Solo projects that sucked - reality check

Seen it hundreds of times. The ego-maniac lead singer of a band goes solo and proves that it was the band that had the talent.

Cases in point: *Peter Murphy (Should the World Fail to Fall Apart was OK - & Even Love Hysteria had moments. Steadily downhill from there. And don't even mention Dali's Car.) *Morrissey *Mick Jagger *Roger Daltry

Digest. Discuss.

... and I heard that Tim Booth just left James. Can't wait for that one.

Bloody Phil Collins. Not that post-Peter Gabriel Genesis was so great. But "A Trick of the Tail" and "Wind and Wuthering" were so much better than anything Mr Collins released under his name.

Roger Waters "The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking" and "Radio KAOS"; I can only tolerate TP&CoH because of the sleazily compelling album cover.

While his albums haven;t been al that awesome, morrissey has released a lot of good singles as a solo act imho

Debbie Harry (but flourished in some movie-roles), Midge Ure, that drummer from Queen (Taylor?), he released a single which you could not remember even if you heard it 1000 times, don't know about Freddie Mercury though, it's not my cup of tea...Sting, Mick Jagger, Boy George, the list must be endless, is the solo-stuff Billy Mckenzie brought out after The Associates any good? haven't heard it...and the other part of Dali's Car: Japan's Mick karn?

The girls from ABBA... and on and on and on and on...

Stephen Malkmus' record ain't half as good as The Preston School Of Industry's. Puts a whole new perspective on what we thought of Pavement, doesn't it?

Alacrán, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Steve Malkmus is a cockfarmer.

David Lee Roth is the first one that comes to my mind. Dreadful.

I thought Peter Murphy's DEEP had a few decent tracks ("Deep Ocean Vast Sea" and "Cuts You Up," notably).

i'd say morrissey's first five records minus kill uncle were nearly as good as the smiths so that is a bad example. your arsenal may be my favourite morrissey/smiths record ever. bauhaus were crap so saying peter murphy is crap too is no big surprise, still he was not nearly as dreadful as tones on tail and love and rockets and their affiliated solo gigs were.

Well, he's not that bad, but Frank Black solo does not even begin to touch The Pixies. How does everyone feel about Bob Mould post-Husker Du?

Richard Ashcroft's solo record SuXoRed, but that was inevitable.

Seeing my list now, it's rather gay ;-)

There will never be consensus about Morrissey on ILM probably, I for myself stick to his Hulmerist video-compilation, which is great (and hilarious, sort of Carry On version of The Smiths, like a travesty of his older self, or a parody...well, maybe the same could be said about the songs, don't know)

Sporty Spice. David Lee Roth. Lou Reed (at least his 1st solo effort)

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Solo Spice, all 5 of them. All boyband solo-efforts (except Robbie). This is too simple to finish them off.

erik, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Uh. Sporty's was excellent. Ricky Martin = ex-boyband. NKTB Solo = none of them had the talent to begin with.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

did tom veraline ever get it together after television?

jk, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, "Dreamtime" is ace.

Personal to Erik: stay gay :-)

Sean, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Isn't alex chilton's career a lark on the entire notion of going solo?

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Chris Cornell's album "Euphoria Morning" was pretty much a steaming pile of crap. Then there is.......Sting.
