well apparently he died, david rush told me he did...i can't find anything like a obit or whatever anywhere on the www.

but yeah - well that's sad, he was great. but on the lite side, hey @ least we won't get any more crappy reunion alb's from them. i mean Rite Time stunked pretty much didnt it?

& yeah what about "Sacrilege", did anyone like that one? i didn't... did i kind of miss the pt. of it or s.th.? 'cause it came with all the endorsement of the old Can guys & had quotes on the cov about, Oh this is in the spirit of how we used to do back then, this is sort of what we'd be into if we started out now, or something, but to me it seemed dull & pointless & a exercise in turning radical music into standard modern genre exercises.

shit sorry, the guy just died & i've got NUTHIN GOOD to say, this is no good. i mean i'm a fan, a big time fan, really, yeah so let's remember the guy for the cool stuff he did. OK. but yeah did he do anything good since Czukay's "Movies" & "Peak of Normal" albs? & yeah is he actually dead? David where'd you get that from?

A friend saw Karoli w/Jaki L's band abt a year ago and he said MK was in a v. v. bad way even then (he liked a drink, I think) although his playing was still gd apparently.

I prefer 'Rite Time' to some of the albs just before it, but yeah, not so great. But then I'm the kind of trad Can fan who doesn't really like much after 'Future Days'. And 'Sacrilege' seemed dated even at the time (although I seem to remember it had a gd 'pop' mix of 'Yoo Doo Right' - not as gd as Masaki Batoh's versh, but you can't have everything.)

I will remember MK for the guitar playing on 'Mother Sky'.

really very sad. theres an obituary on pitchfork.

yeah "Mother Sky" 's his classic. Definitely. That was the 1st one that came to my mind too when I thought "What was so great about Michael Karoli?"

Yeah, I was very sad to hear about it, too, and seeing as my memory isn't tainted by those reunion albums (having never heard them), I can't even fault him for those.

I actually dedicated my radio show last night to him, and played all old Can stuff with my spare playing time. Some of it I hadn't listened to in a few months, but damn did it sound fantastic.

Just listened to "Chain Reaction" and "Quantum Physics" last night after I heard the news. I always considered those tunes to be the apex of Can's 70s stuff, and last night Karoli's contributions seemed even more essential. Just the way his guitar seemed to dance around the layers and layers of percussion and synthesizer stuff -- I really think he was the "human" part of the band. He'll definitely be missed.

really very sad. theres an obituary on pitchfork.

Just don't go by the birthdate, because I wrote it wrong. I am terribly embarrassed about it, and have emailed Ryan S. to change it ASAP. Sorry, Michael.

That ONE NOTE in "Oh Yeah"!

dave q, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh I forgot that note. That one that sounds like a broken guitar going pyooonng.Pictures I'd seen of him over the last few years had him looking cancer-stricken,but I've never read any actual announcement of what he was suffering from, and by Czukay's account he was playing guitar when he died.

i was very very sad to hear of Karoli's passing...this is really turning out to be a crap year....

Joey Ramone dies.... the WTC is destroyed.... more than 6 jumbo jets go down in less than 3 months.... anthrax spreads.... and now one of the greats dies....

bless you Michael for giving us so much great music.

two years pass...
When I first heard the track 'future days' it was in 2001 and I was overlooking the French alps. That's still the image I keep behind the eyes when I hear it now. When Karoli's guitar work shimmered it simply tied me down - I was and still am overpowered by it. Now all I can hope for is to develop and become my own gutarist, but such total originality will be damn difficult to attain - thanks Karoli.x
