Montreal - when Mutek's not in town...

I'll soon road trip it to Montreal for my fifth annual (very patriotic) 4th of July vacation. Can anyone recommend any hot spots for microhouse (and/or solid electronic music) in addition to my favorite shop (Esoterik) and lounge/bar (Laika)?

nader (nader), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

my living room

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

you should also see what's going on at the SAT

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Does the SAT have a website?

nader (nader), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, i'm not 100% sure what it is but i think it's www.sat.qc.ca

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

It's down at present, but I found this calendar in the meantime. Unfortunately it seems to focus on the jazz fest events, which I'm trying to avoid this go 'round.

nader (nader), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

check www.casadelpopolo.com, you might find something to your liking playing at the casa, sala, or el salon. also the spanish restaurant in the sala is aces & pretty cheap!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

and yeah fuck the jazz fest! ugh

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd recommend Slutsky's living room too.

Guymauve (Guymauve), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

hi g!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i miss montréal. such a fantastic place.

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Agreed -- Esoterik is probably the best music shop in Montreal, although Cheap Thrills is close.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Haven't been in awhile, but Blizzarts (3956A St-Laurent) used to focus on electronic music. They started playing other genres, but it's still electronic-friendly.

alex in montreal, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Casa del Popolo looks solid! Thank you - (Can't wait 'til they update July's calendar.)

I love finding new joints like this (my wife and I found Laika wholly by accident, but knew we were in good hands once we heard its beats).

nader (nader), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Piknic Electronik every Sunday afternoon at/on Parc Jean Drapeau

Bily Kun (bar) tends to be playing minimal techno, but is way too full of Monsieur Black Turtleneck Square Glasses for me. They do sell real absinthe at the bar though.

The Mutek people opened a record store called Hub, next door to Laika. Esoterik and Cheap Thrills are still the ill spots though. I also love Sound Central but I don't think it's what you're after.

superultramega (superultramarinated), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

...and the jazz fest is overall weak, but manitoba and jaga jazzist are both playing. Probably after you're here though.

superultramega (superultramarinated), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'm missing both Manitoba and Jaga Jazzist and checking out Mocean Worker or Rainer Truby's are big MAYBE's.

In typical Murphy's irony it's the 25th anniversary edition of the jazz fest and the weakest line-up (for my interests) in the five years I've gone (last year at least had Cinematic Orchestra and Gotan Project - the latter of which blew the former off the stage - yet another suprise).

I was really, really hoping Herbert's Big Band would swing by, not no luck (guess two trips to MTL was too much to ask...).

What's this Piknic Electronik of which you speak? If the weather cooperates I'd be down for another visit to said Parc.

nader (nader), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

BTW: Thanks to superultramega, alex in montreal, and Slutsky for the tips thus far.

My wife and I needed new spots to explore and now we've got plenty to fill our nights. Very cool, indeed.

Although I'm still waiting on Slutsky's street address. I hear his living room's dOpe.

nader (nader), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

There is a cat there, apparently.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

BTW, the SAT site seems to be back up, but no sign of a July schedule yet.

alex in montreal, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

you're welcome.
Also just remembered that there's some Congo Natty party here on the 2nd of july, hasn't really been promoted though.

Sat's website is notoriously garbled.

superultramega (superultramarinated), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Huh, looks like it's closing for the summer.

alex in montreal, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

superultramega, what sort of details can you provide me for Congo Natty and/or Piknic Electronik?

nader (nader), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I suspect these are weekly events at Blizzarts

SUN: Chill Sundays w/DJ Chris D and guest, 10pm, free
MON: Slow w/DJs Future Lad, Yrdm, 10pm

Either any good?

nader (nader), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck Montreal. one of my closest friends is moving there this weekend for med school

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

esoterik is definitely a good place to check out, they are super-super-nice there.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

slow mondays can be fun

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

when are you going to be here?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I hear the girls are very attractive there.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be in town Friday, July 2 through Monday, July 5. And what you've heard about the girls is very, very true.

nader (nader), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

hell yeah

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

it's too bad, i'll probably be away that weekend for a friend's wedding!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I just may be in Mtl around that time as well.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

And just when I was on the verge of windmills in the middle of Slutsky's apartment...

nader (nader), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Zac and I are there on Election Day. Anything worth checking out that night?

Kim (Kim), Thursday, 24 June 2004 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

If you're here the night before election day, don't miss the Arcade Fire!!

Elliot (Elliot), Thursday, 24 June 2004 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

(a superfantastic band, playing at el salon which is on st laurent corner marie anne)

Elliot (Elliot), Thursday, 24 June 2004 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Nope, just the 28th, but thanks! Hopefully someone else can make use of the info.

Kim (Kim), Thursday, 24 June 2004 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Do I know someone in the Arcade Fire? Is that Myles B's band?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 24 June 2004 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh wait, no, that's Les Angles Morts. Never mind.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 24 June 2004 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Suxxor: It appears Thursdays is the weekly date for Maus at Laïka, Tuesdays, Mike Shannon - so unfair! (As I'll arrive Friday and leave Tuesday morning.)

nader (nader), Thursday, 24 June 2004 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I think myles b used to be in the arcade fire, but I'm not sure.

Elliot (Elliot), Thursday, 24 June 2004 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

st-jean st fair is cancelled this year :(

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 24 June 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

In addition to fun in-town, can you guys suggest a hiking/chilling destination say an hour's drive or so from MTL? I've hiked Mont Royal a few times now and am looking for some rural, Canadian serenity.

nader (nader), Thursday, 24 June 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Drive an hour North from montreal and you're in the Laurentians, which is what you're looking for I imagine. Mont Tremblant provincial park has lots of hiking, rivers, rocks, trees, all that stuff.

No street fair ....... lame. I think there's a meager substitute happening at the Mile End cultural centre or whatever they've called that space upstairs from the green room.

superultramega (superultramarinated), Thursday, 24 June 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to go to Mtl!!!

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 June 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

S my man, I just read that, courtesy the CEEB. Shame really. Always a good time. How much has Montreal changed in a year I'm wondering.

Guymauve (Guymauve), Thursday, 24 June 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Laurentians and more: Parks Québec

nader (nader), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

it's hard to track how much it's changed; apparently the event was cancelled this year because the organizers felt it was getting out of hand, attracting too many rowdy out-of-neighbourhooders etc. STILL LAME!! i'm djing a party tonight tho, it's gonna be STREET LAW!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 24 June 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

sucks about the street festival. which party are you djing at? the one in the church basement?

Elliot (Elliot), Thursday, 24 June 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

no a splinter one at esperanza (which is over now. some guy took off his clothes and ran into the night, that was my cue to leave)

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 25 June 2004 06:06 (twenty-one years ago)

tuesdays, there's a great house-music and minimal tech night at le salon daome (on mont royal est, not sure the number) with mutek's vince lemieux and dominique, aka mightykat. really nice scene.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Friday, 25 June 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah my friend simon plays there sometimes too! i've never yet been tho

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 25 June 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

It all sounds so exciting, like I get to discover some new hangouts when I get back there. Looking forward to it all (sorry I'm missing the Fantasia Fest, though). What's on for August there?

Guymauve (Guymauve), Friday, 25 June 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not sure about august--it is sort of a slower month as you may recall--but i'll keep my ears open!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 25 June 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

cafe esperanza is great

alex in montreal, Friday, 25 June 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

June 28th: Transistors et Autres Circuits III: Thomas Köner, Vroomb, Æ Lab, Nathan McNinch @ Goethe Institute (418 Sherbrooke East)

alex in montreal, Friday, 25 June 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 25 June 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm thinking of coming the weekend of the 3rd/4th.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 25 June 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

John Cale on the 5th

alex in montreal, Friday, 25 June 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Le Salon Daome it is (in addition to so much else, e.g. Tiga at Piknic Electronik) - I just extended my MTL vacation by a night: nice one!

nader (nader), Monday, 28 June 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I so heart MTL. If it weren't for Quebec/Canada's very European approach to legal education I'd soooo prefer to study there than stateside.

nader (nader), Monday, 28 June 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

T. Weiss (Timmy), Sunday, 19 March 2006 03:37 (twenty years ago)

here is a good blog that higlights the more electro-hous going ons, but also touches minimal: http://mirrorballs.blogspot.com/

SteveB23, Sunday, 19 March 2006 22:36 (twenty years ago)

glimmers on thursday at the SAT

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 19 March 2006 22:48 (twenty years ago)

ya the glimmers party is being thrown by iloveneon, which means you should go... always outrageous events.

Daniel Gelfer (gelfball), Monday, 20 March 2006 12:07 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

So what the hell happens with respect to Piknik when it rains? While I've been to one in the rain, that was for Mutek. Surely they must have some sort of back up or still go through with it. I pity the artists that come here only to get rained out like that.
