.

"loser" was great, he would have made an awesome obscurity/one hit wonder.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i liked the dusted link!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry scott but I think Jack Rose's albums and live set blow, even when compared with other warmed-over Fahey revivalists.

I like your Marah review though.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

ps. Dan Selzer rules haterz are totally gay

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

From the Dusted thing:

it dawned on me that part of the reason why on first listen I often didn't recognize the true beauty of certain folk records was that they, to me at the time, didn't sound enough like Nick Drake

Now put on yr Nick Drake hater hats
