Where did they come from? What do they want? What's the difference between a blog and a bastardized diary? These blogs have suddenly spawned like mushrooms from hell. I usually know what's going on but I have to admit I have no clue what their purpose is. Seems like a excuse for not having an idea for your website. Fill me in as Craig David would have said.

They come from the Misty Mountain, where the spirits play. Duh.

...and the tangerine...*RABBITS*...

I've seen weblogs of one form or another since I've seen the web. I recall the legendary Mirsky target LoserNet, an amazing cataloging of obsession with an idiotic upstairs neighbor. They've just gotten a lot more popular thanks to Handy Software Things.

Well, in all honesty, mine "came from" me being a self-obsessed tosspot douchebag, but I think a lot of people think theirs comes from a need to be "creative" and tell the world all about your inner thoughts. So, basically, the purpose is that of a bastardized diary, as you put it in comparison format. Unfortunately, as with diaries, 99% of them are hideously uninteresting.

i think there's one easy answer to where they come from:

not being popular in school.

i write a blog so that everyone can see how very very fascinating my life and i are. it hasn't worked though.

Nah, Brent, that's only where the shitty a-list blogs come from.

I really don't get this blog stuff. It sounds like far too much fuss for a tool that allows you to post diary entries to the web. Or am I missing something?

fourteen years pass...

If you started a blog and wrote daily but didn't push it on Twitter/Facebook or buy ads, would it ever even get picked up by search results today?

I mean, sure, I follow some blogs like that and they’re easily searchable.
